I appreciated the stories you told me as we’ve met during my travels around South Carolina; how Jumping the Broom magazine helped you find the best reception site, bridal dress and tuxedo store, or insurance company. I appreciate all of the laughter we’ve shared about articles that have touched your life. So, it is difficult to tell you that this may be the last printed issue of Jumping the Broom. This magazine was created to help the small business owner. It was designed to give the business owner an opportunity to advertise his/her business at a reasonable rate. Without your support, there will not be another issue printed. If you want to see this small business thrive then, send your advertisement in before the next deadline in September along with your payment for the next issue. All of the ad rates and deadline information is located inside each issue of the magazine. We have to help each other. Share this information! If you are a business owner and you’ve been blessed by placing an ad in this magazine then tell another business owner about it! Pass on this information to as many business owners in South Carolina, so that we can continue this mission of publishing a magazine that is here to HELP you. Your business will be blessed for doing that. We will continue with our bridal show every October with your support. We hope to have more than 60 vendors and hundreds of brides at the show. Come support this event and meet some of the best wedding vendors in the state! Thank you again for your support. Anita Brewer Publisher/Founder

Sure, green weddings are all the rage, but the key is to make your ceremony much more than a trendy buzzword. It’s easy enough to find recycled wedding invitations and serve organic cuisine, but you’ll need to go the extra mile to make your wedding stand apart from the trite bandwagon green weddings. Here are some tips to get you started:

THINGS TO CONSIDER
Simplify – the overarching theme should be simplification. There are eco-friendly versions of most wedding products, but the best option is to forego these items altogether. Reuse wherever possible – and save on all types of resources, including cash! Weigh the Expenses – with that being said, some items you just can’t live without; usually the natural, organic, or green version is more expensive than non-organic. You’ll need to factor this into your wedding budget. Patronize – many new companies have entered the green wedding market. Before booking your vendors, check them out to see if they actually provide the green services they claim to offer. Inform – one green turn deserves another. Let your guests know the steps you’ve taken to plan your green wedding, and show them that an elegant event doesn’t have to be harmful to the environment.
ALL IN THE DETAILS – IDEAS
STATIONERY & INVITATIONS Recycle – use recycled paper or paper made from alternative fiber – such as hemp or bamboo. Check out these resources for an array of custom, recycled papers: Custompaper.com or JamPaper.com Splurge on calligraphy – calligraphy may cost more, but it saves on all the inks, toners, solvents and chemicals involved in printing. Condense – save trees by minimizing inserts and other paper products. Always print on both sides and try to fit everything on one sheet. Go completely green – send all correspondence via email. The etiquette gods may frown – but electronic mailings are the most earth-friendly way to go.
THE LOCATION
Rent for a cause – find a venue that will benefit from your site rental fee – such as a museum, gallery or other cultural organization. Go outside – a beach, the woods or gardens – they all make an ideal setting for a green wedding (just be sure to leave it as you found it). Find a green venue – some venues are demonstrating a commitment to saving water and energy, reducing waste, and serving locally grown/organic menus. Check out these resources for green minded venues: Green Hotels Association or Green Seal.
FLOWERS
Think double duty – invite your ceremony arrangements to the reception! You can use them to decorate your cake or gift table – you’ll waste less and save money doing it. Buy organic, locally grown blooms – organic flowers are grown in an environmentally friendly way, without pesticides. Getting locally grown ones will save the fuel burned from transporting the flowers. If you can’t find a local florist who can provide organic blooms, visit OrganicBouquet.com Conserve cut flowers – using cut flowers just once is a waste. If there is another wedding the same day as yours, share your cut flowers with the other wedding party. Skip cut flowers altogether – top your tables with potted arrangements for guests to take and plant in their yards after the wedding.
ATTIRE
Go secondhand – a used gown reduces resources used in creating a new one. Get green fibers – natural fibers like silk and organic cotton are better for the environment than synthetic. Go couture – if your wallet can afford it, couture gowns are usually made from natural fabrics. Donate – Give or sell your gown after the wedding and provide another bride with the good fortune of your green gown decision.
THE MENU
Think organic – ensure that you, your guests and the workers won’t be exposed to pesticides. Many caterers specialize in organic foods; however, almost any caterer can provide an organic menu if you ask them. Think local – if you’re concerned about the cost involved in a completely organic menu, go local instead. Serving locally grown food eliminates fuel reliance and supports local farmers. Check out Localharvest.org or Localfoodworks.org to find farmers markets, farms and other sources of local food. Reuse utensils – find a caterer who recycles materials and or uses linen and china instead of disposables. Donate the leftovers – work with your caterer to send leftovers to a food shelter or other organization. ……………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………
DECOR ELEMENTS
Use candlelight – not only are candles energy efficient, they also create a soft romantic glow for an elegant reception. Use bamboo – one of the most sustainable materials on earth, bamboo is an earth-friendly décor option with an organic, modern feel. Use bamboo stalks for centerpieces or as décor elements.

