MASSING STUDY

HIGH RISE SCHOOL

In order to create a Melbourne unique atmosphere in North Melbourne, a laneway system is created within the site. Three different plans were made to accommodate the needs. In plan 1, the green space is surrounded by the school, mixed use area and residential towers. In plan 2, the mixed use area and residential towers are located at two ends of the site and a green space is located at north of the site and facing the school. In plan 3, the green space is separated by the school into two linear park. The residential tower and mixed use area are located on both end of the site.

BRIEF MAKING The total area of the site is around 11,000 square meter. The site should be divided into 4 different functional areas, namely, mixed use area, residential area, park, school. Since the park and school is donated by the developer, the foot print of the school should not be over a quarter. The site should still be mixed use and residential dominant.

Since the school is facing a doubled population in the next decades, the new school should be able to accommodate at least 400 student. Therefore, there should be enough room for children to play around and study. Hence, the school should be classroom denominated and play denominated.

BRIEF MAKING

The pie chat on the right shows the detail allocation of different learning space within the school. Formal and informal learning spaces have 70% of overall learning space. Other learning spaces only have around 30%

CONCEPT

HIGH RISE SCHOOL

"No one has yet fully realized the wealth of sympathy, kindness and generosity hidden in the soul of a child. The effort of every true education should be to unlock that treasure." Emma Goldman, author

The idea of school is a key has inspired in this project. Children can unlock their futures in school. Library, espically, can provide means for the kids to explore their interestes. Students should not be only taught within the classroom, but also through the exploration in library, the nature. Unlike other schools, external circulation could help the children to experience the nature as well.

PRECEDENT

This is one of the precedent that used the idea of translucent glass as the facade of the school. It can not only provide light penetration, but also provide sense of privacy. Educational building: IMI, Kolkata - West Bengal, India - by Abin Design Studio 16

PRECEDENT

HIGH RISE SCHOOL

Bridge Academy: BDP - London, United Kingdom The precedent has inspired me about the definition of atrium. Traditionally, atrium is closed and within a building. However, in this building, the atrium has become an open space on the roof of the building, which brings more light into the building and provide an semi-public space for people to use.

STUDIO 27

According to the SunEarthTools, the sun angle between 12-3 pm is 65 degree. Between 12-2 pm is 46 degree. Between 12-1 pm is 23 degree. Since between 12-2 is the break out hours of the school. Therefore, there is the necessity of providing sufficient sunlight to the playground.

Aerogel is new material that used in the building. This material has a very high thermal value and structural stiffness. By using this material, it could provide more structural support for the building as most of the internal space within the building is column less.

Aerogel will be installed within the double-glazed window, since the aerogel can be either translucent or transparent, it could keep the design intention of the building.

STUDIO 27

PEDAGOGY Unlike the traditional classroom layout, which was horizontally spread out, I’m proposing a new way to arrange the classroom. Since we are doing vertical school, it would be possible for us to stack the classroom vertically. This method will not only allows the 21st century pedagogy, but also solve the problem of land shortage. For school, flexible space is a place where teachers can easily switch their teaching location according to the content they are teaching. In these two types of learning units, teachers can easily switch their teaching environment simply moving to different level within the unit. The typical learning unit for year 3-6 are three level high with a half-level mezzanine. The typical learning unit for foundation to year 2 has two level with a half-level mezzanine.

Group Learning Space: These drawings on the left illustrated different furniture settings for group activities. All of them try to create a private space for student to study, but also try to keep them open. The lowest drawings was a table with multiple sittings so that it may be able to provide both large size group work and small size group work.
