In a repressive future strict government control has made it illegal to display and engage in all forms of emotion. This totalitarian government laid down this rule to create a robotic like society as a means of control and order. Despite almost all hope being lost, a guerrilla uprising formed thanks to a secret construction of a hidden sanctuary named ‘Catharsis’. Designed as a source of fantasy and escape from government control, ‘Catharsis’ aims to stimulate and engage every known human emotion, therefore providing a place to covertly relieve any repressed emotions you are feeling. The concept more or less represents a mammoth vertical amusement park, but aims to evoke a much wider range of emotions. The design is characterised by the vertical stacking of theatre stages in which each emotionally evoking ride or attraction is placed within, but the individual emotions are not confined to their particular stage. ‘Catharsis’ lives underneath an abandoned factory, hiding in seemingly plain sight from government control.

MIXED RESIDENTIAL
A mixed use residential building in the heart of Fitzroy that includes four student rooms, one young family apartment, one elderly apartment and a small boutique art gallery. The design process looked at taking your typical Fitzroy terrace house and manipulating it in a quirky way. stretching, pulling and squishing proportions as well as adding contour and movement introduced a new style of architecture to the area, while still fitting in with its surroundings. Features include separate entrances for the residence and the gallery, a recycled brick filled gabion wall as a homage to Fitzroys use of brick, this acted as a sculptural piece and aided privacy. bike racks, industrial bucket lights and a private roof terrace all added to the laid back, hipster nature of Fitzroy.
SAN REMO FORESHORE
San Remo, an opportunistic settlement on the Bass Coast has long been a place of shifting ambitions. Currently home to a permanent population of some 1100 residents, the area is defined by a coastal narrative of feast and famine with the population swelling many times over in peak periods, returning to a small town abruptly as the holiday periods end. This narrative of drive in and drive out holidaying is common to many parts of the Australian coast, these areas becoming de facto backyards for the nation.

Within this context, options for Marine Parade (San Remo’s primary shopping strip) are explored. With competing interests from existing commercial operations, council politics and resident concerns, this project acknowledges the present patterns of usage while projecting a possible future where Marine Parade becomes the stage for events both on the foreshore and San Remo at large. The streetscape is reoriented and extended towards the foreshore, and a hard edge erodes to create platforms as well as pockets for activities and events. This project has been developed through consultation and presentation to Vicroads, Department of Sustainability and Environment, San Remo Foreshore Committee and Bass Coast Council. Ideas from this scheme are currently under discussion for inclusion in to San Remo’s future planning.

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
‘The Tree Bridge’ takes its inspiration from nature and the city of Melbourne. the form of the bridge is derived from the metaphorical planting of two Gothic inspired trees within the Yarra River that act as the primary structure for the bridge deck. The bridge has multiple levels including a raised garden walk on the first floor, a skate park on the south tree and an observation platform on the north tree. The bridge uses suspension as the main method of support. The bridge deck has been designed as thin as possible utilizing a gridded i-beam structure hidden under the windscreen. the choice of materials reflect a natural earthy feel through use of corten steel, spotted gum timber and plywood as well as perforated steel mesh that allows ivy and other plant species to grow up the trees. With the change of seasons the appearance and experience of the bridge will vary depending on the time of year you choose to explore.
F A T D U C K S T. K I L D A The design of the St.Kilda Fat Duck is based around a progressive dining experience. Externally the building takes its inspiration from large wall pile retaining walls, it expresses a maritime influence with the main feature being three large tubes embedded on the beach road facade, suggesting something obscure happening inside. The eroded salted steel clad structure is surrounded by sand dunes that have been reformed and pushed up the sides of the building, creating a continuation of the dunes. A range of experiential spaces internally provide a shell for people to eat, laugh, enjoy. The separate dining rooms provide opportunities for different courses to be enjoyed in as they move throughout the restaurant. apart from its atmospheric effects, it captures the views of the bay through large panoramic windows, outdoor dining as well as an elevated bar within the dunes.

RE STAURA NT
Extensive research on the sense of taste revealed certain cultural beliefs that the earth’s four main elements, EARTH, WIND, FIRE and WATER, provoke a reaction by the body to the basic tastes. Based on this mythology, a sensory journey was devised, including six separate pavilions enhancing the astringent, sour, pungent, salty, sweet and bitter tastes respectively. Enclosed in a form which was informed by the contours of the landscape and utilising an array of natural materials, the design preserves the natural beauty of the site. The nexus of the Fat Duck design was to translate the unique, theatrical and extraordinary ingredients that Heston showcases in his meals into an exploratory and fascinating experience.

PRIMARY SCHOOL & AGED CARE
‘SPUD’ is a project that brings together two vastly different generations in the form of the elderly and primary school children. This project originated from the rhizome and potato root system as a design tool. The building incorporates spatial organizational qualities from the potato as its primary function.
Located behind the famous Arts Centre in Melbourne, Australia, the building contains both a primary school and elderly residences. Externally, individual smaller buildings are embedded into one overall form to create a series of interesting breakaway spaces that contrasts the major form. The overall form came from a singular potato, which has been manipulated to fit the triangular site. Large circular holes are punctured throughout the buildings exterior provide moments of transparency and density. The angles and direction of these apertures have a purpose of capturing a view to the city, the arts centre as well as storing and diffusing the light inside. The overall building is broken down into two separate forms, with the bottom brick form focused on more open space, containing a foyer, reception and library. There are various entrances on the ground floor that place you within the core, the students and elderly then feed up into their various spaces within as interactions between the two users starts to occur. The building sits at six levels, which caters for 40-60 elderly people and up to 200+ students based on required minimum classroom sizes. Each of the six levels are completely unique to themselves, as they contain a variety of shared and privates spaces, ranging from the kids library on ground floor to a shared theatre and performance space on the fifth floor. Classrooms, residences, a small chip and putt golf course, gymnasium and a basketball court are also found within the building to create the overall experience. All of the spaces internally wrap around the exterior of the building with the circulation stem running through the centre of the building. All floors and spaces contain a variety of colours, textures and light qualities that encourage playfulness and exploration for both the students and elderly to learn, enjoy and relax.
