Arroyo Wine Bar, located at 220 E Colorado Ave is Telluride Blues & Brews Festival’s Official Art Gallery for the weekend! We encourage you to stop by, have a beverage, light bites and enjoy artwork from festival photographers Barry Brecheisen & Dino Perrucci, and artists Scramble Campbell, David Craig and past festival painting artists. Some artwork will be for sale. Open daily Sun-Wed 4 p.m. to close/Thu-Sat noon - close.

The artist Born and raised in Bogalusa, Louisiana, David Craig began his creative career in the music industry. Having written and published hundreds of songs, he worked for 15 years at Louisiana’s legendary Studio in the Country with some of the greats in the business like Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson and Johnny Winter. His creative expression turned to the visual arts as well nearly 20 years ago. He prefers painting and while anything can be fodder for his canvas, Craig finds portraits to be the most fascinating. His recent work is a series of blues singers including Tab Benoit, Billie Holiday, Etta James and Professor Longhair. “Fess” was the signature image created for the 2012 Bogalusa Blues & Heritage Festival’s tribute to the late, great, Louisiana music legend. Craig was also honored when his portrait of “Gatemouth” Brown, a personal gift to his manager, was chosen to grace the cover of what turned out to be “Gatemouth’s” last CD, “Timeless”. THE Comedians

Andrew

Orvedahl >

Andrew Orvedahl is a standup comedian, writer and actor. As a stand-up he has spent the last ten years playing clubs, colleges and theaters from coast to coast. In 2013 he released his debut comedy album Hit the Dick Lights

with great reviews. As a writer, Andrew has written a feature screenplay, several sitcom episodes, numerous comedy sketches, 6 novels, and a children’s book. In 2013 he co-created, cowrote, and co-starred in the top-rated Amazon Studios’ pilot Those Who Can’t. He is also a writer and performer in the popular web series, The Grawlix, based off the live show he co-created. As an actor Andrew has starred in Those Who Can’t as dopey gym teacher Andy Fairbell, as well as a dim-witted version of himself in The Grawlix. He has also acted in several commercials, where he was fortunate enough to not play an idiot.

Elliot Woolsey is a larger than life stand-up comedian from Denver, Colorado. Towering at an unnatural 6’5, and weighing in at barely-healthy 250 pounds, Elliot’s high-energy, and commanding stage presence has made him a rising star in the Denver comedy scene. Elliot won the 2012 Comedy Works new faces contest, and has become a regular at the club, opening for amazing comedians T.J. Miller, Todd Glass, David Allen Grier, and many more.

If you haven’t heard yet, the Denver comedy scene is blowing up and comedian Troy Walker is one of the most talented local rising stars. Troy Walker has quickly become one of Denver’s most sought-after comedians, a designation he’d dismiss with a modest scoff, despite its accuracy. A regular at Comedy Works, Walker has won the Comedy Works “New Faces” contest twice. Walker has had the pleasure of opening for some of the most prominent comedians in the country and also serves as a fine ambassador of Denver comedy at national and local comedy festivals including The Aspen Rooftop Comedy Festival, The Great American Comedy Festival, The Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, Portland’s Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and The Telluride Comedy Festival.

THE MUSIC

Ryan McGarvey

New Mexico’s hottest blues guitarist will be making his second appearance at the festival - on our new second stage. Ryan McGarvey’s life is devoted to the six strings of his road worn Strat. He has a fluidity to his playing that hearkens back to Eric Clapton – one of his idols - at the

height of his powers and he transcends technical ability with passion infused in every note. McGarvey is sporting a huge feather in his cap these days as

the recipient of Guitar Player magazine’s 2013 Reader’s Poll nod for Best New Talent. In fact, he is no stranger to the magazine’s pages, having been featured numerous times. Those of us fortunate enough to live in this corner of the world are well aware of McGarvey’s massive talent. He’s been racking up awards for both his playing and his original songs in his native New Mexico for years now and in 2010; he was personally invited by Eric Clapton to perform at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago. His rock-solid band propels him through barn burner sets he fills with his own material and tasty covers. This is an artist on his ascendency. You will not want to miss him. Mountain Village Sunset Plaza, THURSDAY, 5:00 PM, FREE Blues Stage, FRIDAY, 5:30 PM

Roosevelt Collier Artist at large, The Lee Boys’ front man has struck off on his own, but he’s rarely alone.

