About the Pattern Suomu(t) [Fin] - Scale(s) [Eng] Opal Rainforest yarns are inspired by the endangered animals of the rainforests. The colorway of the yarn I used in the design is called “Ramona riecht den Nervenkitzel," Ramona smells the thrill. The label has a picture of a gorgeous blue snake and the yarn mimics the colors of the beautiful serpent. To make Ramona the snake even more thrilled, I designed socks that match her scales.

Sizes

Please note that the shoe size is estimated. Choose which size to make according to the foot circumference.

Socks stretch and come loose after blocking and the first time they are worn. Unblocked work should feel a bit tight so that the sock will still fit nicely on the foot after you have finished blocking your work. If you wish to make the socks looser, go up a size.

Pattern Before you CO, verify the foot circumference. Read the pattern once through and circle the size you wish to make. CUFF: CO 54 (60, 60, 66, 72, 78) sts and divide between 4 needles. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist CO edge. Rnd 1: K to eor. Rnd 2: P to eor. Rnd 3: K to eor. Rnd 4: *K2tog, yo* to eor. Rep Rnds 1-3. LEG: Continue working the leg following the Chart on Page 5. The st pattern reps 9 (10, 10, 11, 12, 13) x per rnd. Work Chart Rnds 1-8 until the work measures approx. 15 cm / 6”. Work one rnd in stockinette and at the same time decrease 6 (8, 4, 6, 4, 6) sts evenly on the rnd. The work now has 48 (52, 56, 60, 68, 72) sts total. Work one more rnd in stockinette and divide the sts evenly between 4 needles: 12 (13, 14, 15, 17, 18) sts per needle. HEEL FLAP: The heel flap will be worked back and forth over sts from Needles 4 & 1. Start by working the sts onto one needle: K the sts from Needle 1 onto Needle 4 = 24 (26, 28, 30, 34, 36) sts on needle. Continue by working the reinforced heel for 26 (28, 30, 32, 36, 38) rows in total: WS: Sl1, p to eon. RS: *Sl1, k1* to eon. HEEL TURN: WS: Sl1, p14 (15, 17, 18, 21, 22), p2tog. RS: Sl1, k6 (6, 8, 8, 10, 10), k2tog. WS: Sl1, p6 (6, 8, 8, 10, 10), p2tog. Continue working the decreases by repeating the last two rows until there are 8 (8, 10, 10, 12, 12) sts left on the needle, ending with a RS row.

The yarn is now on the left edge of the heel flap. Divide sts: One half on Needle 4 and the rest on Needle 1 = 4 (4, 5, 5, 6, 6) sts per needle. Using Needle 1, pick up and k 1 st in each of the sl sts [13 (14, 15, 16, 18, 19)] along the left edge of the heel flap + 1 st between the heel flap and the top of the foot. Needle 1 now has a total of 18 (19, 21, 22, 25, 26) sts. Work in stockinette across the top of the foot [Needles 2 & 3]. Using Needle 4, pick up 1 st in each sl st [13 (14, 15, 16, 18, 19)] along the right edge of the heel flap + 1 st between the heel flap and top of the foot. K all the 18 (19, 21, 22, 25, 26) sts on Needle 4. The yarn is now in the middle of the heel flap, between Needles 4 & 1. The work has 60 (64, 70, 74, 84, 88) sts total. SHAPE GUSSET: Continue working in stockinette and at the same time start shaping the gusset: Work k2tog at the end of Needle 1 and ssk at the beginning of Needle 4. Rep decreases every other rnd until Needles 1 & 4 have 12 (13, 14, 15, 17, 18) sts each. The work now has a total of 48 (52, 56, 60, 68, 72) sts. FOOT: After gusset shaping, continue working in stockinette until the work covers the smallest toe OR approx. 2 (2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5) cm or 0.75 (1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 1.75)” shorter than your desired finished length. TOE SHAPING: Continue working in stockinette and at the same time start working decreases: Needles 1 & 3: K until 3 sts remain on needle, k2tog, k1. Needles 2 & 4: K1, ssk, k to eon. Rep decreases on every other rnd until the work has 40 sts total [10 sts per needle].
