WINTER 2018

Welcome from John Papazisis Dear Members, As winter is now upon us, there is no better way to enjoy the warmth and comfort of the Club’s sports lounge. This area has proved a huge success with Members and patrons alike. It is well equipped with comfortable lounge seating and has a huge audio sound system overhead with a linked TV system that gives a theatre screen experience. It has achieved capacity patronage on event days such as the AFL Grand Final, the Melbourne Cup and other great institutional sports events. The Yarraville Club was successful with its VCAT application regarding the outdoor alfresco area permit. The permit relates to building an outdoor area where members and patrons can dine and enjoy some beverages in a modern outdoor setting with shaded areas and non-shaded areas -enjoying the summer breeze and the warm rays of the sun.

There are restrictions imposed by council primarily relating to sound emission and trading hours. As we work through these conditions, we will roll out an implementation plan over the next 12 months as we consult with our engineers, architects and consultants to ensure we maximise the best use of the permit for the benefit of our Members. The outdoor alfresco is part of the Club’s master plan. Bar135 is now being re-purposed as an upmarket dining/function room. It has been used as a small function room for birthdays and other events with great success. It has the advantage of being very well fitted out with a beautiful state of the art bar, sound system, over hanging red Swarovski Crystal Chandelier, engaging wall paper and art work on the walls. It is an intimate room that has a very special ambience conducive to sophisticated dining and party experience. Make sure you visit or make enquiries to book this room. As part of our Community Benefit programme, we sponsored the Victoria Police Kokoda Trail held in the Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea. Our liaison officer with the program was Acting Commander Adrian Healy of Victoria Police. The aim of the project is to help disengaged local youths in Melbourne’s inner West to reconnect with the community. It aims to achieve this by helping youth at risk to decrease the incidence of youth involvement in crime and improve the relationships between youth, police and the local community. I am personally very proud of this initiative. Having attended a presentation and video screening of last year’s event and hearing first hand the experiences of local youth and the bonds they created with the police was very moving. I witnessed an admiration and respect in the room between the local youths and the police that was not possible without these community initiatives. Well done to the youths in attendance, a big shout out to Victoria Police for treating potential kids at risk as a community issue and having the courage and initiative to undertake such a huge programme with many hours of voluntary work. It is initiatives like these that make me proud to be the chairman of the Yarraville Club. I wish you a warm winter and look forward to seeing you around the club. Yours truly

John Papazisis Chairman Yarraville Club Inc.
