In The Area - High Force

RABY CASTLE

Approx. 20 miles from the Castle and also part of Lord Barnard’s Estate is High Force Waterfall. High Force is situated on the Upper Teesdale Raby Estate near Middletonin-Teesdale. After visiting Raby Castle why not take a drive up the dale to High Force and then stroll down the woodland walk that leads you to this spectacular sight. High Force is open all year, however can be closed during adverse weather, please telephone first.

Opening Times The Castle, Park & Gardens are open to visitors from Saturday 19th April to Wednesday 1st October 2014. At certain times of the year we open only 4 days per week, please see the table below for opening days and times:

Event Highlights 2014

The Castle is approx. 400 metres from the main car park up a natural incline. Those accompanying wheelchair users will need to be strong and able pushers.

The Castle – parts of the Castle ground floor are wheelchair accessible. There are sets of three and four steps to access the whole of the ground floor. There are 41 steps leading to the upstairs. There is a level access DVD viewing area on the ground floor. The use of mobile phones is not permitted inside the Castle. Information is available in large print. Assistance dogs are welcome.

Sunday 18th May Teesdale Athletics Club 5k Fun Run & 10k Race

The Gardens – are situated on a natural slope, paths are surfaced with gravel and most steps have handrails. Wheelchair users may need assistance from a strong and able pusher. Deer Park – roads within the deer park are surfaced with tarmac. The landscape is grassy and undulating, please wear sensible footwear.

Sunday 25th May Flower Power Plant Fair

Disabled Parking – designated parking areas for Blue Badge holders are outside the Castle entrance (during castle opening times only) and in the Coach Yard outside the Gift Shop and Tearooms.

Sunday 15th June Classic Vehicle Show

Accessible Toilets – are located near the Tearooms, baby changing facilities are in both accessible and ladies toilets in the Coach Yard. There are limited toilet facilities inside the Castle.

Friday 18th July Family Outdoor Theatre: George’s Marvellous Medicine

Tearooms & Gift Shop – level access to the Gift Shop & Tearooms is via the Gift Shop door.

Last admission to the Castle and grounds is at 4pm or 3.20pm on tour days. The Gift Shop & Tearoom are open from: 11am – 4.30pm (no hot food after 3pm, last orders 4.30pm).

HIGH FORCE

Dogs – must be kept on a short lead at all times and are not permitted in the walled gardens, play area or inside buildings. Assistance dogs only are permitted inside the Castle. Under 16’s – children must be accompanied by an adult at all times whilst on site at Raby. Please supervise children at all times, especially near the ponds, in the gardens and adventure playground.

Raby Castle is situated on the A688 West Auckland to Barnard Castle road, 8 miles North East of Barnard Castle. It can be easily reached from the A1(M) and A66.

Raby Castle Uncover history in the halls and chambers which house fabulous interiors, art collections and dramatic architecture. The Castle’s knowledgeable and friendly guides help bring history to life with guided tours on weekdays during May, June and September. Have the freedom to explore the castle at your own pace every Sunday, during School holidays & from mid-July until the end of August, when our guides will be in every room to provide information and answer questions.

The 18th Century Walled Gardens encompass five acres and are still graced with many of the original design features, including two magnificent yew hedges, an ornamental pond in the Central Garden, large herbaceous borders and fruit trees, including a fig tree in its own glass house, which was brought to Raby in 1786!

Relax on one of the many benches and enjoy the peace and serenity, or even pick raspberries in the early summer months.

The Castle

Deer Park 200 acres of fine Parkland surround Raby Castle, providing plenty of space for children to play or to get away from it all. Watch the herds of Red and Fallow deer and their young from afar, stroll around the two large ponds and spot other wildlife. Our welcome leaflet highlights walks which take in fabulous vistas of the Castle and surrounding countryside.

Discover a castle of contrasts: a dramatic medieval exterior hides the opulent family home of Lord Barnard, who still makes Raby his home today; and take a glimpse into the kitchens and quarters of the servants that once worked here.

A beautifully illustrated and comprehensive guidebook is available to purchase at the Castle entrance and gift shop. Children can enjoy free activity sheets available from the Castle entrance. There’s something for the whole family on a visit to Raby Castle.

Woodland Play Area

You can see a fine collection of horse drawn carriages in the 18th Century Coach House & Tack Room as well as the harnesses and trappings of the horses which once lived here.

The Tearooms are housed in the old stables where the stalls of the former horses have been converted into a unique and comfortable setting. The Tearooms pride themselves on their delicious selection of cakes, homemade scones, lunches and light snacks. Ice cream and children’s lunch boxes are also available.

The Woodland Adventure Play Area provides a safe and fun environment for children aged 6 and above, featuring an obstacle course that includes an army-style zip wire. Adults can sit back and take in the beautiful surroundings of Raby Park.

Adjoining the Tearooms is the Gift Shop offering a unique selection of gifts, souvenirs, accessories for your home and garden, as well as books, confectionery, preserves, chutneys, toys and pocket money items.

Park & Gardens Season Ticket With a Raby Park & Gardens season ticket you can visit as many times as you like during the summer open season. Benefits include unlimited admission to the Park and Gardens, Carriage Collection, Play Area, Gift Shop and Tearooms, one admission to the Castle and free admission to some events.
