Inspirations

Main Inspirations Manta Ray Attraction, Envelopment through depth of repetition T-Park - Hong Kong Physical Shape of the Roof

3

Main Component

4

In exploring repetition, this component was used as the main unit throughout the entire construction process.

Main Component

My main objectives were to figure out how to use this component in a variety of ways to create varieties of spaces and surfaces.

Backbone Structure (Grid)

Gesture Model 1

Gesture Model focused on capturing the shape of the Manta Ray

5

Gesture Model 2

Gesture Model exploring strengths of the grid

6

Iteration 1

This First iteration tests a direction in which the bays can initially expand, creating voids and imaginable surfaces

7

Iteration 1 (Improved)

8

Iteration 1 (Improved)

9

An attempt to improve on the previous design and provide more depth and surface area through spreading bays in two different directions

Iteration 2

10

After reexamining the essence of the Manta, a new approach was taken to create tubes and tunnels for air to be drawn in as well as to attract the viewer to the depths of the interior

Iteration 2

11

A new goal arose, how to transform these tunnels to preserve continuity and fluidity. Creating a relationship amongst the layers using the skin.

Iteration 2 (Skin)

12

Final Iteration

13

Final Iteration removes any units that did not connect to more than one bay. All units were then interconnected using at least two different sections, reducing the amount of total components used while overall enhancing strength, stability and flow of air.

Site: Haight and Stanyan

Mapping Analysis

In analyzing the area, I took strong notice in the main attractions of the area. Where did people frequent? Where did they stop? It became more and more apparent as I noticed this intersection was an end of a journey. This is where people turned around. Haight itself was the main goal unless someone had already decided on entering the park.

17

Programming

My main focus was on the idea of interaction and transition through spaces. I believed the addition of a second studio was beneficial to the overall growth as an educational community center, promotion of both visual and interactive arts. In laying out the various programs, I looked for a way to connect them all together. I found the idea in their linear capabilities and a tunnel as a physical link.

18

Tunnel Exploration

A tunnel with a negative connotation exists past the lake. My problem was how can I get the idea past that this was a transitional area, meant as a threshold for the greater Golden Gate Park. There became a need to push a positive experience onto the idea of a tunnel. “The Light at the end of the tunnel, a saying, a goal. What if a new tunnel was constructed with this idea constantly repeated? A tunnel was the main prominent feature, but with beams of light constantly slicing into the structure, it allows the user to constantly seek out the next beam of light within the tunnel.

19

Tunnel Diagram

The tunnel is created with varying experiences, the beginning is much more filtered with more light coming through to welcome the user. As they traverse deeper, it becomes a bit darker, but with a stronger experience as they near the end.

20

Skin Detail

The tunnel became the overall connecting structure for the rest of the program. Instead of only acting like a structure to walk through, it expanded to that of a connecting skin surrounding the main buildings. It keeps the user enticed in a similar experience with the fluctuations of the light and shadow at every step.
