Summer Camp 2020 Name:
Welcome Aboard! This summer, you are coming to camp from a world that seems to be going crazy; with powerful elements at work that are rocking the foundations of our society. There is a powerful pandemic that shouts with the voice of fear. There are powerful politics that are pressuring for dramatic changes in the freedom that our society enjoys. There is powerful economic pressure that comes as our ďŹ nancial well being is challenged. The whole world shouts and demands that you bow down to its command for change and control. Let me remind you, there is a God that is in control; and His voice and His plan and purpose for your life is more powerful than anything this crazy world can throw at you. My prayer and heart’s desire is that your week here at Camp Anderson would be the most spiritually powerful experience of your life. The Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ is more powerful than anything and my heartfelt desire is to see you overcome this world through the Power of God!

The Power of Sin: Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gi of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Power: Who doesn't wish they had more power? It seems like everyone is in trying to get more power. We want to be the most popular, the best looking, most athle c, most talented, smartest, richest, or funniest person in the room. All of these things; looks, influence, strength, smarts, and money promise to give us an advantage, to give us power. So many things and people in this world promise to make us more powerful but are they really what we should be chasing? Should we want to have power over other people? Is that really all there is to the world; chasing things to make us be er than the next person? What happens when our lives are so filled with trying to get these things that we start hur ng the people around us in order to get them? Are we truly powerful if we pull down and put down others on our way to the top? What happens when our greed and desires become more important that the people around us? We are sinners: When we turn our backs on what we know is good and right, we SIN. The word literally means “to miss the mark”. We know what is be er, what is helpful and good, but we don't do it. We get distracted and do something else instead. We do what makes us feel good, what we want to do and don't worry about who it will hurt or how. The tricky part is that many things in our lives are good but can lead to sin. Being strong is not bad but using that strength to bully someone so that you feel even stronger is. Being smart isn't bad but using your smarts to put people down is. Whenever we sin, it damages something. It damages our own lives, others' lives or our rela onship with God. When we break or damage something, we should get punished. The bible tells us in our passage today that our punishment for sin should be death.
22
The Good News: Our punishment should be death, but it doesn't have to be. We talked about power earlier and how so many things promise to give it to us. Sin and death seem pre y powerful, but there is a power that is greater. This week we are going to look at the only TRUE POWER in the universe. The power of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That word “Gospel” means “good news”. The good news of Jesus Christ is that His power has won and we share in His victory. Paul celebrates this in 1 Corinthians 15:57: “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” He died on the cross for our sins and was raised from the dead on the third day. He beat the power of sin and death and offers us everlas ng life. Our theme verse for this week tells us that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God to salva on for all who believe. This means that the only thing powerful enough to save or rescue you from sin and death is Jesus and what He did for you.
Have you ever wanted to be powerful?
What ways would you use your power to help people?
What does it mean to you to know that the Jesus is more powerful than death?
Prayer: Lord, save me from the power of sin and death and fill me with the true power of your salva on. Amen 23
The Power of Repentance: Acts 3:19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blo ed out, so that mes of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. The first steps are easy: “Repentance”…what is it and how do we do it? Well, luckily for us the first few steps to repentance are really easy. Step 1; mess up. That's it. We all mess up and make mistakes so we should all be a pro so far. Step 2; know that you messed up and want to do something about it. This one is a bit harder, but we've all done this as well. The cool thing is that God helps us with this part. He gives us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is very powerful and one of the things that it does is it lets us know when we make mistakes. That sense of, “oh no, I did something wrong and I need to fix it” comes from the Holy Spirit. When it moves you, you might want to say, “I'm sorry.” Good news, that's step 3, saying you're sorry. So there you have it, the first three steps are things that we have done and will probably do this week, but we are not finished. Not Enough: The apology alone is not enough. Trust has been broken, a rela onship is damaged and “I'm sorry” just doesn't cut it. Now, what if we stopped doing whatever it is that hurts someone? What if we le that behavior or those words behind and moved forward doing all that we could to never hurt anyone the same way again? That would be step 4, REPENTANCE. A lot of people seem to think that saying I'm sorry is enough to repair damaged rela onships but it isn't. We have to turn away from the things that we have done or we will be stuck saying I'm sorry all the me and never making things be er. Just saying “I'm sorry” but not making a change is like gently pumping the breaks when you are driving toward a cliff at 100 miles per hour. You might slow down a bit, but you are s ll going to fall off the cliff. Stop, turn around, and live.
24
The Power: When we do things that damage our rela onship with God it is a type of sin. He is your creator and you are His crea on. He has a plan for your life and a rela onship with Him is the biggest part of that plan. We can hurt that rela onship by turning our back on God, ignoring Him and by hur ng others. Jesus tells us that the two greatest things we can do are to love God and love others. Ma hew 22:37-39 shows us: “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” When we are hateful to others, it's like we are hateful to God. We have to do something to fix that. We repent. We admit that we've done wrong, we honestly want to fix it, we say we are sorry but without the fourth step, it means nothing. We turn away from our sin and ask God to help us not do it and He provides the power of the Holy Spirit again here to help us in that fight. That's what turns an apology, into repentance.
How do you feel when people say I'm sorry but they don't seem to mean it?
Do you normally do more than just apologize to others to make things be er?
What are some things that you need help turning away from?
Prayer: Lord, give me the strength and power to turn away from my sin and turn toward you. Amen 25
The Power of Forgiveness: Luke 23: 34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” Okay, what now? Yesterday we learned all about repentance and why we need to do it but is it just about fixing the rela onship? We did something wrong and we are going to stop, now everything is all good…right? Well, there's more to it than that. You see, when we do wrong, we owe something to the person we have wronged. More than just the apology and a heart that doesn't want to hurt them again. We may have made them feel sadness and we owe them the happiness that we took. We might make someone feel discouraged our excluded and we owe them the belonging that we took from them. Unfortunately, we can never repay these debts. We can jump through hoop a er hoop trying to fix everything, but the damage has been done and it leaves deep scars. Our rela onship with God works like this too. When we sin and do the things that are wrong in God's eyes, we owe a debt. That debt is too big for us to cover no ma er how many nice or good things we do a erward so eventually, someone should come to collect. If you owe someone money, someday they are going to come asking for what you owe. He didn't come to collect; He came to pay. God did something amazing to erase our debt. When God sent His son to die on the cross, he took on all our debts and erased them. He didn't come to collect what we owed or punish us for the crime, he came to pay all our debts. That's what forgiveness is, acknowledging that something is owed and choosing not to collect it or punish the person who owes it. The power of love: When Jesus died, our sin died with him. Believing in that sacrifice means that we will be raised like Jesus was. Romans 6:5 tells us that: “For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrec on,” We

