TA K E O N E

Welcome from Christopher Byrne As the end of the year quickly approaches, we are looking forward to many upcoming events to keep all our Members and guests entertained. The past months have seen some great community events held at Yarraville Club including a Community Pitch Event. This was organised by the Seddon Community Bank where local community groups were selected to pitch their individual cause to a group of local business partners to donate funds in support of their causes. It was a fantastic community event with over 150 people attending. Read more about this on Page 10. This year, Anzac Day marked the 100th Year Anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli. Yarraville Club were honoured to support the Yarraville RSL Sub Branch by holding a Commemorative Service at the Club. It was a moving tribute to those gone before us and was attended by over 200 people. Yarraville Club are proud to offer their continued support to Community Clubs, including sporting groups, aged care facilities, local school fundraisers etc. This year we have provided club facilities for many community organisations as part of our community charter. One group in particular we assist U3A Footscray. U3A uses the club facilities each week at no charge to provide a work space to train over 50’s who are learning how to use computers and tablets. As well as providing the work space, we have also funded the cost of a trainer for this group for a 10 week period. The training was successful and rewarding for the group and has enabled them to become more comfortable with computers and tablets. The success of our Yarraville Laughs and Yarraville Live Shows continued in the second half of the year with sell out shows for various shows, particularly during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Our traditional members BBQ’s are on again this year with Grand Final Day and Melbourne Cup Day BBQ’s locked in. Pekish will provide great food on both these days. We are also happy that our School Holiday “Mad Monday” movie days are becoming very popular with the young families in the area. This is an indication that as a Community Club, we are moving into all aspects of entertainment for all age groups. See inside for more information on all upcoming events for the whole family during Spring/Summer 2015. I also wish to remind all Members that our Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday 22nd November 2015 at Yarraville Club from 11am. We encourage all Members to attend the AGM as it is a way for Members and the Board of Directors to come together and discuss the Club. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish to thank you all once again for your continued support as loyal members of Yarraville Club. Please enjoy this issue of our Lifestyle Magazine and feel free to submit your feedback to info@yarravilleclub.com.au. We welcome your feedback. Yours sincerely.

Our Christmas in July Gala evening was held on Saturday 25th July and what a fantastic night it was.

Yarraville Club

Gala EVENT

A big thank you to all who attended. On the night we offered our loyal customers an extra chance to win by holding spot draws. The night was full of laughs, excitement, and a bit of background music in the Members Lounge area by the young and extremely talented Jesse, who is now a regular in our Bistro music line-up. Our prizes comprised of 30 gift vouchers, supporting the local traders of Yarraville Village. Being so unique, it is important for us to keep the Yarraville Village bustling. Not to mention the $1000 cash and members draws: Apple I watch and trip to Hamilton Island. Special mention to Endota Day Spa Yarraville who also donated $100 on top of our already ordered vouchers, and also to Robert Oatley Wines who once again donated the Hamilton Island trip to our members. Thank you to all of our wonderful members that made the evening special and we are very much looking forward to the next one.

YARRAVILLE

The Returned Service League Yarraville Sub Branch held a Commemorative Service at Yarraville Club on Saturday April 18. Over 200 people turned up for this very special and moving service, starting with a March which assembled at the Yarraville Train Station at 10.00am and made their way to Yarraville Club. President, Mr Ted Page opened the service by welcoming all those present, followed by Hymns, Prayers and the Wreath Laying Ceremony. Refreshments were provided by Pekish and Yarraville Club after the Service, and all attendees had a chance to catch up and have a beer with their mates. Two Up was also organised in The Atrium by Kate Barron and this was also a huge success. All in all it was a fitting tribute to those gone before us and it was wonderful to see so many people making the effort to attend and be part of this 100 Year Anzac Commemorative Service.

March kicked into high gear with our Melbourne International Comedy Festival acts at Yarraville Club. First up was the hugely talented Heath Franklin’s “Chopper – Repeat Offender” show which drew a great crowd who were thoroughly entertained. “Chopper” certainly had everyone laughing from start to end.

The Doug Anthony All Stars returned for 4 amazing sell out shows exclusively at Yarraville Club. All the DAAS fans came back time and time again, (some all 4 nights!) “ The rapturous reception that greeted the Doug Anthony All Stars as they took to the stage of the Yarraville Club before an adoring 450-strong crowd made it deafeningly clear just how deeply they are still held in the affections of old-school comedy lovers” Jim Schembri, Herald Sun, March 28 2015 –

Another Yarraville Club favourite, Effie, returned to full house shows and as always there were many laughs and lots of love. Effie has been a great supporter of Yarraville Laughs since the beginning and her fans keep coming to see her, from near and far! Check out the picture of a very young Nathan on Effie’s “Chopper” with lap - and see them together now at her last show here at Rita & Amie Yarraville Club. Following on from her sell out shows during the Comedy Festival, Yarraville Laughs were very excited to have the extremely talented Em Rusciano with her “Motherload” show in May. Two shows sold out in record time and the crowd just could not get enough of Em. In June, one of the funniest and fastest-rising comedians in the country, Joel Creasey (supported by Tommy Dassalo & Harley Breen, plus guest MC Matthew Hardy), performed at Yarraville Club. The crowd were treated to a night of great laughs by this amazing young talent – we would love to have Joel back again.