Roosevelt Collier positively smokes on the pedal steel and his vocals bring to mind the steamy exhortations of James Brown. He is one sought-after cat and it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say he has collaborated with nearly everyone. 20 | tellurideblues.com

Bayou Gypsys

Keep an eye and an ear out for Roosevelt’s signature pedal steel sound as he will be sitting in with a variety of folks through-

out the weekend. Do not miss his Bayou Gypsys set as he leads this all star band on a Jimi Hendrix experience. Blues Stage, SATURDAY, 3:00 PM

THE MUSIC

Markus James >

If you think the blues begins and ends in the Mississippi Delta, you’re only partly right. Blues music and its earliest practitioners are rooted in Africa. When the slavers brought their sorrowful ships full of stolen African people to the Americas, with them came their music. Those African traditions became the basis for today’s blues, jazz and rock. Markus James has traveled to West Africa many times, tracing the music’s lineage to the cradle of its birth. He went as a scholar and musician and an advocate for the musicians he discovered. There, he has not only honed his own craft, but has helped develop worldwide exposure for African musicians such as Solo Sidibe, Hamma Sankare, Hassi Sare,

Mohead

His rootsy, Delta blues-rock tunes go down like good bourbon on a summer night.

Massamba Diop and Wassonrai, a group featuring Mamadou Sidibe and Amadou Camara. James’ music is rock that incorporates traditional African instruments and rhythms. With every note, he melts borders and minds. Blues Stage, SATURDAY, 6:00 PM

The Record Company If you like your blues raw and rocking, rooted in the past and alive in the present, The Record Company will make your festival.

This Los Angeles-based trio has all the fire and gut-wrenching soul of the blues greats they love – John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf – with the decidedly modern, crunchy rock muscle of neo-blues bands like The Black Keys. They smoke. The talented trio is comprised of guitarist Chris Vos, 22 | tellurideblues.com

Alex Stiff on bass, and drummer Marc Cazorla. Harmonica, piano, and lap and pedal steel guitars all serve to round out their old-is-new sound. When blues legends like B.B. King and Buddy Guy ask you to open for them, you know you’ve arrived. The Elks Lodge, FRIDAY, 10:00 PM

His slide work dances like moths around a porch light and his original songs take the listener to a beloved, homey place. Mohead’s music is deeply rooted in Mississippi where he makes his home. It is imbued with the inevitable influences of the blues masters who seem to sprout from the Delta as if planted by some unseen hand. A hand that loves the blues. Mohead is a homeboy, rich in Southern charm with a natural storytelling gift. He plays with passion and respect for the masters who came before him, carrying the torch with pride and purpose. Daily trips. Lifetime memories.

Kipori Woods

The future of the blues is alive and well with New Orleans’ Kipori Woods.

Under the tutelage of Ellis Marsalis, and before that, Woods’ grandfather, the great Big Easy bass player “Luscious” Lloyd Lambert, Woods started out playing with some of New Orleans’ top gospel groups. It wasn’t long before he struck out on his own, fronting his own funk

group. When his grandfather passed, Woods got serious about the blues, a calling that he couldn’t ignore. He looked to B.B. King, Albert King and Walter “Wolfman” Washington for musical direction and along the way forged his own sound at the feet of those masters. His knowing voice is that of an old soul and is a font of emotion and wisdom. “Baby Wolf,” as he is known, puts on an energetic show. His guitar chops are well-honed with steady touring and he’s shared the stage with greats such as the Neville Brothers and Kermit Ruffins. He straight up has a good time on stage for the best of reasons – he wants you to have a good time, too.

Keeping you warm on cool festival nights

Some of the best inspirations for countless musicians can be found in the old man’s record collection.

