Board of Directors
Welcome The photograph with Izabelle Hardiman-Richey illustrates the reason I, and so many of our employees, come to work each day. We work to deliver exceptional parks and recreation to enrich the lives of everyone we serve. Marylhurst Park (story, page 16) is our newest park and the latest example of how your support allows us to develop these great places.
Willamalane's board is composed of five members elected to serve four-year terms. Public board meetings are usually held on the second Wednesday of the month, 6:30 p.m., at Bob Keefer Center for Sports and Recreation. Meeting agendas are available a few days in advance at willamalane.org.
In addition to Marylhurst, we completed the Thurston Hills trailhead (story, page 12). The trailhead welcomes visitors to Board President Anne Ballew, left, and the Thurston Hills Natural Area — some Superintendent Vincent Martorello 665 acres of open space, remarkable lend their hands as 6-year-old Izabelle views and newly constructed trails. The Hardiman-Richey cuts the ribbon on Oct. 18 at Marylhurst Park. Thurston Hills Natural Area has been a vision for this community dating back some 15-20 years, and as a result of your support through the 2012 bond measure, we have been able to bring your community vision to fruition.

“I love biking on the Middle Fork and Mill Race paths. The paths are smooth and well maintained and that makes it great for road biking. Because I am on a path I do not have to deal with traffic but instead get to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature as I work out!” — Brandon Lemcke, aquatics supervisor "I enjoy pickup basketball open gyms. It’s fun to drop in, meet new people and have a friendly, competitive game of hoops. It’s convenient because I can get my cardio in there, and then add on some strength training right afterward in the fitness center. — Ryan Taxara, early childhood and youth program manager

the trails The newest trails begin at the new trailhead at 7575 McKenzie Highway. The trailhead features a parking area, walkways, lighting, restrooms, a bike wash station, and an informational kiosk that will help you navigate your adventure. From the trailhead, you’ll embark on the North Access Trail, a 2-mile route with a compacted gravel surface. The North Access Trail steadily climbs the north-facing slope of the hills through conifer forests. Gradual switchbacks lead to a junction with the 1.3-mile natural surface Spine Trail. “We call it the Spine Trail because it traverses a steep, rocky ridge in the upper portion of the natural area,” said Willamalane Natural Resources Planner Fraser MacDonald. “It makes for a beautiful, lush hike.” At the south side of the natural area, off Bob Straub Parkway, visitors can walk or

natural habitats The variety of habitats here — including prairie and oak savanna, bluffs, oak woodlands, rock cliffs and outcrops, springs and conifer forests — are home to an observed 33 plant species and 38 animal species. These include nine Oregon Conservation Strategy plant and animal species, which have been identified by the state as species of
particular interest and priority for conservation efforts. No threatened or endangered species live within the natural area, but sensitive rare species have been spotted, such as wayside aster and slender campion. Western bluebirds, chipping sparrows, slender-billed nuthatches and Lewis’ woodpeckers make their homes in the oak and prairie habitat. Western gray squirrels, which may be a familiar fixture in backyards, prefer the continuous canopy of oak woodlands to dangerous roads.

When visitors enter Thurston Hills Natural Area through the trailhead and journey along the North Access Trail, they are traversing what was known as the Gray Jaqua property. This area was settled around 1855. Willamalane, in partnership with the city of Springfield, purchased the entire Gray Jaqua property in 2012. A state-designated Community Forest occupies land to the southwest of the Gray Jaqua property. This was established as Oregon’s first Community Forest with the intention of protecting the land from development and preserving it for the educational and recreational enjoyment of the community. To the south and west of the Community Forest are two conservation easements purchased by Willamalane in 2013 and 2014. The acquisition was partially funded by the Bonneville Power Administration as part of a program to mitigate the effects of dam operations.

With the development of Thurston Hills Natural Area, Willamalane nears the end of a successful string of park and facility projects funded by a bond measure voters passed in 2012. "Voters trusted us with $20 million to expand trails and preserve parkland, and Willamalane delivered," said Superintendent Vincent Martorello. tain biking community has helped with the construction of the area in a big way — more than 60 people have contributed over 600 volunteer hours of labor and professional knowledge so far. Our biggest partner has been Disciples of Dirt, a Eugene mountain bike club whose members are known throughout the Pacific
Northwest as excellent stewards of local trails. “It’s stunning that we have mountain biking opportunities coming right into town,” said Peter O’Toole, trail work coordinator for Disciples of Dirt. “We’ve been interested in developing trails in urban areas for two decades, and we’re incredibly pleased to
partner with Willamalane to make this happen.” "Everyone is super stoked for this — the whole mountain biking community," said Misha Fuller, a Disciples of Dirt member. There’s more to come. Willamalane has several more miles of trail planned — including a mountain bike-only downhill trail and others that hikers can use to explore this beautiful natural asset.