are not perfect. There has only ever been one perfect person, Jesus. Everyone else, no ma er how amazing, kind, smart, strong, brave, or beau ful they are, has sinned. We all owe a debt, but He owed no one. He had done no wrong and He traded His innocence for our guilt. Now we are innocent in the eyes of God, the debt has been paid and we are forgiven. We owed God an enormous debt and He used His power to make it disappear. God did this because He loves you. The love that God has for you is so powerful that he was willing to give the life of His only true son to save the lives of all of His adopted sons and daughters. Never underes mate the power of God's love for you. He forgave you, regardless of anything and everything that you have done. Not only are you forgiven but you can forgive too. When we forgive others, we par cipate in the power of the gospel. The truth of God's forgiveness toward us is evident when we forgive others...and ourselves.
How do you normally react when people do you wrong?
What makes forgiving people hard to do?
How does it mean to you to know that you are forgiven and loved by God?
Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the wrong that I have done. Give me the power to forgive myself and others. Amen 27
The Power of Witness: Romans 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Plug it in! Imagine having a ba ery that could power an en re city and never run out of energy, what would you do with it? You would plug it in! That's what God wants us to do with the Gospel and what you have learned this week. There is power, unlimited power that is literally at your finger ps and most of us ignore it. The actual life, death, burial and resurrec on of Jesus is the single most powerful story that we can believe and share. When we believe it, we plug it in to our own lives and it powers us on to salva on. Salva on means that we are saved from the penal es of sin and death, something be er is wai ng for us a er we die. Imagine leaving that amazing ba ery in its package on a shelf and never using it. Imagine knowing that the most powerful power source ever is with your reach and you chose to ignore it. Don't ignore it, take hold of it today and plug it in to your life! Believe in the Gospel! Tell everybody: We have full access to this power in the form of the Bible and it even tells us to share it. God is not selfish, and we shouldn't be either. We are not supposed to hear this good news and just keep it for ourselves. Jesus told his disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel. In Ma hew 28: 19-20 Jesus says; “Go therefore and make disciples of all the na ons, bap zing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. God wants you to be His witness. To take a stand and tell the world about Him! You don't have to be a preacher to tell someone what Jesus did for them. You don't have to be the smartest person to share good news, we do it all the me. When something good happens, we tell people. So…something good

happened! Jesus died for you and everyone you know. You don't have to spend eternity separated from God in hell. You are free from the debt you owed. Everlas ng life is yours if you only believe, tell somebody, TELL EVERYBODY! The most powerful first step: This morning at the river, people will be ge ng bap zed. Bap sm is a special ceremony with water showing that our sin has been washed away and we are now clean in the eyes of God because we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. He has saved us from sin and death and we make Him the master or Lord of our life. It is our first chance to give a powerful witness to the only TRUE POWER. It is what we do when we hear the Gospel and believe it. It is the first and most powerful step we take a er giving our lives to God. Today some of you will stand in front of hundreds of your peers and all of heaven and say that you believe in the power of the cross, the power of repentance, the power of forgiveness, the power of love, the power of the Holy Spirit, the power of the Gospel, and the true power of God to save you from sin and death and that now that power is yours through believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth as a beloved child of God!
What are the ways that you can share the Gospel?
What are some things you can do to live more like Jesus?
Who in your life needs to hear the Good News?
Prayer: Lord, help me to be a powerful witness for you and share the message of your Gospel. Amen 29
