Walden has also worked hard to ensure that Oregon service members and veterans receive the benefits they have earned through years of brave service. Walden earned a bachelor’s of science degree from the University of Oregon in 1981. He and Mylene celebrated 32 years of marriage in August 2014, and make their home in Hood River where they’ve been small-business owners since 1986. Commencement Speaker and Honorary Degree Recipient The Honorable Dr. Jane Lubchenco Marine Ecologist and Environmental Scientist, Honorary Doctor of Science Jane Lubchenco is a marine ecologist and environmental scientist internationally renowned for her expertise in oceans, climate change and interactions between the environment and human well-being. In 2008, President Barack Obama selected her as one of the expert advisors on his “Science and Technology Team.” In 2009, she became the first woman to be appointed under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Lubchenco received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Colorado College, an MS in zoology from the University of Washington and a PhD in ecology from Harvard University. Her academic career as a professor began at Harvard University (1975-1977) and continued at Oregon State University (1977-2009) until her appointment as NOAA administrator.

William Swindells Ann and Bill Swindells Charitable Trust, Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters William Swindells is one of Oregon’s most influential business and community leaders. He has served on Willamette University's Board of Trustees since 1971, including as chairman between 1987 and 1995, and he became a life member in 2001. Swindells successfully oversaw the university’s sesquicentennial campaign and served as co-chair of the campaign task force for Willamette's capital campaign during the early 1980s. Swindells majored in engineering at Stanford University, earning a BS in 1953. He joined Willamette Valley Lumber Company, which was established by his grandfather in 1905. The company developed into a lumber giant called Willamette Industries. At its peak in the 1990s, Willamette Industries owned or managed 1.7 million acres

of timberland and operated more than 100 wood products manufacturing facilities in 23 states and in Ireland, France and Mexico. He served the company in many capacities including senior vice president of marketing and building, executive vice president, president of the forest products division, president, CEO and chairman of the board (1984-2002). Swindells has been a generous supporter of Willamette University over the years, with major gifts to the Mary Stuart Rogers Music Center, the Swindells Crew Program and the Sparks Center remodel. In 1977, he and his family established Willamette University’s Irene Gerlinger Swindells Fund, which supported scholarships to undergraduates with interests in music. The fund also supports an endowed chair, the Irene Gerlinger Swindells Eminent Scholar in Music. Through the Ann and Bill Swindells Charitable Trust, he supports cultural, environmental and educational organizations throughout Oregon.

Willamette University President Stephen E. Thorsett was raised in Salem. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics, summa cum laude, from Carleton College and his doctoral degree in physics from Princeton University. As an astrophysicist, he helped develop two of NASA’s orbiting telescopes, and he and his team discovered the oldest known planet, called Methuselah. He has held research and teaching positions at Caltech, Princeton and the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was dean of the science division and founder of their California Teach program for training new math and science teachers.

Since 2011, Thorsett has been the president of Willamette University, where as a teenager he worked in the dishroom. At Willamette, his goals include strengthening the university’s historic connections to Oregon and the Northwest, solidifying its position as a leader in our region for rigorous, high quality undergraduate, management and legal education, and raising the resources needed to provide access to a Willamette education for the most talented high school graduates, regardless of their financial means. Thorsett lives in Salem with his wife, Rachel, also a physicist. Their daughter, Laura, is a freshman at Harvard College.

2014-15 Alumni Award Winners Today’s graduates enter a community of accomplished, diligent and mindful alumni. Bearcats around the world continue to pursue their own hopes and goals while united by their shared experiences and Willamette’s enduring ethos of service. The following awards are made by the Willamette University Alumni Association Board of Directors and come from alumni nominations. Y O U N G A L U M N I L E A D E R S H I P AW A R D Recognizes graduates from the past 10 years for outstanding leadership in their vocation, community service and service to the university. L E S T L E J . S PA R K S M E D A L L I O N Given for enduring commitment to the university, as embodied by one of our most revered alumni, Lestle J. Sparks ’19. D I S T I N G U I S H E D A L U M N I C I TAT I O N Given for exemplary performance or contribution in any field, cause or life pursuit.

Paul Boaden ’77 Lestle J. Sparks Medallion Since graduating from Willamette, Boaden has found numerous ways to support his alma mater and his Kappa Sigma fraternity. Despite the demands of his career with United Airlines and AirServ Corporation, Boaden served on the Willamette University Alumni Association’s board of directors from 2003 to 2010, consistently contributing his time, resources and ever-optimistic attitude. He also acted as an Admission Office Alumni Ambassador, helping to recruit and select qualified students. In addition, through his work with Kappa Sigma, Boaden helped rebuild a dwindling chapter presence and make it a positive force both on campus and in the local community.

As a Switzer Environmental Fellow at Yale, she is involved in sustainability efforts, including working with the New Haven Food Policy Council to advance food access and justice. She is also an entrepreneur working on a start-up company to raise and process crickets for human consumption in Portland. A well-respected and recognized public servant in his beloved home of Hawaii, and a retired Air Force veteran, Bugado is an excellent example of a Willamette alumnus living the university’s noble motto. In a remarkable 36-year career with the County of Hawaii Parks and Recreation department, Bugado transformed the island’s services for seniors and people with disabilities. As director of elderly services and activities, he oversaw six major programs that provided critical information, assistance, transportation and in-home services. In recognition of his selfless commitment to others, the Hawaii House of Representatives and State Senate honored Bugado as an outstanding civic servant.

As a Willamette student during a tumultuous period in American history, Short turned her commitment to diversity into action. Inspired by efforts to end segregation and discrimination in the South, she started a student civil rights organization on campus and also worked in Tennessee and Mississippi on literacy, voter registration and Freedom Summer programs. Persevering in often-dangerous circumstances, she endured harassment and abuse and was jailed five times. Later, through her 23-year career as an executive recruiter and her volunteer efforts for nonprofits, Short continued to work and advocate on behalf of diversity, minority communities and social justice issues.

Academic Regalia The style of academic regalia most commonly worn in the United States dates back to colonial times, although it was not formally adopted until near the end of the 19th century, when it was chosen as appropriate attire by the Intercollegiate Commission. It has remained the general standard in America since, although some variations occur at individual institutions. THE GOWN The gown has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, because it covers any dress of rank or social standing. In the United States, black is the traditional color for academic gowns, although some institutions allow holders of doctoral degrees to wear robes in the university’s colors. Gowns have pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree, long closed sleeves with a slit in the arm or wrist for the master’s degree, and full bell double sleeves for the doctor’s degree. Bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have no trimming. For the doctor’s degree, the gown is often faced down the front with velvet,