Marylhurst Park, at the corner of 18th and H streets, is a small park where kids can play and neighbors can gather.
New Park Nurtures Neighborhood Vibe you can find Springfield's
newest park tucked into a quarter-acre lot at the corner of 18th and H streets. This mini park is big on impact: It features three playground elements, along with a playing surface comprised of soft, engineered wood fiber. Newly planted shade trees, a grassy play area, benches and bike racks provide an attractive gathering place. “This park demonstrates how a simplistic, innovative design can turn a small, rarely used quarter-acre lot into a vibrant neighborhood gathering place,” said Willamalane Superintendent Vincent Martorello. “Large
expanses of land are not always available, or needed, to create a community park. There is always a place for smaller neighborhood parks that are simple in design, but large in impact.” Marylhurst Park neighborhood residents voted on various design concepts. When the results were tabulated, the clear choice voiced by neighbors was to develop a park with a children’s play area that would encourage exercise and activities. Funding for the park, totaling around $111,000 for construction costs, came out of bond measure funds approved by voters in 2012.
Oak Woodland Restoration Makes Room for Wildlife next time you wan-
der the Gary Walker Trail System at Dorris Ranch, turn your gaze skyward. You might notice a lot more sky peeking through the canopy, filtering in where invasive species have been removed. Willamalane and the Middle Fork Willamette Watershed Council worked to restore oak habitat on the 21 acres of Dorris Ranch that lie adjacent to the park's well-known filbert orchards. This included removing
trees that had moved in on the native white oaks. Fast-growing sweet cherry, English hawthorn and Douglas-fir prevented the oaks from developing the characteristic wide, spreading canopies that make them such good habitat for wildlife. For now, you'll see sky above the trails. Give the oaks a few years to spread their crowns, and watch as the birds and squirrels make their homes in the branches.

Natural Resources Planner Fraser MacDonald helped plan the new course at Clearwater Park. "It's been fun coming out with my buddies and enjoying the quiet park and fresh air," he says.
Disc Golf Fits Park to a Tee
Try New Course at Clearwater Park
Clearwater park
welcomes disc golf fans everywhere to play on the new 12-acre, nine-hole golf course. This is Springfield's first disc golf course, filling a need for a popular activity in Willamalane's park system. “Disc golf is a very popular and growing sport, and the public identified the need for a new course in the community. We’ve since responded to that feedback and we’re now excited to offer this new recreational opportunity, while still retaining the natural beauty and integrity of the park,” said Fraser MacDonald, Willamalane’s natural resources planner. The course is designed around the existing natural area, topography and habitats, while also keeping the safety of other park users in mind. Hole No. 1 starts just north of the Middle Fork Path trailhead, with the course opening up to a large grassy area lined with mature trees, which add challenge, variety and scenery. The layout was also designed to accommodate a variety of skill levels, including beginner to intermediate levels. The course is now open to the public throughout the year, with play based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fit in the Family Terri Bowden, left, Ila Bye, Sherry Kleman and Lindy Lindbloom enjoy swimming twice a week at Willamalane Park Swim Center.
Workouts Spell Wellness for Two Generations of Women WHAT BEGAN AT SCHOOL SWIMMING LESSONS nearly five decades ago has blossomed into a lifetime of fitness, fun and family ties at Willamalane Park Swim Center. Sisters Terri Bowden and Lindy Lindbloom swim every Tuesday and Thursday, along with their 83-year-old mother, Ila Bye, and friend Sherry Kleman, 62. Often Loretta Macauley, Kleman's 89-year-old mother, joins them as well. “Sometimes we go to the deep pool with life jackets, and sometimes we're in the shallow pool,” said Bowden, 62. “It's a really fun way to exercise easily without hurting your bones and joints.” Swimming together has grown into more than a workout: It's 24 | Willamalane Park and Recreation District • w i l l a m a l a n e . o r g
also a great way to stay social. “We meet a lot of other mothers and daughters and make friends with people who are here,” Bowden said. “Then we get in the hot tub and relax, and sometimes after that we go to lunch. It's just a really fun experience where we get some good exercise and have a blast with everybody.” Bowden and Lindbloom started swimming at Willamalane Park Swim Center when they were kids as part of their elementary education. Decades later, the pool offers a welcome routine for the group. “This has brought us closer together,” Bowden said. “We have laughs together. We know when we can be together, and we look forward to it.”

Pre-swim Team
Age Group
Pre-swim Team is designed for children who have completed the swim lesson series and want to try lap swimming. Professional coaches build swimmers’ confidence along with their skills, preparing them for participation in Willamalane Swim Club. Swimmers get a taste of competitive swimming by participating in a “mini meet” at the end of the session. Dates and times are yet to be determined. Please check willamalaneswimclub.org for registration information.