Musical alchemist, Patrick Sweany, did just that as a kid and fell in love with the 1960s-era classic country, folk, and blues albums he found in his father’s vinyl stash. Lots of blues. He taught himself finger picking by playing along with Leadbelly and Lightnin’ Hopkins recordings. As he grew up and honed his chops, he infused his earliest influences with garage punk and the soul sounds

Her talent takes up where her daddy’s leaves off – her voice is an exquisite instrument and she is an accomplished drummer and mandolin player. She is a founding member of the roots band, Ollabelle, which has three acclaimed albums to its credit. Along with her late father, she brought to fruition the Midnight Rambles at the family farm in upstate New York, a tradition of loose and inspired jam sessions that continue to this day. Helm’s own folk-rock repertoire is soulful and deep and will feature her original songs as well as folk and rock songs that are steeped in her heart. THE MUSIC

The Slide Brothers >

Pedal steel guitar fans, The Slide Brothers’ set will be your version of heaven. Indeed, the “Sacred Steel” style of pedal steel work

THE MUSIC originated in the House of God church, where the energetic playing of the style’s practitioners whipped congregations closer and closer to the Holy Spirit. Sacred Steel was never heard outside the church until more recently, when blues fans

The Robert Cray Band

got wind of the potent music that was making these churches rock with righteousness. The Slide Brothers, presented by Sacred Steel’s most famous player, Robert Randolph, are four deeply talented players that Randolph believed the world outside the church’s walls needed to hear. Calvin Cooke, Chuck Campbell, Darick Campbell and Aubrey Ghent bring power, finesse and fire to the music and are each considered living legends. They base their music on the deep traditions of Sacred Steel and add rock and blues to a sound that will, indeed, deliver you to heaven right here on earth. Zach Deputy

Are you ready to get loopy with Zach Deputy’s “island-infused, drum ‘n’ bass, gospel-Ninja-soul?”

This dynamic performer draws on his Puerto Rican-Irish-AfricaBritish-French-Cherokee background to create music that is 32 | tellurideblues.com

mind-blowingly diverse and refreshing. He started looping during his live shows years ago when his bass player didn’t show up for

a gig and he hasn’t looked back. His sets are multi-layered, rhythmic wonders – no two sets are alike. As Deputy says, “I never want to get bored with myself.” This charismatic performer tours incessantly and when he’s not on stage, he can be found pursuing his other passion, disc golf. He’s even a spokesman for the sport, serving as Celebrity Ambassador for Innova Discs and hosts the Zach Deputy Disc Jam, a music and disc golf festival in Florida, now in its second year. We like how this guy rolls. No chance of boredom here! MAIN STAGE, FRIDAY, 4:20 Pm Fly Me to the Moon Saloon, SATURDAY, 10:00 Pm

Three is a magic number and we’re welcoming the incomparable Robert Cray to Telluride for his third appearance at the festival.

There are few guitarists whose styles are as instantly recognizable as Robert Cray’s. Whether he’s playing straight-up houserocking blues or pouring a heartfelt ballad into your ears, those sinuous, silky smooth, soul-piercing Stratocaster licks say, “This is Cray.” The young man who credits The Beatles for inspiring him to first start playing guitar, has absorbed dozens of rock and blues influences ranging from Hendrix to B.B. King to Albert Collins and Buddy Guy. His warm, smooth vocals are a nod to Bobby Blue Bland and other soul crooners, but what comes through the speakers is a sound all his own. Cray’s topnotch new band features drummer Les Falconer, longtime bassist Richard Cousins and the return of Dover Weinberg on keys. The Robert Cray Band’s new record, In My Soul, is produced by Steve Jordan. As the title implies, the tracks speak to what can be expected, which include the soulful, bluesy sounds of the band’s heroes Sam Cooke and Ray Charles. Jordan, Cray says, helped keep the group cohesive and called him, “the 5th member.” Performers of Cray’s caliber are few and far between. We couldn’t be more pleased to have him on our 2014 line-up. Charles Bradley

