FINAL MAJOR PROJECT STATEMENT OF INTENT Name: William Cotterill Blog Address: http://w-cotterill1013fmp.blogspot.co.uk/
Rationale Throughout this module I plan to expose my passion for printed medium, through a series of briefs that work with a wide range of hand made deliverables; Publications, mail outs, CD sleeves, skateboard decks and garments. I’m driven by producing products that people can hold and appreciate for the smell of ink, quality of print or stock choice. I am going to complete research driven briefs for the educational sector aimed at varied audiences including: Northern skateboarders, Musicians, Museums, Book shops, Students and Children. I am a graphic designer, who focuses on image making, producing work that pays attention to both geometry and symmetry with a strong interest in the response of the viewer. Research driven content & concepts executed through a range of practical process including print finishing, screen-printing and laser cutting. Concentrating on informing and educating my audience through publication design and handcrafted printed matter.
Subjects / Themes Throughout this module I intend on working with a mixture of different themes and subjects, that not only interest me, but also push my practice in the direction I desire to be in prior to leaving the course. I want to produce well-considered work that deals with political/social/environmental issues and educates its audience. GENERAL THEMES: -Publications, paper stock & printing processes. -Retail, Campaigns & exhibitions working to a set environment. -Illustration, Image making and hand rendered type. -Information graphics -Educational & Informative.
SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: -The northern Skateboarding scene. -Djent Music and progressive metal since 2010. -Pyramids and their relation to the constellations. -Global warming and miss-information. -Extinct animals and rare species of animals that have lived on Earth. AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: -Skateboarders Aged 14-30 -Museums, Schools, Archaeology and Geology Students. -Metal Music fans, Guitar shops, Musicians. PRODUCTION /DISTRIBUTION METHODS: -Online Bookshops and boutique book stores. -Exhibitions Campaigns and launch events. -Online shops, Etsy Big cartel and cargo collective.
Design Disciplines / Creative Development The design disciplines I’m going to focus on are mainly image making through publication design. I’m interested in systematic processes, and creating in depth concepts, for example the folding of pages or the angles of a die cut. I want my work to be appreciated for its hand-made quality, therefore I’m going to tailor all of my briefs towards making and producing products that can be held by my audience, being able to hold and appreciate a book for the choice of stock and finer details is something that is important to me. In terms of creative development, I plan on exploring colour through printing, selecting some briefs with considerations like using a two-colour palette and experimenting with CMYK. I’m interested in minimal and effective use of colour and pantone sampling colours from everyday physical subjects.
Practical Skills / Workshops – what, why and when? The practical skills I intend of developing and applying during this module are mainly print based, I want to work with screen print and digital print to fully recognize and understand both print processes and perfected outcomes. I screen printed some garments during the last semester but want to expand on that this practical process gaining more knowledge of print. I want to further establish my style of illustration as a unique approach to a style of drawing, Illustration drives my work, and therefore I want to continue this ongoing exploration of mark marking. Spot varnishes and print finishing are areas I want to expose in my portfolio through this module showing that I can work with a range of different finishes including spot Varnish and Foil block. Last module I really enjoyed working with wood, and this is something thatʼs apparent across my work throughout the whole course. I want to continue working closely with machinery in woodwork, progressing with CNC and laser cutting to produce an interesting range of deliverables.
Brief 1: The Universes Pupils SB | Skateboarding Event and

Clothing/Accessory range. (10 week brief)
Rationale: I plan to explore the development of my clothing brand ʻThe Universes Pupilsʼ, moving away from boutique garments and clothing cuts to create a skateboarding division to be marketed online and in independent skateboard shops within the U.K. Investigate the current skateboarding scene, to establish, a range of innovative skateboarding products, to be sold alongside the brands other range. Design a skateboarding event around these products to celebrate their release. I have chosen this brief to further develop a body of work that shows successful product range and the ability to distribute work through proposed events and promotion. The deliverables allow me to work across a wide range of handmade outcomes including a Look-book, Proposed Event & Promotional Material, Skateboard decks and other hardware.
Brief 2: The Rising Of Djent | Publication & Informative pack (10 week brief) Rationale:
Deadline
29/05/2013
I plan to design and create an informative & educational pack aimed at metal music lovers aged between 1630 explaining the uprising of the heavy metal movement ʻDjentʼ. The pack needs to cover every aspect of Djent music and its influences from progressive metal and how itʼs developed since emerging in 2010. Design a publication split into appropriate sections and put together from well thought out and planned research. This needs to be accompanied by other printed deliverables, integrating all aspects of the pack to make up one overall product to be distributed in music shops/guitar retailers/Metal clothing stores. Iʼve chosen this brief as its research driven and will allow me to conduct interviews with people from a music scene that Iʼm fascinated by. Working again, with publication design this brief allows me to further develop my print skills putting together a book that has a large amount of content to be delivered.
Brief 3: Global Warming isnʼt cool (5 week Brief)
Deadline
29/05/2013
Rationale: Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. However since 1998 the met office has actually released data showing there has been no evidence showing warming since. The earth has been through thousands of years of temperature change from ice ages to the medieval warm period, In my opinion Global warming is a myth. I plan to create a light hearted campaign to educate people on some of the faults with miss-information relating to global warming. This brief allows me to explore wordplay, double entredes and copy through an educational pack and mailout. Distribution is the key to earning, this brief will allow me to focus on how audience, method of distribution and target market work alongside the design of a product.
Brief 4: Pyramids and the relationship to the constellations |
Deadline
29/05/2013
Publication & Book Launch Event (7 week brief) (Collaboration)
Rationale: I plan to produce and launch a publication with additional promotional material exploring the intricate design of Pyramids around the world and their relationship/connection to the constellations. Inform and educate your audience with rare and interesting facts about the pyramids selected to inspire our readers.
This brief gives me to the chance to work on my collaborative skills and produce work in collaboration with another designer for my portfolio. Working with Oliver Cassell a type/layout driven designer will help me to define specific roles within the design process and progress with image making alongside the work of another designer. To launch our publication we plan on holding an exhibition/book launch, this live event will help me understanding marketing, promotion and event organisation in the relation to the distribution of my work.
Brief 5: Extinct Animal Pack | Informative/Education mail out and

integrated campaign. (7 week Brief)
Rationale: I plan to research and produce a creative pack about unusual extinct animals that have roamed the earth. An informative pack to be sold in museums and appreciated for its delicacy and aesthetics to people interested in archaeology and geology. History peels away around us as we speak, like layers of skin. The pack will be an insight into some of the animals that have lived on earth, academically focused with creative but well presented data. This brief allows me to deal with political subject matter, expressing my own opinions on a matter I think is important. As a designer individuality and tone of voice is something I need to develop and I think a brief constructed purely around my own viewpoints allows me to focus on the viewers response and interpretation.
