The Quitting Smoker The target market are tobacco users who know and understand the benefit and need to quit but struggle to either begin quiting, follow through with the process or remain tobacco free after finally quiting, reverting back to old habits. With a vast amount of different quiting services and products available in todays market, it is valuable identifying why the process of reducing and eventually removing tobacco dependence from a smoker’s life is such a difficult task in today’s society. The process of removing tobacco dependence from a smokers life should be a individual, supportive and intuitive process that results in a clearer and more viable option for smokers to take back control in their lives.

background John is long term ‘pack a day’ smoker and started in his late ‘teens’. Now in his early 30s, John is feeling the burden of his years of tobacco use. Once a very active young man, John finds his endurance lacking which limits his ability to take part in many physical activities which hurts him socially with his friends and family. Seen as a role model by his young seven year old boy, John feels as though he is letting his son down as he cannot fully partake in many of his son’s activities. He has minimized the areas he smokes due to second hand smoke but he wants to better his families environment. Professionally John becomes stressed, working on a largely commission based contract, he is under pressure to sell in order to provide for his family. Smoking is a relaxant, however, when meeting prospects he has noticed obvious reactions to his heavy smoke odor. Often to kind to comment, customers first impressions are poor and John’s boss has urged a change.

The Issue Current market offerings are in the business of delivering attractive devices that ensure the customer continues to buy their product and most importantly... REMAINs SMOKING By providing interesting features such as music or phone call capabilities, current E-Cigarette manufacturers can manipulate users to believe that e-smoking is not only attractive but also perceived as an evaluator for smoking recovery.

mk-1 The concept behind the e-Quit removable casing is to embrace multiple companion items that are evident within the smoking experience and bring them into a single, manageable unit. Previously e-cigarettes lack perceived quality with no centralised location or ‘home’, the e-Quit recovery e-cigarette utalises a removable docking case that finally provides such a function. The casing insures that the e-Quit is an essentially part of the quitting smokers lifestyle until the point of which they fully recover from tobacco dependence. The product also delivers the convenience of privacy as a user can simply disconnect the exterior casing and store during inappropriate situations such as meetings or perhaps family settings. End use is also important for the e-Quit appcessory where the years following quitting can be the most difficult. The casing provides in a practical sense for the smartphone as protection but it can act as friendly reminder to the user of the undertaken process and somewhat of a token for what has been achieved.

Fit for purpose Incorporating a docking station within the exterior casing presented a challenge for both the form and ergonomics of the product system. By reducing the e-Quit from a well known king size form to the regular 84mm cigarette model, the entire feel and function of the product changes for the better. A lower profile and sleeker design essentially results in reduced impact for the functions of the smartphone and the eventual interaction with the e-Quit app

Or both? Human centered design embodies the method of designing with an emphasis for people rather than the product. Considering system ergonomics and human psychology, I considered the form design in relation to the needs and ability of the user.

right
Approximately 90% of the world’s population are right handed as we are a co-operative species. From a manufacturing stand point it would be uneconomical to provide two options for such an issue. Rear mounting the dock was a credible option but upon investigation, I confirmed that users desire and interact more positively towards a sleek but slightly wider object compared to a narrow and ‘fat’ design

Distant Similarities The aesthetic and feel for the e-Quit cigarette module plays the most crucial role in the genuine experience of the tobacco smoker. A particular aesthetic had to be established within the product that users could connect, engage and enjoy in the closest artificial representation to traditional tobacco cigarettes. It is a fine balance between desirable features and insuring that users don’t obsesses on the e-Quit as the device will eventually become redundant. Subtle blue elements pay tribute to the smokefree image that e-Quit possesses and the anodised ring is true to what would be the orange filter.

The e-Quit quitting companion is the next generation of quitting aid for tobacco users. The unique four part product system provides to the needs of the user both in their quest to beat their tobacco dependence but also in the practical sense. The second generation packet-case combination bred further unique market characteristics of the first devise that considers the entire smoking experience from the touch and feel of the cigarette to where it is stored. e-Quit is the answer for the morally correct e-cigarette with genuine intentions to actually aid in addiction recovery. The user is truly at the heart of the concept both in the users interface and products which correlates to the unique e-Quit product experience. Slim fitting and complementary of the aesthetic and functions of today’s smartphone, e-Quit is the companion item that can be there when you need and discrete when it is necessary. The proof of concept is true and opportunistic for today’s market. e-Quit takes the next step to provide for tobacco users like never before. The theory is set, understandable, justifiable and quantifiable, e-Quit can potentially revolutionise quitting aid products for the better.

project review
The blentek assignment was an exciting and very beneficial industry project. Working with an industry leader was both a great motivator as well as an experience of what a real world brief may provide. With the pressure from our client in the early stages of the mission, this focused my learning and attention early which has resulted in a truly immerseful design experience personally and a product that reflect the users needs. The e-Quit concept is something I am proud to present, the research and considerations of an unfamiliar user group was an engaging experience that I would gladly undertake again. The most vital aspect of the concept is the user interface and unique experience that will potentially deliver an alternative aid in the lives of tobacco users who are attempting to beat their dependence. Many aspects which particularly include the casing mechanism could be refined but the aim and intentions of the e-Quit product are resolved and justifiable. I experienced an enhanced ability to remain interested and motivated towards a market that was completely unfamiliar and developing what is essentially a health product was self gratifying. Helping others to improve their lives is a great opportunity that is always worthwhile to explore.
