“The Power of Community Connections” Reflecting on the Black Chamber’s existence, one can’t help but realize the impactful significance of productive relationship building. Visibility, Credibility, and Loyalty have been the strong sturdy sides of the Black Chambers triangle for the past 31 years.

We will also offer and partner with other community corporations and service organizations to host events that will foster and strengthen specific resources.

s g n i t e e r G

Thanks to our relationship building and outreach efforts we have played a major role in the county and across this great nation to provide access to information for growth opportunities, development, advocacy and education. We have made a conscious effort to help increase our partner’s return on investment. Let me reiterate our tireless efforts to work with our community partners and leaders to encourage our underserved youths to stay in school, obtain a college degree and receive mentoring to find a valuable place in this competitive technologically demanding workforce, as they are our future.

Our coordinated leadership with several key veterans service organizations has increased awareness and opportunities for military personnel, veterans and military families and their children. We will continue this role to ensure our veterans will know where their outreach resources are located for housing, employment, health, education and legal support.

Congratulations to our “Power of Community Connection” awardees and honorees which epitomize the impactful significance of productive relationship building in our communities.

Lest We Forget, this year we remember the 50th Anniversary of those 84 US Marines and US Air Force servicemen that lost their lives aboard a plane bound for Vietnam and crashed into Loma Ridge in Orange County’s Worst Air Disaster.

Thank you for your continued support and participation. Thank you also for your encouragement.

We will strive to maintain our vigilance and dedication to enhance, improve and grow your business with Access to Information! Keep smiling— Bobby McDonald

WHEELCHAIRS FOR VETERANS The Knights of Columbus national veterans’ wheel chair program was launched in 2003. In 2012 the Orange County leadership of the Knights of Columbus embarked on a more concentrated support of this program. Sixteen of the forty six councils raised $100,000 in a four month time period. This allowed the purchase of 733 wheel chairs. Immediate distribution drives occurred as follows; 422 distributed at the VA Medical Center in Long Beach, CA, 131 at the VA Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA. area, and 180 distributed to Orange County deserving veterans via the support of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and American Legion organizations. The Orange County program was so successful, the Knights of Columbus California State Leadership adopted the program. The statewide goal for fiscal year 20152016 is a $1,000,000 with a statewide goal of 60,000 to our veterans. Plans call for these events to take place at VA Medical Centers throughout the state with additional emphasis to the “Wounded Warrior” and “Honor Flights” programs.

Work together

Win together AT&T Global Supplier Diversity Our goal is simple: To connect certified diverse businesses with opportunities to provide products and services to AT&T around the world.

Our commitment to Supplier Diversity is real. We’ve set one of the most aggressive supplier diversity goals — to reach 21.5% of our total spend with certified diverse businesses by 2012. In 2011, we spent $12 billion with diverse suppliers, surpassing our corporate goal one year ahead of schedule. We continue to look for diverse suppliers in key strategic areas like mobile Internet, wireless, U-verse, and cloud services. Today more than ever, we’re accelerating the pace of innovation — which means working with diverse, innovative suppliers who can take us to the next level.

Supplier Diversity Programs for Success The key to our Supplier Diversity success are the programs we offer that provide corporate support, build leadership and promote innovation. AT&T Business Development Building Programs: Throughout the year, we produce business-development forums and workshops that reach hundreds of diverse businesses across the U.S. These sessions help diverse businesses refine their businesses plans and implement solutions that help them successfully compete for and win contacts in a global supply chain.

AT&T Executive Scholarship Program: Providing affordable access to high-quality education and training for small and medium diversity business leaders — awarding graduate-level executive-management scholarships to diversity business leaders, assisting diverse suppliers in their pursuit of operational excellence. AT&T Operation Hand Salute: A national groundbreaking education and mentoring program designed to help service-disabled veteran-owned businesses improve operations and win corporate contracts by providing cutting-edge training and mentoring to a select group of qualified CEOs.

Leading the Way Creating opportunities for diverse businesses is key to our success. For more than four decades, we’ve been a leader in developing relationships with Minority Business Enterprises, Women Business Enterprises and Service Disabled Veteran Business Enterprises to compete for corporate contracts and succeed in every sector of our business.

