PORTAFOLIO Catalina Afanador
WRITTEN EVIDENCE Through the year I have taken a particular interest in hands. Looking at my grandfather's hands all crooked and dysfunctional because of his arthritis. Seeing my mothers hands while knitting. I wondered how do our hands express ourselves (emotions, feelings, actions...)? It is a weird sounding question but I couldn’t narrow it down. What do we do with our hands when we are talking. How do our hands react when we are scared. What do we do when we are bored. During this process I started looking into different artists and different methods of painting. Starting with graphite and charcoal while drawing a stretch. Continuing with ink and coffee wondering how hands are able to contort and do all kinds of motions and actions. I even looked into more literal ways of expression like sign language. After several works like this I realized that there was no need to draw hands when they also manipulate the objects around us. Our hands are able to show how we are feeling, to manipulate all kinds of material, to become better at painting or drawing, and that is what I show with my work.
