Bulletproof Kid
Jenn Wilke
Research
The world we live in has become a dangerous one. From violence towards random bystanders to targeted attacks, one never knows what could happen to themselves or their loved ones.
As a result, society
desires protection and stability. We want to go about our daily lives; not living in fear, but the comfort of safety (mainly through technology).
There is a need for balance between a life of technology and the desire to experience the world in a physical sense.
Children’s stimulation is becoming more stagnant due to technology absorption and fear of exploration. 72% of today’s parents preferred playing outside as kids themselves while only 40% of kids would swap time in front of a TV or computer to play outdoors. Studies show kids who spend a decent amount of time outdoors have better attention span than kids with TV and video games.
The desire to protect kids not only emotionally and mentally but also physically is a reaction to a broken world around us.
A study at the Mayo Clinic reveals that ž of parents have a fear of their child being abducted and for 1/3 of parents, this is a constant worry. Every 40 seconds a child becomes missing or is abducted in the US, although most of these reported missing children have run away or it was a misunderstanding.
In 2013 there were 29 school shootings and within the first two weeks of 2014 there were 14
school shootings. The recent Newtown, CT shooting where Adam Lansing shot 20 school children has been investigated to reveal Adam didn’t go out to play much and was a huge gamer.
Focus is turning towards kids’ safety. More parents are deciding to home school their children now, more than ever. Fathers are buying $20,000 bulletproof suits, so they can be safe and continue to be around to support their family. There are child abuse billboards that contain a secret message only visible at a child’s eye level. Dominic Wilcox designed shoes that give directions using a GPS locator. The ‘Watch Over Me App’ alerts emergency contact if person doesn’t reach their destination at specified time. It has a ‘panic button’ and time stamps events and locations. Miguel Caballero is the designer of bulletproof clothing and the MC Kids’ bulletproof backpacks.
A bullet’s projectile is always a gamble. It can puncture vital organs as well as shatter bones and tear tissue.
The focus is to keep bullets away from vital organs and nerve bundles. For
example: the heart, lungs, spine, rib, and main arteries.
Even three year olds are strong enough to fire a gun. Ballistic protection dissapates the high energy of the fragment and transfers the energy over the crossover points of yarns.
Schools and police are implementing a new lockdown procedure called A.L.I.C.E., which stands for:
Alert. Lockdown. Inform. Counter. Evacuate. Prepare to go on the offensive and make distractions for the intruder. If able to evacuate, children meet up at rally points such as the firehouse, police station, or the kid’s home. Prepares and equips for life and death encounters.
Moving forward, society will embrace technology to give security and stability to their life so they know that their loved ones are safe and are able to experience the fullest life.
No price can be set for lives of loved little ones. As an organization, Proof will ensure a sense of peace and security to parents and promote them to encourage exploration for their children, which ultimately will stimulate and grow children into brilliant and curious minds.
The solution is two fold: Both an accessory, to assist in the rescue of an abducted child, and a vest, which prevents fatal gun wounds to kids. The accessory will have a GPS tracking feature, response/ trigger function, and pedophile alert system feature. The vest will have bulletproof fabrications in specific fatal areas that could eventually incorporate reflective or LED features. Kids will be drawn to the collection by the fun details and playful prints.
The Opportunity: To create functional, wearable collection which gives
protection to children. Allowing them to live a safe, carefree lifestyle while still enjoying freedom to express themselves. With the intention of kids not being able to stay still, the collection will have performance
and
endurance capabilities, as
well as protective details and fabrications giving children a more tangible appreciation of the
world around while ensuring
peace and assurance to
parents.