Chuck Moore Mr. Moore is owner of Moore Educational Services. This company has been engaged during the past 16 years in hosting youth conferences and providing college advising services. He is a proud member of the Council of African American Parents. Chuck heads up the Orange County Education Fund program for the past 6 years, the program provide guidance, educational programs, scholarships to youth of Orange County and Southern California, in order to achieve academic and vocational successes. The Black Chamber of Commerce of Orange County will support these educational programs and scholarships. A new emphasis was undertaken three years ago with priorities shifted to support successful community programs as opposed to creating new activities within the Black Chamber structure. BRIDGES, the program designed to increase college graduation rates among African American students on Orange County college and university campuses continues to serve as the foundation program for BCEF. However, BCEF has worked as a partner with the Council of African American Parents (CAAP) to publicize and support programs sponsored by this twenty-one year old college preparation organization that serves students and families from Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. BCEF supports the (CAAP) Legacy Roundtable Accelerated Summer Mathematics Academy designed to increase the number of African American males completing Calculus before high school graduation. Members of the Chamber are sending increased numbers of scholars to CAAP’s Junior/Senior Workshop where scholars and parents receive intensive guidance covering all aspects of the college selection, admissions and enrollment procedures. These pipeline programs feed college level scholars into the BRIDGES (Book Reimbursement Incentive, Guidance and Educational Support) program where business partners serve as mentors, internship site supervisors, and general supporters of college students striving to complete baccalaureate and advanced degrees from Orange County college campuses. The BRIDGES program was designed to aid African American students in efforts to find Orange County employment, entrepreneurial opportunities and local mentors. This year we celebrate the return of Dr. AC Campbell, a BRIDGES scholar in 2001 and 2002. Dr. Campbell was accepted as a BRIDGES scholar while completing his master’s degree in Sociology at CSU Fullerton. BCEF is proud to announce that Dr. Campbell who attended and graduated from Purdue University with his doctoral degree in Sociology will begin his tenure process as a faculty member at Santa Ana College in fall 2013. His accomplishments and return to Orange County embody the goals of BCEF and promote continued efforts of this type throughout our service area.

BRICKS and BRIDGES are very strong symbols but more importantly, the two acronyms embody the essence of the BCOC Motto, “Visibility, Credibility, and Loyalty.” BCOC attempts through two important programs to establish direct interaction, effective skills modeling, and foster growth in social abilities among program participants. Providing visible evidence, persistent interaction to instill confidence or credibility, and unselfishly reaching out to students to increase self-awareness and mastery of basic business etiquette and skills, BCOC members shape their own destiny by supporting future leaders who will reciprocate in kind when their turns arrive.

Orange County Fair Board—Ashleigh Aitken

The OC Fair & Event Center’s (OCFEC) Board of Directors has voted to commit $1 million to fund the new Heroes Hall exhibit on the 150-acre property to honor the sacrifices of U.S. veterans and pay homage to the property’s past Army airbase roots. The OC Fair Board also voted to establish Heroes Hall Veterans Foundation, a nonprofit foundation to raise money for the exhibit’s operations. “As the former home of the Santa Ana Army Air Base, the OC Fair & Event Center is a natural fit for the Heroes Hall Exhibit. We are honored to host this historic exhibit and look forward to seeing it come to fruition in the coming months,” said OCFEC CEO Kathy Kramer. The new, permanent, year-round exhibit will be designed and built by OCFEC and will encompass more than 12,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor exhibit space. An architect is currently developing the design renderings before bids for construction are collected. The former “Memorial Gardens” building will be relocated and repurposed as part of the overall exhibit. The project is slated for completion by Veteran’s Day (Nov. 11) in 2016. “The OC Fair & Event Center Board is proud to support this endeavor.

Heroes Hall will not only honor the military roots of the Fairgrounds and the veterans that served on its soil, but also add an educational component that complements Centennial Farm and our agricultural history,” said OCFEC Board Chair Ashleigh Aitken. The OCFEC property is part of what once was the Santa Ana Army Air Base, a 1,300-plus-acre training facility used during World War II. Orange Coast College, Vanguard University, Costa Mesa High School, Davis Elementary School, Tewinkle Park and several commercial and residential areas are also on land that was once part of the air base. The initial $1 million contribution is just part of the funding necessary for the new year-round exhibit. Generous members of the community who would like to contribute to Heroes Hall are encouraged to email heroeshall@ocfair.com. Funds collected will go towards maintenance and staffing of the yearround exhibit. For periodic updates on the Heroes Hall exhibit, visit ocfair.com/heroeshall. The OC Fair & Event Center is located off the 405 and 55 freeways at 88 Fair Drive in Costa Mesa. Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.
