Tamra Manning spent two nights a week at Willamalane events over the summer to make sure everyone else enjoyed concerts and movies.
TAMRA MANNING is one of our outstanding volunteers. She has volunteered for special events throughout the year. Whenever we need help, Tamra never ceases to amaze us with her dedication. The commitment level that Tamra has shown to Willamalane is incredible. Each summer, Tamra is wholeheartedly involved in our Sounds like Summer series and dedicates two evenings a week so that everyone can enjoy free concerts and movies in the park. Tamra works a great deal in her professional life, and yet she still finds the time to volunteer. Tamra is always a joy to work with and be around. We are so fortunate to have Tamra as a Willamalane volunteer.

Emerald Valley Pickleball Club partners with Willamalane to build pickleball opportunities in Springfield.
Pickleball Fever Sweeps Springfield Club Partners with Willamalane on 8 Outdoor Courts IT HAS NOTHING to do
with brine and cucumbers and everything to do with whiffle balls and paddles. Pickleball is a relatively new sport that has been catching on rapidly across the nation. As its popularity surges in Springfield, Willamalane has met the demand with the completion of eight outdoor, public pickleball courts located at Meadow Park, 851 Mill St. The new courts represent a strong partnership between Willamalane and the Emerald Valley Pickleball Club. The club has played regularly at Bob Keefer Center since its inception two years ago. Today, the club’s membership is 150 strong. Club President Roger Schaljo thinks membership
"Outdoor courts can open the floodgates for increased play and interest." — Roger Schaljo, president Emerald Valley Pickleball Club
will grow rapidly with the addition of the new courts. “Outdoor courts can open the floodgates for increased play and interest,” said Schaljo. “As an example, Bend had 90 pickleball members before outdoor courts were constructed and now has 650 members.” Schaljo envisions the courts being busy throughout the week, especially evenings and weekends. Emerald Valley Pickleball Club is committed to growing the

sport’s presence and popularity in the community, and has worked closely with Willamalane to plan and construct the new courts. Through their own fundraising efforts, the club has raised $12,000 to match Willamalane’s investment in converting two tennis courts into the new pickleball courts. The game is played on a badminton-sized court, with rules similar to tennis. The equipment is also simple, with players using a solid paddle to strike a plastic whiffle ball. Both singles and doubles can play. Along with the outdoor pickleball courts, Willamalane offers indoor court time throughout the week at Bob Keefer Center.
Pickleball: Funny Name, Fun Sport LEGEND HAS IT that pickleball began in the summer of 1965 when the Pritchard family of Washington was bored. They attempted to set up badminton, but no one could find the shuttlecock. They improvised with a whiffle ball, lowered the net, and recycled plywood from a nearby shed to make paddles. Mrs. Pritchard said the sport reminded her of “the Pickle Boat in crew, made of leftover oarsmen from the other boats” — an improvised activity made of leftovers. Two years later, the family adopted a dog and named him Pickles after their new family game.

more than 80 visitors to a trial run of a proposed disc golf course this summer. The participants’ feedback is helping us fine-tune the course layout. The course will be installed in September for test playing and evaluation. Additionally, Willamalane has improved the wetland trail at Clearwater, adding gravel to make the features more accessible in winter months. The Thurston Hills Natural Area trailhead construction is anticipated be completed by early November. The trailhead will feature 46 parking spaces and two bus spaces, a restroom, an interpretive kiosk and a bicycle cleaning station. The space will serve as a launching point into the 665-acre Thurston Hills Natural Area, which will be a hiking, mountain biking and educational destination once more trails are installed. The Thurston Hills Natural Area provides outstanding habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, as well as opportunities for the community to experience nature close to home. Please do not explore this area until the trailhead and trails are developed.
Jesse Maine Memorial Park received a new playground last spring.
More Progress: a New Playground and a New Park • Jesse Maine Memorial Park celebrated the opening of its new playground with a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 1. Neighborhood kids are already swinging and sliding. • Marylhurst Park, a new park at 18th & H streets, is under construction. The
half-acre park will feature swings, a slide and spinner, bike racks, benches and new sidewalks. The official park opening and ribbon cutting is anticipated for September. Willamalane moves ahead on more bond-funded projects, page 16.
Dorris Ranch Restoration Aimed at Preserving Oaks
The Middle Fork Path passes under Oregon white oak at Dorris Ranch. The trees were the focus of restoration over the summer.
At a park known for its iconic filbert trees, conservation efforts are turning to the wide expanse of native Oregon white oaks. Willamalane and the Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council are working to restore oak habitat on the 21 acres of Dorris Ranch that lie adjacent to the park’s well-known filbert orchards. The two organizations started in 2016 by mowing grassy fields to control some of the invasive species that had taken root. This summer, attention shifted to the forested area adjacent to the orchards, where crews re-
moved trees that had moved in on the oaks. Fast-growing sweet cherry, English hawthorn and Douglas-fir prevented the oaks from developing the characteristic wide, spreading canopies that make them such good habitat for wildlife. Hundreds of creatures call oak woodlands home — from western bluebirds to western gray squirrels and deer. The two-year, $250,000 project was funded by Willamalane and a $79,927 grant from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, with assistance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Parks Parks Willamalane Parks Willamalane Park and Recreation District, winner of the 2016 National Gold Medal for excellence in parks and recreation, maintains and operates five recreation facilities and 46 parks and natural areas totaling nearly 1,500 acres. Highlights include 10 waterfront areas, 29 miles of hiking and biking trails, 9 turf and 4 synthetic sports fields and 27 playgrounds. Willamalane offers recreation programs to people of all ages and abilities. Created by voters in 1944, Willamalane is a special tax district, separate from the city of Springfield, with its own boundaries. Not Just for Kids Guiding Hands Help Build Skills My First Sports offers young children an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of sports. But it’s more than just sports for little ones: The classes also provide a unique bonding opportunity for kids and their parents. “When I was a little kid, I was able to play T-ball with my dad,” says Spenser Lind, recreation coordinator at Willamalane. “It’s one of my fondest memories growing up. I’m glad we’re able to give similar memories to these kids and their parents.” Working through athletic challenges with parents can cement relationships, Lind says. “There’s nothing like bonding over sports,” Lind says. “It’s a great time for both kids and their parents.”

customer feedback
Teens and Tweens 'Beaming with Pride' "I just held a birthday party for my 12-yearold daughter at the Bob Keefer Center rock wall. All 12 of the kids have neurogical, developmental and /or behavioral issues. The children all had a wonderful time. The staff took time to make sure everyone felt included and supported. The teens and tweens that attended were reluctant to participate in climbing such a tall wall. By the end of the party all of the kids were participating and cheering on each other's successes. The staff encouraged all of them to climb higher, set goals at different parts of the wall. By the end everyone was beaming with pride. I would definitely recommend this venue for parties and team-building activities." — Caireen Tingley-Lounsbury

New to Medicare? Willamalane is raising funds to replant trees affected by the spread of a fungal infection at Dorris Ranch. We will be removing orchards affected by eastern filbert blight in stages over the next two decades, and replanting with varieties resistant to the infection. You can help Willamalane FIGHT the BLIGHT — by sponsoring a tree, a row or an orchard. Sponsor a single ‘Jefferson’ blight-
resistant filbert tree, and help save a living piece of local history. $25
Sponsor a row of five trees. Orchardists will plant ‘Jefferson’ filberts in rows, capped off with pollinating varieties. $100
Sponsor an acre. The 258 acres of
Dorris Ranch include 11 orchards and 9,809 trees. $2,500
Present an orchard. Help Willamalane secure a lasting future for the valley’s agricultural heritage. Costs vary.