Willamalane Preschools
Building Social Skills in a Nurturing Environment When the Johnson family began their search for a preschool for their daughter, Sidney, they looked for safety, affordability and a place where she could grow and learn with other children. "Having a place that was very safe was important to me, and somewhere where she would have a lot of fun," says mom Robin Johnson. "She's always bringing home artwork and talking about how much fun she's having, how much she loves school, how much she loves her teachers."

to Career Change Leads Instructor to New Passion
F
ITNESS FIRST? For Jessica Auxier, exercise was an afterthought. She started with a passion for theater, then climbed the corporate ladder in her 20s and 30s. That all changed in 2012, when a difficult layoff led her to find an outlet in a life-changing P90X class. “I became hooked. After my very first class, I told my instructor, ‘I want to do this. I want to do what you do,’” she said. That very weekend, she took a class to become certified in instructing P90X LIVE. Today, Auxier teaches three classes: P90X LIVE, PiYo LIVE and Core de Force LIVE. “All three classes are able to be modified for any fitness level,” she said. “I’ve seen people come who have no experience and build up, and I’ve seen people come in who are strong already and move it up a level.”

Weight Loss Competition Jan. 30-March 20 $50/person
Jessica Auxier teaches P90X LIVE, PiYo LIVE and Core de Force LIVE. "I love being that person who can motivate," she says. CONTINUED from page 46
To be certified to teach, Auxier had to undergo nine hours of intense training for each class. She reflects on those training weekends fondly: “Last summer I went to New Orleans to be trained on Core de Force with 500 other people,” she said. “It was brutal, but it was so much fun to go with friends and make connections with other instructors.” Auxier is grateful for the last year she has spent as a physical health and fitness teacher and group exercise instructor. “These classes I’ve been teaching for the last year, they’ve become my family. They’ve helped me get through one of the biggest transitions of my life, going from a corporate career to teaching group fitness.” Auxier’s favorite part of group exercise is challenging her students to perform at their peak — and being challenged by them in return. “I like when someone goes for a higher-weight dumbbell and encourages me to, as well,” she said. “I love being that person who can motivate, inspire, and push others to do better every time.”

Age Is No Obstacle
W
HEN FITNESS INSTRUCTOR Richard Strunk went back to school for professional fitness training, he figured he had a ready-made audience ready for his instruction. He was in his 60s and knew that he might have success helping older adults reach their fitness goals. Now 70, Strunk has many dedicated students who enjoy his classes: Stability Balls, Strength & Flexibility, and Intro to Weight Training. “There are no bad exercises for older adults,” Strunk said, “just exercises with more risk than others. But most adults in reasonable health can do most of the things they want to do with the right training and practice.” Strunk points to one of his students to demonstrate the success of careful training. “I have one lady lady, almost 90 years old, coming to class,” he said. “She needs a walker just to get in here from her car, but still keeps coming and enjoying herself. She can still do things in her yard if she’s careful, she can still have a life.” Strunk’s classes are often filled with laughter, cajoling and camaraderie. “The neatest thing about these classes is all the people I get to meet and interact with,” he said. “The relationships make me want to come to work because I know I’m going to have a good time with all the people I’m around.”
Weigh-ins: Tuesdays at Bob Keefer Center, 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. 99% of contestants who finish the competition lose weight!

Learn to let go of items that are no longer meaningful to you.
Ten Tips for Tidy Living 1. Visualize what you want your space to look like. 2. Make a list. Identify trouble spots that you'd like to declutter. 3. Use four boxes to sort your items. Label them Keep, Relocate, Give Away, and Trash. 4. Pull out a timer. Dedicating five or ten minutes at a time will help you stay focused. 5. Start with the space that bothers you most. Afterward, you'll feel like you've had a big win — and you'll want to keep going! 6. Focus on one room at a time. Sticking to one area will keep you from getting overwhelmed. 7. Test if it works. Many of us are hanging on to old tech. Does it turn on? Is it still useful? If the answer is "no," recycle or donate it. 8. Try Freecycle. Sometimes it's hard to let go of unused belongings. It can be easier to "rehome" them using a service like Freecycle. 9. Hold off on shopping. Try not to bring new items into your home until you've made space for them. 10. Try one of Willamalane's decluttering classes. We'll help you develop an actionable plan!

Willamalane is raising funds to replant trees affected by the spread of a fungal infection at Dorris Ranch. We will be removing orchards affected by eastern filbert blight in stages over the next two decades, and replanting with varieties resistant to the infection. You can help Willamalane FIGHT the BLIGHT — by sponsoring a tree, a row or an orchard. Sponsor a single ‘Jefferson’ blight-
resistant filbert tree, and help save a living piece of local history. $25
Sponsor a row of five trees. Orchardists
SUPPORT WHAT YOU LOVE
will plant ‘Jefferson’ filberts in rows, capped off with pollinating varieties. $100
Sponsor an acre. The 258 acres of
Dorris Ranch include 11 orchards and 9,809 trees. $2,500
