Tasks: Producing final working drawings for projects and taking part in collaborative design processes for sound architectural design.

By studying architecture, I would say that I am always questioning why things appear as they do and why they do what they do. I believe this is quite a valuable trait, since it is always much more rewarding when one understands the criterias behind certain elements. I tend to think that architecture is a discipline that evolves with the individual, in that it is apparent that we all have different personalities before creating architecture, which serves as a conduit to portray what the individual need is that would ultimately serve a wider populace.

Tasks: Site visit measurements & drawing up of plans with the addition of rendered images.

By analyzing what exactly is needed by a community, it is easier to identify the key areas of concern that are prevalent within the area in question and to build a substantial depository that suggests ideas that could improve situations. This is exactly what architecture has done for me and how I analyze my surroundings, whether I am on vacation or on a research based field trip with a particular organisation.

The thesis investigation explores how architecture may have a role to play in the way Urban city spaces are shaped, taking into consideration contemporary prevalent issues that are experienced within specific urban settings. In this case, Madrid which is understood as a tale of two cities in most cases due to the inconsistency of the cities wealth and organization. With this in mind, the reason for investigating a region that was mostly populated by immigrants and an area that commemorates a piece of history turned into a cultural centre, seemed valid with the idea of trying to create an architecture that brings social cohesion to an area with the addition of economic significance.

Health and cleanliness of the city | According to the WHO in 2017, London and Madrid are experiencing high air pollution numbers of 63.35 and 65.91 respectively, in terms of the pollution index. Hence, rather poor air quality is expected with lows of 36.65 and 34.09 respectively.

01 Thesis project

A Civic Utopia | Regimenting Urban growth with Urban futures

The project is understood as a consolidation to the numerously transformed space of the Matadero in Madrid, as an urban intervention. The previous slaughter house turned cultural arts centre acts as a suitable site to incorporate past memories as an idea for nascent future urban architectures. The main idea stems from exploring the past architectural elements, in form of the Arab Hammam Bath spaces that were used for social interactions, despite social classes, age and sex for individuals. By addressing the polemic issue of social and economic cohesion in Madrid by integrating the lost elements of the Hammam Bath and re-introducing them back into an urban fabric that would essentially create a celebration of social interaction.

A Civic Spectaculum average inhabitant air intake in Madrid in 2017 | Air intake is relatively equal in both cities with an increasing amount of pollution per year, due to man made induced air pollution.

Gay Saunas 1934 | Budapest “city of spas”

The idea is to be explored through linking various processes within the design proposal that would improve the economic status of the area as well; such as air purification, algae-processing and aquaponic food production. With this in mind the idea has been explored by studying various ancient Roman bath arrangements that will create the basis of how the design proposal is formed, with the additional use of test models.

An ease of porosity and flow through the building is enhanced by the buildings linear arrangement with relation to the existing context of the Matadero and neighbouring buildings in Usera. The new intervention is placed near the old slaughterhouse and current cultural centre but always respects its volume and the void that must be around it in order to understand the whole complex with little to no distractions. 1844-1912 | Floating bath house in Amsterdam

1591 | First public bath house in Tokyo 212 | Baths of Caracalla, Rome

1837 | Floating riverbaths in Frankfurt

1850 | Turkish baths introduced in the UK

The site chosen is situated between the districts of Usera and La Chopera areas that seem to be areas detached from the main urban fabric, such as the Palace of Madrid that acted as the main archetype in shaping the city of Madrid.

The continuation of this idea of preserving the identity of the cultural space as a place of both civic inclusion and production is integral to the scheme and proves the revitalising potential that architecture has for urban spaces. 1911 | Amsterdam’s first public Bathhouse

T

he retrospective leisure spaces, in this case allude to the ephemeral existence of the Arab Hammam bath spaces, introduced in Spain in the 11th centuries, influenced by North African Heritage and Roman antiquities. By also investigating the water shortage in Madrid and how this can be used as a source of economic improvement led to the understanding that algae production acts as a catalyst in the production of oxygen levels and the production of algal oil; that tends to have a higher quantity yield than other forms of natural occurring biomass by-products, the thesis then intends to commemorate the idea that social cohesion and strategies used to improve the economic situation in an area can actually work within a symbiotic relationship to create a harmonious cycle.

Late 20th century | Exclusive luxury spa [emphasis on spa] 1928 | ThermenPalast: unrealised utopian project

Contemporary Baths

he project focuses on creating a hybrid archetype of building that takes into consideration the social cehesion and economic development in Madrid, by integrating programmes of a civic intention; in the form of retrospective spaces and subsequently spaces facilitating hygiene and food production, improving the economic situation within the area.

Loosely alluding to the Spectaculum [ a civic utopia] of 1765-1837, which is concerned with the embellishment of the city as a place of pleasure, and not just in the increase in the scale and range of its sites of social intercourse, but, in its newly ordered grace, as a spectacle and an architectural landscape of delight in its own right.

Besides the Matadero comes the heritage of the Madrilenian people that needs to be maintained in a way that the city can teach its history to future generations and visitors. As in a fairy tale that introduces you to a new world the proposal bridges the Rio Manzenares, which allows pedestrians to cross the river in a seemingly metaphorical yet fantastical frontier, with the bath spaces provided for leisure activities. The program is also shaped with maximum respect to the pre-existence of the slaughterhouse and is designed based on studying various forms of factory architecture that usually have forms repeated to infinity and in this case would be the portal framing element.

I

nfluenced by the works of BIG, OMA and Peter Zumthor the scheme takes shape by the implementation of a seamless community mile town hub, which included a music auditorium and residential area for the inhabitants of the area.
