MODULE SUBMISSON FORM SUBMISSION DEADLINE:

WEDNESDAY 14TH DECEMBER – 12 – 1pm

Rationale (200 words) During This semester there are a series of skills and opportunities I want to capitalise on, Diversity is key and developing my practical skills with the use of the college facilities is essential; Study Skills- Conducting research is imperative to building a strong concept. This year I want to expand on my methods of research, completing study Visits, Collecting primary sources, using archives, libraries and magazines. Software Skills – Last year we built up a small amount of knowledge of CSS and HTML but this semester I want to expand and build on this understanding using Dreamweaver to code websites and learn more about design for web. My approach to design is very practical and hands-on; being able to code and develop design for online use will help to connect the different areas of my practice together. This year I aim to produce a lot more type driven design to contrast with my illustrative style, therefore in terms of software skills I aspire to become accustom to Fontographer and my overall knowledge of the technical side typography. Other software skills I wish to pursue are within after-effects working closely with motion graphics, using sound and time within design is something that really excites me and I want to incorporate more motion into my work this semester. Professional Practice- I have chosen briefs working mainly in music publishing and Promotion, Fashion branding and Identity, retail branding and Interiors and branding and Identity. Contrasting to my practice in first year these are all areas I am yet work with within but I feel that on completion of my degree I would be happy going down. Working ethically is going to be a big part of my practice this semester, I want to be a designer who is concerned about production methods, message and audience not a designer who works for status and profit. Practical Skills- Continuing the development of my hand rendered and digital illustration skills through constant practice of drawing is something I want to pursue. This will be an extension from the skills I developed in this area during 1st and second year but looking at a more definitive style and approach to illustration working with pointillism. My briefs tailor the skills I want to convey, Laser Cutting & screen print are two very strong personal interests that I feel I need to capitalize on as I don’t feel I have used the facilities we have on offer to their full potential, These are both skills that direct the sort of practice I want to go into, being a creative designer who can work in a multitude of mediums. Finally, My motivation within design is working with a perceived outcome to an arrangement of space, exhibitions and installations are areas of design I’m yet to explore but feel very enthusiastic towards. They offer a chance to work experimentally with 3d materials and media, this is where I feel my skills lie within graphic design.

Title and Brief Summary – include a short rationale for each brief identifying why you chose it, what was the focus of the brief and how long you spent on it. BRIEF 1

Escobar Cantina was a collaborative research brief with Sadie Thompson looking at shop and restaurant interiors, going onto producing and mounting an installation for Mexican Restaurant, Escobar. I chose to do this brief with Sadie because it gave us a chance to work outside of University on a brief for a Live client, It also gave us a the opportunity to work with unusual materials on a range of scales, thinking about how design and communication works with space. The focus of the brief was working with a section of their restaurant to produce informative plaques and artwork relating to Mexico and their celebration of The Day Of The Dead. Overall this brief took the whole duration of the Module, the production and mounting of our work was underestimated in our time plan and ended up stretching right up to the deadline.

BRIEF 2

F & J Groundwork’s was a live brief for a small business from my hometown in Cheshire. It gave me the chance to work with a real-life industrial company to produce their identity and Branding. I thought this brief would give me the chance to improve my typography, layout and knowledge of logo whilst also considering product range and distribution. I spent around 3 weeks altogether on this brief, spending the majority of time on the concept building and production of my outcomes.

BRIEF 3

The Universes Pupils was a Personal brief, pursuing an idea I’ve had brewing for a long time. I wanted to design and produce a range for a new clothing company that focuses on having ethical modes of production and an open-minded outlook on life. I wanted to create a clothing company that explored different cuts of t-shirts, to spread a message through design/networking & was unique to current trends. I chose this brief because it gave me a chance to develop my screen-printing skills, design for garments/fashion, branding & identity and concept building. This was one of my biggest briefs and gave me a chance to produce a lot of different deliverables. I spent the full duration of the module on the brief as many factors slowed down my modes of production.

BRIEF 4

Between the lines was a typographic competition brief exploring the phrase ‘Between The Lines’ to produce an a3 poster for an Indian Type Day. I chose this brief to develop my Typography skills and digital production skills, However I don’t feel I completed this brief to its full potential down to under-estimating how much other briefs would overlap. I spent around a week on this brief.

Additional Comments Overall, I really enjoyed this module and feel I’ve produced a varied range of products I would feel happy to put in my portfolio, I’ve gathered an extensive range of knowledge working with laser cutting wood and leather, skills I really wanted to invest my time in whilst having the facilities to use. I feel I dedicated my time to the production of my work rather than the documentation, and feel my time management let me down, in relation to completing the 4th brief to its full potential. I found I was focusing far too much on pushing my briefs to my ideal mental image of the final outcome rather than producing mock-ups and moving on to the next.
