Welcome
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Happy Fall! It’s been a fun and exciting year so far for Willamalane and our community— and our year of celebration is still going strong! We have thoroughly enjoyed celebrating our 75th anniversary with you, and the best is yet to come. I love the photo that won Willamalane Park Foundation’s “Autumn at Willamalane” photo contest. Cristal Flores did an incredible job capturing the joy and connection that we hope to create at our parks and events. It’s happy moments like these that drive our team toward our mission: “To deliver exceptional parks and recreation to enrich the lives of everyone we serve.” Speaking of photos, this edition of the Park & Recreation Guide features incredible vintage photos of events and programs from years gone by. We’re also featuring a story on the 40th anniversary of the Adult Activity Center and — drum roll, please — details on the biggest event Willamalane has ever produced, our 75th Anniversary Community Celebration! Willamalane Park will be the site of this amazing event 75 years in the making on Sept. 29 from noon to 6 p.m. Our team has worked hard over the past year to create an amazing celebration to thank you, our community, for supporting the work we do as your park and recreation district. Admission to the event, as well as the carnival rides, games, and activities, are completely FREE of charge. There are special giveaways and other surprises you and your family will not want to miss. You will have the opportunity to be part of a community mural celebrating Springfield and Willamalane. Mark your calendars now! Learn more about the celebration on page 6. More good news: One of my favorite annual events, Haunted Hayride, is scheduled for Oct. 23–26. Due to the popularity of this event, I am very happy to announce we are adding an additional night as well as extended nightly hours. In November, gear up for our favorite Thanksgiving tradition, the Turkey Stuffer 5K! This will certainly be a historic season for Willamalane. Thank you for allowing us to enrich your lives, and here’s to the next 75 years! Be Well,
Willamalane’s board is composed of five members elected to serve four-year terms. Public board meetings are usually held on the second Wednesday of the month, 6:30 p.m. at Bob Keefer Center for Sports and Recreation. Meeting agendas are available the Friday before each meeting at willamalane.org.

WELCOME ON THE COVER
Our fall cover features the winner of the Willamalane Park Foundation photo contest, “Autumn at Willamalane.” The winners of each category are listed below. Thanks to all who entered!
“DADDY & ME” BY CRISTAL FLORES First Place in the Dorris Ranch category and Best in Show We love the pure joy and loving spirit that comes from the connection in this photo. The gorgeous warm hues and soft light depict Dorris Ranch as it was meant to be seen: as a working filbert orchard, but also as a place to grow, learn, and play together. We commend Cristal Flores for her beautiful work and are proud to award her the top prize of the photo contest. Find more of her work on Facebook at Cristal Gayle Photography, LLC. Runners-up: “Tractor” by Cristal Flores and “Hazelnuts” by Rafael Montes. “SOOTHING” BY GEORGE CARDENAS First Place in the Nature, Flora, and Fauna category This serene image of two boaters instantly puts the mind at ease. We particularly enjoyed the way the image is framed by the tree leaves. Runners-up: “Ruff Park Flowers” by Camille Hicks and “Bob Artz Foliage” by Dave Snare.
“FALL FUN” BY SCOTT CHASE First Place in the Sports and Activities category We can all relate to the thrill of scooping up a big handful of fall leaves and tossing them everywhere! This girl, her expression, and her emotion are timeless and precious. Runners-up: “Fall Swings” by Rafael Montes and “Jasper Meadows Park” by Camille Hicks.
YOU CAN SEE ALL THE WINNING PHOTOS ON OUR WEBSITE AT willamalane.org/photocontest.

ur incredible parks team maintains 21 different playgrounds in our district. While we’re beyond proud to offer so many awesome playgrounds, it creates a big question: What’s the best Willamalane playground? To answer this question, we went to an expert for a first-hand account. We’re proud to introduce Olive, our 10-year-old guest writer and reviewer. After much intensive, hands (and feet)-on research, here are Olive’s top five Willamalane playgrounds, along with a couple honorable mentions.

