NV Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor Requirements Licensed/Certified Counselors
Nevada Administrative Code 641C (NAC 641C.300) requires that all licensed or certified alcohol and drug counselors earn 40 hours of continuing education hours during a two-year period of licensure or certification, of which three hours must pertain to ethics and three hours must pertain to confidentiality and HIPAA.
Clinical Supervisors
Licensed counselors who supervise certified interns must attend at least ten hours of continuing education in counseling supervision, ethics, and Nevada law during the two-year certification period. These hours may be included in the required 40 hours of continuing education.
Interns
Registered counselor interns are required to earn 15 hours of training within the first six months of their internship employment, 10 hours during the second six months, and 20 hours in each subsequent year. During the first three months, six hours of continuing educations credits must pertain to ethics and six hours must pertain to confidentiality and HIPAA.
Social Work CEHs
Pursuant to NAC 641B.189(2) revised February 11, 2009 and the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Workers, a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) may take up to 15 hours of continuing education credits and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) may take up to 18 hours of continuing education credits via distance learning/remote study courses, home study and/or self directed learning programs during a two-year period.
Record Keeping
Participants in need of contact hours for alcohol and drug counseling licensure, certification, or internship, must have proof of attendance (Certificate of Completion) for possible audit by the Nevada Board of Examiners for Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Counselor’s office.

NV Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor Requirements
Prevention Specialist Credentialing The state of Nevada does not have an established International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) Member Board which recognizes the Prevention Specialist Certification. Those interested in receiving this certification are advised to visit a neighboring state that has an approved IC&RC Member Board to apply for certification in that state. For example, the California Certification Board of Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors recognizes the Prevention Specialist Certification and offers the examination to receive such designation. In order to become a Prevention Specialist, the IC&RC has established the following minimum standards, however each member board may have additional requirements that must be met in order to qualify for thePrevention Specialist Certification:
Experience
2000 hours of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention work experience.
Education
100 hours of prevention specific education. Fifty hours of this education must be ATOD specific. Six hours must be specific to prevention ethics.
Supervision
120 hours specific to the domains with a minimum of ten hours in each domain.
Examination
Applicants must pass the IC&RC International Written Prevention Specialist Examination.
Code of Ethics
Applicants must sign a prevention specific code of ethics statement or affirmation statement.
Recertification
40 hours of continuing education earned every two years. If the above standards are met, along with the individual IC&RC member board requirements, one must apply to take the Prevention Specialist examination. The Prevention Specialist examination will include questions pertaining to the following domains, which were identified as a Prevention Specialist’s areas of expertise:

The daylong training presents a review of treatment strategies in drug involved offenders. We will cover the typology of drug offenders and the differences between sub-groups of drug offenders based on their risk and needs levels. We’ll also review principles of treatment interventions that have empirical support of effectiveness in this population, and some specific elements of effective treatment in both custody and community settings. We will pay particular attention to the issues of motivational enhancement in the context of cognitive behavioral interventions, as well as pragmatic steps in successful implementation of these strategies. Current reseach shows the efficacy of telehealth services. However, the addiction treatment profession lags behind its behavioral health colleagues. This workshop will expose counselors to telehealth counseling serivices; web-based treatment support options; ethical/scope of practice issues; client engagement concerns; and reimbursement. Drug Endangered Drug Endangered Children are children identified to be at risk of abuse or neglect as a result of drug manufacturing, Children trafficking, use and abuse. Drug Endangered Children (DEC) programs evolved within the disciplines of public Oct. 28 Reno Child Protective Service and Law Enforcement in order to Oct. 29 Las Vegas address the needs of children and families found in these environments. Suicide is a leading cause of death among people who abuse alcohol and drugs (Wilcox, Conner, & Caine, 2004). This training will consider: basic strategies in addressing suicidal thoughts and behaviors, techniques for assessing suicidal ideation and considerations for best practices in responding to these unique situations. The training will provide hands on opportunities to consider how you can apply this information in your clinical practice. Parking passes are issued for all workshops scheduled at UNR main campus only. Parking passes are mailed to registrants 4 days prior to the scheduled workshop. If a registration is received less than 10 days prior to the scheduled workshop, parking passes will be made available for pick-up at the registration desk the day of the workshop. Please allow enough time to go back to your car with the parking pass before the start of the workshop. No parking pass needed for UNR, Redfield Campus

Scholarships Scholarships
Application Process
A limited number of full or partial fee-only scholarships are available for each class. Scholarships are primarily for persons with extremely limited resources. Scholarship applications must be made 30 days in advance of the workshop to be considered. Applicants can only receive a scholarship for one class per catalog. To apply, send the following information with your workshop registration: 1. A list of training scholarships received in the past year. 2. The reasons why you need the scholarship assistance. Scholarship awardees will be notified two weeks before the class.