Yarraville Live kept rocking starting with a David Bowie tribute performed by a huge array of talented musicians. Songs from Bowie’s Young Americans and Diamond Dogs albums were featured in this tribute show. Bowie fans were out in force enjoying the night and singing along to their favourite songs. Another tribute show that had the room dancing was the KISS Alive Tribute, once again performed by a team of extremely talented muso’s playing some great music which had the crowd dancing to all their favourite KISS songs. A spectacular celebration of the 40th Anniversary Neil Young “Tonight’s The Night” and other Neil Young Classics was performed by the amazing Nick Barker & The Studio Instrument Rentals. This show drew a fantastic crowd and showed just how much people in the West are embracing the talent of the musicians playing these shows and having a great night out. Photo Beat Magazine

Together with James Young and Matthew Hardy, Yarraville Club thank all our members and guests who have supported us by coming along to Yarraville Club to enjoy great laughs and great music and to be entertained by some of the country’s most talented comedians and musicians. We strive to continue to provide you with more great talent and more great shows out in the West for the remainder of the year.

let b a T A U3 ng Traini U3A is a University in the original sense of the word; a community of people devoted to learning, and its members are in their third age of active retirement. In March this year a group from U3A arranged to meet at the Yarraville Club to learn how to use a Tablet for basic computer knowledge of Facebook, paying bills on the internet, internet banking, Skype, emailing etc. Yarraville Club offered to bring in a trainer for a period of time until everyone felt comfortable with the basics of learning to use their tablet. Lauren Broomhall came in to assist and taught the group how to confidently navigate their way around these functions. As a Community Club, we are pleased to be able to offer this service to U3A as it brings the group together socially every week, and by providing a trainer, they are receiving the benefit of actually learning new and exciting challenges. We look forward to continuing our support of these community groups.

Our Morning Melodies continue to grow in popularity. Be sure to book with Rita if you would like to attend the next show.

Fundraising Events

Functions

Please show your support and help us to help volunteers and organisations as they work tirelessly to raise money for excellent causes.

Both the Yarraville Club and pekish provide support to sponsored clubs and groups, as well as assisting groups and organisations with fundraising efforts for a range of causes. Some of the events we have been thrilled to support this year have been; The Seddon Branch of the Bendigo Bank teamed up with local businesses to provide a ‘pledge fund’ prize pool chipping in $6000 to kick things off. Yarraville Club held the event on 21 April where 18 inner-west community groups were invited to pitch their cause. 9 local sponsors participated and opened their cheque books to make this event possible and give away $500.00 each to these deserving community groups It was a great night and it bought home what community means to all those who attended, participated and sponsored this event.

Events to come this year include – Fun and Funky Fundraiser for Madeline and Alannah Foundation Saturday August 29th Boogie Nights 70’s and 80’s Disco Dinner Party.

Positive feedback from William Kelly from Gateway following the success of the Food Relief Dinner held on June 12th 2015. "the evening was an outstanding success, far beyond our expectations. I would like to thank your team at the Yarraville Club for all the support and the gift donation and subsidy that was provided to Gateway. Funds Raised: $34,075” On Friday June 19th Bailey Flints’ family and friends gathered in great fundraising spirit to ‘Keep Bay In USA”. Bailey is following his American Football dreams. Raising a phenomenal $25,000 towards the cause, they are congratulated on their efforts, which both pekish and The Yarraville Club were pleased to support. Rotary Against Family Violence On Friday May 15, Rotary Williamstown hosted a dinner at the Yarraville Club for this moveable cause. Colleen Hewett attended launching her CD as featured in the Herald Sun, article by Andrew Rule on Sunday November 29th. Colleen herself has revealed she was a victim of domestic violence, and as Andrew reported,”This year she heard a song by Darwin singer-songwriter Tracey Bunn and said, “I have to record that”. The result is Let Me Breathe, a stirring song that speaks for every woman who has ever suffered at the hands of a man. Now the Rotary movement has adopted it for a push to free families of violence.” The event was a success and once again we raise our hats to our local hard working Rotarians for their tremendous community efforts.

Rotary Toy Exchange – Saturday December 5th As held in previous years, Yarraville Rotary coordinate a fabulous Toy Exchange, where locals donate children’s toys, games and books. These can be donated to Yarraville Rotary, or can also be exchanged by the children with a point value system. They select more age appropriate toys donated by others so everyone leaves smiling. The toy exchange includes family entertainment across the day. So keep it in mind when doing your next child’s bedroom or garage cleanout.

Australian National & Open Billiards Championship In June the Yarraville Club hosted the Australian National and Open Billiards Championships for the fourth consecutive year. The National championship was again won by Matthew Bolton from Western Australia, his 13th Australian Championship. In the final Matthew defeated former Australian champion and Yarraville club member David Collins. In the Open event, there was again a strong field with 8 International players from 5 different countries doing battle with the best from Australia. In a reverse of last year’s final, and in a very high quality match, 2013 World Champion Peter Gilchrist, representing Singapore, defeated Matthew Bolton. All players and officials were very complimentary of the playing conditions and facilities provided by the Yarraville Club, and trophy recipients all expressed their gratitude that club members give up access to the tables to host this important event.

Car Park Poles Removed We are very pleased to report that the poles in the car park have been removed. Our Chairman, John Papazisis mentioned at the last AGM that he would make sure these were removed this year. The promise was kept and here is the picture to prove it.

Lance Pannell Classic 2015 Yarraville Club once again hosted the Lance Pannell Classic. This year the Classic had 63 entries, and after winning 13 of 17 frames to get to the Grand Final, Adrian Ridley won his 2nd Lance Pannell Classic in 3 years defeating Kurt Dunham 4/2. Neil Alison was the referee for this great match that was over in a short time as Adrian was in a rush to get to Bendigo. Adrian was runner up to Ben Judge from W.A. in the City Of Melbourne snooker tournament last month and they both got wild cards to have a go at the professionals at the Australian Snooker Goldfields Open. Adrian is the first Aussie wild card to get to the 2nd round of the professional tournament. Well done to Adrian, Kurt and to all the players and referees that participated in this great tournament.