Adult Activity Center Celebrates 40 Years
F
rom its inception in 1944, Willamalane has had strong participation and support among those 55 years and older. Programs like square dancing, coin collecting, a kitchen band, and even Green Thumb park beautification were offered, but what senior community members really wanted was a place of their own.
Enos Beat and Daisy Barker, just after cutting the ribbon for the new Willamalane Senior Activity Center.
BY JEN MARSH
The Senior Citizens Advisory Council was formed in 1972, prompting the expansion of senior program offerings. These classes and events became immensely popular, raising the question: “Can we give these programs and people a facility of their own?” In 1977, that dream became a reality with the passage of a $1.3 million dollar bond to purchase land and begin construction of a recreation center specifically designed and programed for senior adults. Built on the edge of Island Park on the corner of C Street and Water Street, the Willamalane Senior Center was billed as the “biggest in the Northwest” (Eugene Register-Guard, 6/27/77). Upon completion, it would include: • Game rooms for shuffleboard, billiards, and cards • A 300-person auditorium with a stage for performances • Kitchen • Rooms for crafts and other programs • Plenty of space for non-programmed recreation time Patrons got a sneak peek of the facility during a soft opening two weeks ahead of the ribbon cutting. The ribbon was cut during the grand opening on Thursday, Nov. 15, 1979 at 9:30 a.m. Guests of honor and official ribbon cutters included Daisy Barker and Enos Beat, two of the oldest seniors at the center and charter members of the Golden Age Club. Later that evening, a dedication dinner and dance was held for all to celebrate. Headed by Director Sandy Karsten, the 21,000 square-foot center was everything those involved in the planning had hoped for. Along with game rooms, a kitchen, classrooms, and an auditorium, the center had a rock shop where one could try their hand at lapidary and a wood shop. Users of the rock shop and wood shop could sell their creations at the center’s Take a Peek Boutique, which was marketed as an outlet for Springfield craft makers 55 and older to offer their handmade items. The center was also home to several non-Willamalane social service agencies and groups dedicated to senior well-being. This year the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, as it is now known, celebrates its 40th year of service to the senior population of Springfield. Patrons can still sell their wares at the gift shop, or work in the rock shop, and they may also choose to learn how to make cheese in an Urban Homesteading class, take a tai chi class, or hop a bus to the beach for a day of sightseeing and seafood eating. We hope you’ll join us!

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:
Anne Conner
WITH AN EDUCATION in recreation, a career in senior services, and 30 years of involvement with Adult Activity Center under her belt, Anne Conner is the ideal member of Willamalane Adult Activity Center’s Advisory Council. Her work, and the work of her council mates, helps greatly to improve the day-to-day operations and program offerings of Adult Activity Center. The group, which meets monthly, liaises between visitors and staff. “The council members become knowledgeable about what’s going on with the staff, administration, and programs,” she said, “and when there is a big change, we are able to inform our peers of what’s going on.” Likewise, she’s able to communicate community concerns with staff members. “It’s been very helpful to be on the council,” she said. Before Anne moved to Oregon, she did recreation programming with the U.S. Army in Germany. When she returned stateside, she worked at McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center setting up community education lectures for seniors. “When they ran out of meeting space at the hospital, the Adult Activity Center’s director
ADULTS said we could have monthly meetings here,” she said. She’s been visiting ever since. After she retired from the hospital, she invested herself fully in the Adult Activity Center. For 12 years, she worked seasonally by helping seniors to receive energy assistance in winter months. She hosted the trips program for 15 years. And she is constantly taking part in exercise programs: “I’ve been taking yoga with the same instructor for 18 years,” she said. She adds Silver Sneakers and MELT to round out her active routine. Adult Activity Center is glad to have members on its Advisory Council who have a long history of visits. Anne’s decades-long relationships with patrons — and thorough knowledge of the ins-andouts of daily operations — help her to advocate for her peers and communicate successfully. Thank you for your work, Anne! — JODIE DELSERE

Cordialmente, Michael Wargo, Director