7 days a week 5:30 to 9:30pm

Charles Bradley’s voice is power and beauty. His voice tells a thousand stories in a single note. It is a voice that has paid its dues. It exemplifies soul. It’s hard to believe Bradley’s bruising journey from the mean streets to the stage, but it speaks to the grit and resilience of the man who bounced from job to job, state by state until he was discovered and signed to Daptone Records (home of the Menahan Street Band and Sharon Jones

when he was living in exile. When he sings in his native language, Tamashek, he tells of the political strife and suffering of his people, marginalized tribes who roam the Saharan desert. He knows the sorrow of political oppression and has endured the loss of fellow musicians executed because they are musicians. Governments

fear the Tuareg guitar and have tried to snuff its voice. The music is hypnotic and powered by blues and rock. Bombino has risen to international acclaim on the strengths of his blistering guitar work and magical phrasing. When The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach heard Bombino’s album Agadez, he invited the young musician and his band to Nashville where 2013’s Nomad was recorded. Now, like respected African musicians Ali and Vieux Farke Touré and the Tuareg band, Tinarwen, before him, Bombino has realized success beyond his wildest dreams. And while he tours the world, playing his mesmerizing style of guitar, he brings with him the sound of the desert, and a message of hope.

Black Joe Lewis

When Black Joe Lewis sings “Come To My Party,” what would you do? Yeah, we’re not missing this party!

We hosted Mr. Lewis a couple festivals back when he was a bright, new star, zooming his way to the heights. The Austin-based bluesrock-soul guitarist and bandleader honed his chops in the tough, Austin blues-rock garage band scene and then showed ‘em who’s

boss during his hometown’s epic music industry gathering, South By Southwest in 2009. His music is a howling blend of James Brown-fueled funk and fire, with a dash of Jimi Hendrix’ searing rock and enough horns to make things steamy. The band

Dumpstaphunk

A decade evolved from their debut at 2003’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Dumpstaphunk offers fans an unforgettable live experience steeped in the Big Easy tradition of a good time. 36 | tellurideblues.com

formerly known as The Honeybears is Bill Stevenson Eduardo Torres, Jason Frey, Joe Woullard and Derek Phelps and they pack a punch both live and on the group’s latest record, Electric Slave. The title is Lewis’ lament on modern technology and how people have become enslaved to their cell phones and other devices. The songs are gritty, primal and urgent. Women, luck and house-rocking parties are central themes. It’s guaranteed you will not be texting during this set, unless you’re telling someone to get their butt off their tarp and come to the front of the stage to dance. MAIN STAGE, Saturday, 3:00 Pm The Sheridan Opera House, Saturday, 10:00 Pm

From annual performances at New Orleans’ Jazz Fest – “The colossal low end and filthy grooves they threw down from the Gentilly Stage must have set a Jazz Fest record for baddest bass jams ever.” (Bass Player Magazine, 2012) – to music rooms and festivals across the nation. Dumpstaphunk continues to spread an unmistakably New Orleans groove with hardhitting performances that dare listeners not to move. “We always keep the spontaneity going, that’s something I love about this band,” says Ivan. “We can funk it out with the best of them, but we also like to showcase how all sorts of music can come together and push the boundaries of what funk music is.” MAIN STAGE, Saturday, 4:30 Pm Blues stage, Saturday, 10:00 Pm

Shakey Graves

Shakey Graves is the performance name of Alejandro RoseGarcia, a one-man act that defies categorization. He mesmerizes audiences with his seductive, spare hobo folk songs; songs that tell stories and transport the listener to a world populated by unseen

segments of society. An Austin native, RoseGarcia’s musical direction was kindled after seeing the one-man band Bob Log III, whose performance style was dynamic and unpredictable. Rose-Garcia loved how Log, as a solo performer, was

able to capture and hold his audience’s attention and so started experimenting with a fresh approach to his own music. Success did not come easily for the young musician and he stumbled plenty of times. He credits the humbling experience of tough gigs for helping him bear down, practice religiously and work hard to develop the arresting style his fans enjoy today. He plays with a homemade suitcase kick drum, and his finger picking style will make you think of Leo Kottke or Townes Van Zandt. Watch him play and be forever changed. Anders Osborne

He plays guitar like a man possessed, and that’s because he is. Since Anders Osborne landed in New Orleans after a youthful, global odyssey from his native Sweden, he has channeled the musty city’s music. 38 | tellurideblues.com

He dove in, feet first, and has never forsaken it no matter his struggles. His guitar playing is fierce and tender, and knows light and dark within a single phrase. The reason Anders Osborne plays at this festival so often is because we – you, me, everyone who works at, attends, gets wet and cold and sunburned and collectively makes this festival happen – we need Anders. This Everyman of the polyethnic delta that is the Crescent City seems to always strike the perfect chord. His music speaks to us directly, with passion and commitment. The Lee Boys

What better act could there be on a Sunday morning to shake out your cobwebs, make you throw your hands in the air and experience the joy of music, than The Lee Boys?

