Studio Art Portfolio Iris Wu 2012-2013

About Me My name is Wu Han-Ni (吳涵妮 A.K.A. Iris Wu). As you can know from my last name, I’m Asian. I’ve only lived about 4 years and a half in Taiwan, my home country, since I’ve been following my father throughout all my life to Latin America. Colombia is the last country that I’ve been in Latin America. I’ve always been interested in art and music, but since I can’t read sheet music, I chose Studio Art AP. Since small I’ve loved to make hand crafts, people always get impressed by what I make, so I thought that I could do good in AP Art. But actually it’s not as easy as it seems… (Q△Q)|||

BREADTH

About My WORK In this part of my portfolio, I explored different `techniques in 3D, in which most of them have crochet in them since I love to crochet. There are several mobiles in this part because I saw those that Alexander Calder had made and I liked that kind of sculptures, so I decided to also try to create them. The reason I wanted to try this kind of sculptures is that I liked how mobiles are different from other types of sculptures. The viewers can interact with the works since the mobiles have movements and they are hanged. When I created the mobiles, I also used a lot of wires in them, so I also made some works with wire. There are two types of wires that I decided to use in my works: wires with color that are thicker than others and colored wires that are more flexible. For me, the metal wires that don’t have colors are connectors for objects and the colored ones are the objects, that’s why I never used the colored ones to connect two objects, nor I never used the metal ones to be the “protagonists” of a work.

CONCENTRATION

About My INVESTIGATION In this part of my portfolio, I used “pattern” as the central idea. At the beginning, I didn’t have a clear definition of that word, so I simply thought that it could be anything that creates a shape or something similar that is repetitive. I liked how some things in our daily life has rhythm and variation, not boring repetitions nor mess, but a nice combination of rhythm and variation that creates a pattern. Moreover, I thought about the idea of a parterre of flowers which could be applied to what I previously said. For example, all the flowers in a parterre of flowers have a green stem and maybe some small leaves, but the petals and the colors are different. What occurs makes this pattern not repetitive, but not a mess either, that‘s why people call it beautiful and appreciate it. During the process, I observed my surroundings and drew what I thought what would work well on my works. Most of my drawings from the concentration are lines that I found, for example, most spirals that appears on my mobiles represents the spiral that I found on plants while they were growing. I also wanted to create rhythm and variation on what I observed, like there are spirals in most of the mobiles, but not all the spirals are the same, there are spirals with different ends. When I was creating the mobiles, I didn't have to worry only about what it contained, I also had to balance it so that its components didn't fall or become unbalanced. This would also demonstrate my idea of rhythm variation.
