How is hyper reality used within design to create a perception of our own future?
Dissertation Jenny Hutton Tutor Rationale (200 words) During This semester there are a series of skills and opportunities I want to capitalise on, Diversity is key and developing my practical skills with the use of the college facilities is essential; Study Skills- Conducting research is imperative to building a strong concept. This year I want to expand on my methods of research, completing study Visits, Collecting primary sources, using archives, libraries and magazines. Software Skills – Last year we built up a small amount of knowledge of CSS and HTML but this semester I want to expand and build on this understanding using Dreamweaver to code websites and learn more about design for web. My approach to design is very practical and hands-on; being able to code and develop design for online use will help to connect the different areas of my practice together. This year I aim to produce a lot more type driven design to contrast with my illustrative style, therefore in terms of software skills I aspire to become accustom to Fontographer and my overall knowledge of the technical side typography. Other software skills I wish to pursue are within after-effects working closely with motion graphics, using sound and time within design is something that really excites me and I want to incorporate more motion into my work this semester. Professional Practice- I have chosen briefs working mainly in music publishing and Promotion, Fashion branding and Identity, retail branding and Interiors and branding and Identity. Contrasting to my practice in first year these are all areas I am yet work with within but I feel that on completion of my degree I would be happy going down. Working ethically is going to be a big part of my practice this semester, I want to be a designer who is concerned about production methods, message and audience not a designer who works for status and profit. Practical Skills- Continuing the development of my hand rendered and digital illustration skills through constant practice of drawing is something I want to pursue. This will be an extension from the skills I developed in this area during 1st and second year but looking at a more definitive style and approach to illustration working with pointillism. My briefs tailor the skills I want to convey, Laser Cutting & screen print are two very strong personal interests that I feel I need to capitalize on as I don’t feel I have used the facilities we have on offer to their full potential, These are both skills that direct the sort of practice I want to go into, being a creative designer who can work in a multitude of mediums. Finally, My motivation within design is working with a perceived outcome to an arrangement of space, exhibitions and installations are areas of design I’m yet to explore but feel very enthusiastic towards. They offer a chance to work experimentally with 3d materials and media, this is where I feel my skills lie within graphic design. Statement of Intent (SOI) - (400 words)
-In week One I am to start conducing research and concept development into My collaborative brief with Sadie and my personal brief looking at design for fashion. This will involve a series of visits to places such as the royal armouries and the Leeds Archives, This will help to kick off the design process and provide initial ideas to get started. -In week two I am to be continuing the same two briefs with content/concept building still ongoing but starting initial drawings and designs to inform the direction of each brief. -In week 3 I aim to start the practical work and printing of my design for fashion brief, experimenting with textiles and garments within screen-printing. Within my collaborative brief with Sadie we will be starting to produce and experiment with laser cutting and our shop installation. This week will be mainly a development of practical skills, building, making, designing and producing. -In week 4 I will be continuing the production element of my personal design for fashion brief and my collaboration brief But I will also be starting to research into sign writing and British humour for mine and James’s collaborative brief. This body of research will be based around a series of visits to comedy clubs and events. In the fourth week I will also be starting my additional brief working with design for the music industry, this will be based around concept building and idea generation. -In week 5 the production of my personal brief and collaborative brief with Sadie with still be ongoing, printing garments and building our exhibition space. At this point in time some consideration for the web element of my personal brief will have come into place, looking at web development and the building of websites. My collaboration with James will have moved to more practical development, experimenting with 3d materials and media in a typographic fashion. My additional brief will have progressed a considerable amount as it’s a smaller brief, going through clarification, production printing and resolution, ready to presented and submitted to the client at the end of the week. -In week 6 My collaborative brief with James will be coming to an end stringing all of our research and practical work together ready for presentation and evaluation. Our Mural and Final pieces will be completed in this week. My live brief working with Branding and Identity will be just starting. Idea generation and research into this brief will be one of the main aspects of this week but continuation of practical development within my personal brief and collaborative brief with said will be ongoing. -In week 7 The production and resolution of my live brief will be taking place, the installation of my collaborative brief with Sadie will be happening and my personal brief will be moving toward design for web. -In week 8 the installation and application of my live brief will be taking place, applying decals to the companies van and delivering letterheads to their office. I will also be starting to pull together my two other main briefs for evaluation and presentation. -In week 9 I will be presenting my two main briefs, submitting my live brief and start winding down the design process in terms of being my briefs to a close. -In week 10 any final measures will be taking place, finalizing work and getting it ready for submission, ongoing evaluation will be summed up and an overall evaluation will be completed.