Purveyors of the sound known as sacred steel, The Lee Boys from Miami (three Lee brothers and their nephews) were each raised in the House of God church where both spirituality and musical expression are nurtured. Sacred steel is a jump-up-and-dance

Dragondeer

style of gospel music that is propelled by the blues, electrified by rock and roll, smothered in R&B and lyrically charged with the religious faith of its practitioners. It is energetic and infectious and whether in a festival setting or in church, celebration and dancing

The Meter Men >

It’s not a stretch to suggest that New Orleans’ quintessential funk band, The Meters, pretty much invented funk music as we know it.

It’s also not the fevered imagination of music lovers to argue that funk gave birth to the hiphop movement. After all, The 40 | tellurideblues.com

Meters were sampled left and right by the likes of Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Run DMC and other rap stars of the 1980s and

‘90s. And given the number of artists The Meters have backed (Dr. John, Lee Dorsey, Paul McCartney), one could say they’re one of the most influential bands out of The Big Easy when it comes to funk. Throw in their seminal funk hits like “Cissy Strut,” and a slew of other booty-shaking jams from a long and fruitful career and we can just go ahead and declare them The Funkiest Band on the planet. The Meter Men features three quarters of the original Meters lineup: drummer Zigaboo Modeliste, guitarist Leo Nocentelli and bassist George Porter Jr., in addition to Galactic’s Rich Vogel on keys. Ladies and gentlemen, this is funk. MAIN STAGE, Saturday, 6:00 Pm

Lee Fields & The Expressions

Lee Fields is living proof that many things in life get better with age. The soul man’s 40-plus-year career started in 1969 with the release of his first record. He has toured the world on the strength of his incredibly appealing, sexy-soulful voice and performed with soul standard-bearers like Kool and The Gang and O.V. Wright. He could call it a day and have a respectable career to look back with pride, but there is far too much artistry and passion left in the man to settle down just yet. Arguably, he is creating his best work right now. The venerable soul man – like his hero, James Brown – is still takin’ it to the bridge. Since releasing records beginning in 2009 for Truth and Soul Records – The Expressions are the label’s house band – Fields’ already strong

presence on the music scene enjoyed a huge resurgence and earned him a whole new generation of fans. The group’s 2009 release, My World, was called “throwback done right,” by one contemporary music magazine. With its supreme vocal workouts reminiscent of the Delphonics and the Stylistics, and funk firmly in the grooves, the record declared in no uncertain terms that authentic soul music is here to stay. His newest record, Emma Jean, is another glittering jewel in Lee Fields’ crown. Get you some. MAIN STAGE, Sunday, 12:20 Pm

Denver’s Dragondeer left it all on the stage during an epic Battle of the Bands contest in August and walked away with the top prize - a slot on the newly added Blues Stage for Telluride Blues & Brews. The contest was a benefit for Firefly Autism and Autism Speaks, two non-profit organizations dedicated to funding autism research and support for those with autism and their families. The contest was hosted by Listen Up Denver!, Park House and the good folks who put on this festival. Dragondeer emerged victorious with their distinctive heavy blues and psychedelic rock onslaught, besting a slew of top Rocky Mountain region bands for the coveted festival appearance. They’ve been attracting notice from music lovers in Colorado and beyond with inspired improvisations and their far-out take on the blues. Performances at the respected music industry gathering South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, and other notable festivals this year have helped to launch this brand new band on a trajectory to the top. THE MUSIC

Buddy Guy If you’re seeing spots, it must be Buddy Guy on stage! Many consider Guy the living link between the electric blues and the bluesbased rock and roll as we know it today. He’s considered a primary influence of such greats as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page and after he played guitar with his teeth, so did Jimi Hendrix. Vaughan went so far as to say, “Without Buddy Guy, there would be no Stevie Ray Vaughan.” The man’s impact on blues and rock is seismic. It’s hard to believe one early critic thought of his playing as “just noise.” Guy’s playing is dynamic and unpredictable. He slows and speeds up within a song to convey drama and emotion, going from loud to soft, tender to fierce in a moment. He pioneered the use of feedback and distortion and his shows are theatrical and exciting. No two are the same. He’s won numerous Grammy awards for his recorded work and has played in the White House, even getting President Barack Obama to sing a bar or two of “Sweet Home Chicago.” He has as many awards for his contribution to music as there are spots on his guitar. He’s the real deal, the one, the only, Mr. Buddy Guy.

