Pastor Willard L Avery 1989 - 2014 Pastor Willard L. Avery was born September 15, 1950 in Smithfield, North Carolina. He is the third oldest of eleven children to the union of the late Lauretta and Roscoe Avery, Sr. Upon completion of high school, Pastor Avery enlisted into the United States Air Force in June 1970 and his first duty station was at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico. After serving one year in Vietnam, he was blessed with another assignment back to Holloman in November 1972. It was on this assignment that the conviction, conversion and baptism to Christ fell upon him under the preaching of the late Pastor Willie Holly, Jr. at St. Mary’s Baptist Church. Following his heart, Pastor Avery united with the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in 1974 and met his helpmate, the former Sister Margaret L. Lee. His service at New Zion included serving in the music and laymen ministry, Sunday School and Training Union departments under the leadership of Pastor Wilson Holly. From the beginning of his Christian walk, Pastor Avery served the body of Christ with
humility and diligence in various ministries. Under the pastorate of Dr. James A. Hopkins, he was ordained as Deacon on February 20, 1977. The anointing of the Holy Ghost fell upon Pastor Avery and answered God’s call to declare the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He received his license to preach God’s Word at New Zion on May 27, 1984. God’s call to Pastor Avery equipped him with the essentials to minister in any capacity God’s master plan required. From June 1984 to May 1985, God’s plan led Pastor Avery to fill the position of Associate Pastor of the Inspirational Gospel Fellowship at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota. The United States Air Force Recruiting Service saw another need for Pastor Avery in the land of Enchantment. In
June 1985, he and his family returned to New Mexico. The Air Force may have had a plan for Pastor Avery, but God saw a greater need for him. God continued to use His vessel by having Pastor Avery ordained as New Zion’s assistant pastor in 1988. As Pastor Avery continued to serve as an assistant pastor, Dr. Hopkins re-ceived the Lord’s call to pastor his previous church Antioch Baptist Church in Albuquerque, NM. The call was received and answered by Dr. Hopkins, which held New Zion with an absence of a Shepherd. New Zion, through the aid of the Holy Spirit, saw the calling on Pastor Avery’s life and prepared for their blessing to be received. New Zion called him to be their Shepherd and installed him on Sunday, January 8, 1989. He is a 20 year veteran of the United States Air Force and has had many colorful assignments which were Holloman AFB, NM; Phan Rang AB, Vietnam; NKP AB, Thailand; RAF Fairford Air Base, England; Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota, and the 3541st USAF Recruiting Squadron, Lackland AFB, TX. In 1991, Pastor Avery retired honorably from the military as a Master Sergeant. He has been a Civil Service employee for 23 years, and is currently employed with the 586 Flight Test Squadron at Holloman AFB, NM as an administrative specialist. When all is built upon the solid foundation of Jesus Christ, nothing can tear it down. Pastor Avery’s Christian roots and pastoral ministry was deeply influenced by the compassionate and high visibility ministry of the late Dr. Hopkins. Pastor Avery has served as the Second Vice Moderator of the New Hope District Association, NM and Financial Secretary for the Mt.
Olive Baptist State Convention, NM Inc. Pastor Avery’s ministry and leadership has been serving the Alamogordo community and as well as other places for many years. His primary goal in minisminis try is to relentlessly preach and teach the Word of God, such that people will be encouraged to make perper petual and radical commitments to the Kingdom’s agenda. Under his tutelage, God called five sons and four daughters to be set apart for the work of the Ministry. The Lord has blessed six of them to be ordained and sent out with a charge. adNew Zion was also blessed through his ad ministration to have her first Minister of Music Ordination service on April 19, 2008. Pastor Avery is blessed to have a devoted wife and helpmate for thirty-eight years who tirelessly affirms and sup-
ports his ministry. They are blessed with three gifted children Minister Sireana R. Bickham, and her husband Prentiss of Alamogordo, New Mexico; Minister Will, II of Ruston, Louisiana; and Minister Lauretta, a senior at Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana; two grandchild, Aleyah and Avery of Alamogordo, New Mexico. After more than 25 years of leadership, Pastor Avery continues to serve with vigor and tenacity. He is dedicated to God’s work and he exemplifies the character of Christ in his everyday living and service. Many look upon him with admiration and respect. He has a genuine concern for and commitment to the spiritual growth and development of God’s people.

GUEST SPEAKER Pastor Rodney Mills “The Mailman”
P
astor Rodney A. Mills aka “Mailman” is known for the special delivery messages he delivers to the body of Christ straight from Heaven’s post office as instructed by the Holy Ghost. Pastor Mills began preaching the Word of God as a young adult and served as an associate minister at his home church for three years and an additional four years under the direct leadership of his spiritual father in the Gospel. After which at the appointed time, God called him to begin Solid Rock Worldwide Outreach Ministries. He was also blessed in 1980 to establish The Virginia Aires, which are now a nationally known and respected recording group; whose focus is preaching the gospel in song with Pastor Mills as its group leader. God has crowned him with wisdom and given him the knowledge of what a Godly pastor should do to fulfill God’s purpose for his church. God has further revealed to him what is needed to achieve this mission: A Heavenly Vision, A Pastor after God’s Own Heart, Divine Order, Anointed and Appointed Church Leaders, and Dedicated, Prayerful and faithfilled leaders to assist the Pastor with His many God-given tasks on this earth. He states, “My priority as a Pastor is pastoring the sheepfold of God and going wherever he sends me to preach the Gospel. Whether through revivals, crusades or music ministry.” Pastor Rodney Mills is married to Mrs. Gloria Mills and together they share 6 wonderful children.