THE MUSIC

Peter Frampton the SUPERSTAR Peter Frampton was just 26 years old when his live album Frampton Comes Alive made him a superstar in 1976. It was a mixed blessing for the former Humble Pie co-founder and guitarist. The album’s multiple-platinum sales brought him well-deserved recognition but it also served to shift focus away from his brilliant guitar playing and toward his blonde good looks. But being a pop star was not what he had in mind when he picked up his first guitar. Mind you, he’s proud of that huge moment in his long and satisfying music career. On the 35th anniversary of the record, he toured in its honor, playing the record track-for-track to both new fans and a generation that knows every Talk-boxed note. Last year, he took the Frampton Guitar Circus on the road, picking up guest stars like Mike McCready, Sonny Landreth, Steve Cropper and B.B. King along the way. He’s a guitarist’s guitarist and he will blow you away with his playing. His collaborations are legend – he appears on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and Harry Nilsson’s Son of Schmilsson – and his career post-Comes Alive is meaty. He’s toured with Ringo Starr and David Bowie, as well as played host to some of the world’s most notable guitar players. We couldn’t be prouder to have Peter Frampton join us for our 21st year. the funk

The Mothership has landed. Bootyrockin’, super-freaky, soul-funk tricksters, Parliament Funkadelic, with their space commander and Supreme Executive of Funk, George Clinton will be bringing their glittery mayhem to Telluride.

George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic It all started as a doo-wop group in New Jersey in the 1950s and has since followed singer-songwriter and bandleader Clinton’s very funky vision into today’s big band, big assshaking sound. Clinton’s music has kept dance floors filled since the 1970s, and he helped launch not only the disco movement, but also helped give birth to rap, with many of its earliest stars name-checking Clinton and sampling his beats. Clinton is truly an innovator and alchemist, blending R&B and soul sensibilities with some of his more trippedout influences like Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa. The sound was beloved and awarded Clinton with numerous hit singles and three platinum albums in the 70s. Parliament Funkadelic is a traveling family of musicians whose stage shows feature not only tightly seductive musicianship, but an eyeball feast of outrageous costumes. Feather boas, crazy hairstyles, fishnet stockings and multistory platform shoes stoke the visual representation of some of the deepest, nastiest, funkiest grooves ever laid down by a band. Get your freak on Saturday night in Town Park. Break out your funkiest costume and get down with that Cosmic Slop. MAIN STAGE, Saturday, 7:40 Pm

THE MUSIC

The original

The 1980s was a decade of neon colors, shiny pop, big hair and bigger shoulder pads. The music of that era ranged from snarling punk and synthed-up dance fodder to yowling hair bands and moody groups from Great Britain. Of all the sounds that tumbled from that raucous, excessive decade, the most original and attentiongrabbing group was a quirky trio from Milwaukee that dared to be different.

Violent Femmes The Violent Femmes, influenced by the disparate sounds of Velvet Underground, Sun Ra, Johnny Cash and Devo, offered the world a style of music that was at once obvious and obtuse, incredibly danceable and lyrically layered with innuendo and wry humor. Clearly not the same old youknow-what. The Femmes got a big break when Chrisse Hynde of The Pretenders invited them to open a gig for them, after catching the band busking outside the venue. Their first album, Violent Femmes, has sold millions of copies, reaching platinum status eight years after its release. It was a simple, acoustic affair with understated percussion, and Gordon Gano’s urgent vocals spoke to young people seething with frustration and yearning to rebel. It was punk without the spit, pop without the shine. And a xylophone solo, too! Right out of the chutes, the record made the band a legend. The reunited Femmes will headline the festival Friday night. We are so gone, daddy gone! MAIN STAGE, FRIDAY, 7:40 Pm tellurideblues.com | 47