Make It Happen Rev. Adam LaMont China
I am always excited to perform wedding ceremonies. It’s gives me great joy to see a man and a woman come together at the altar, and vow to spend their lives together. It’s a wonderful sight to see their families and friends look with pride as their loved ones profess their love for one another. Wedding days are some of the most beautiful days that God has given humanity. The wedding itself requires months, and even years of planning. Unfortunately, many couples put more time, effort, and work into the wedding than they do the marriage. There are several conversations that should take place concerning the marriage. One topic that many couples never talk about is intimacy. When most people hear that word, their mind immediately goes to sex. While intimacy may lead to sex, there is more to intimacy than just sex. Intimacy can strengthen a marriage. The lack of intimacy can destroy a marriage. Most couples, when considering marriage, talk about finances, children, their career goals, and a myriad of other things. The one topic that they often overlook is intimacy. They expect it to just happen. It’s never planned, and it’s never a priority. They think that it is just supposed to happen. One of the biggest reasons why this mistake is made is because couples usually don’t have a problem with intimacy while dating. They think that because its not a problem now, it won’t be one later. They think that things will always be the same. Anyone who is married, or has been married, can tell you that there’s a BIG difference between dating and marriage. Many couples don’t factor in the demands of building a life together. Once married, they are so focused on their careers, money, bills, and children, that they find their marriage imploding. Every married couple has to make intimacy a priority. It should not just be something that is done whenever you have nothing else to do. Intimacy should be a part of your schedule each day. Whether its cuddling on the sofa to watch a movie, just chatting about your day, going out on a date, or even going for a quiet stroll around the neighborhood, intimacy must happen. It won’t just happen, we must make it happen. When intimacy is a priority in a marriage, that couple will both find their needs are being met. They will not only be married, but they’ll also become best friends. It is my prayer that as you prepare for your wedding day, you will also prepare for your marriage. Intimacy is a detail that should never be taken for granted. Strong marriages are a result of strong, intimate connections. Make it happen!

Adams Northeast AME invites you to worship with them each Sunday at 8:45 for Church School, and 10am for worship. Bible Study is each Wednesday at 12pm and 6:30pm.

TIPS
for Planning a
MULTI-CULTURAL
WEDDING
12 TIPS FOR PLANNING A MULTICULTURAL WEDDING
G
1.
Communicate openly with both sides of the family early in the process to discuss which traditions they would like to incorporate.
2.
Make it clear that this is your wedding, yet you also want to make your families’ customs a part of your day. If they’re not 100% happy with your choices, don’t sweat it. The important thing is you tried, and they’ll probably come around once they see the awesome party you’ve put together.
3.
Pick a ceremony site that will accommodate your wedding, and know their rules. If you want to get married in a religious center like a church or synagogue, you may need to take classes or follow special guidelines before you can marry there.
4.
Consider getting pre-marital counseling. It may be the differences that first attracted you to each other, but for a multicultural marriage to stand the test of time important topics like faith, finances, and childrearing should be discussed in detail before you walk down the aisle. Talking over the big stuff with counselors like Drs. Michelle and Patrick Gannon ofMarriage Prep 101 can clarify expectations and help you avoid trouble down the line.
5.
Educate each of your families on what would be considered inappropriate behavior in the other’s social world. A wedding is not the place for cultural faux pas.
6.
Don’t feel you have to put all your cultural eggs in one basket. If your backgrounds present too sharp a contrast to be equally represented during the ceremony, there are other opportunities to give each family its due. For example, reserve the ceremony for the bride’s heritage and turn the rehearsal dinner into a celebration of the groom’s. It’s the perfect occasion to explore the African custom of “Tasting the Spices,” or introduce guests to o-shaku, the Japanese sake pouring ritual that reaffirms the bond between friends. If you or your groom is South Asian, why not host a mehndi party for your bachelorette gathering? All the female relatives will enjoy expressing their inner artist through decorative henna designs.
7.
Personalize your ceremony. Some officiants of differing religions are open to conducting the ceremony jointly and can help you design one that honors both ethnic and religious traditions. Just make sure the ceremony doesn’t try to incorporate too much and run too long.
8.
Help your guests understand any special wedding rituals. If you’re including unusual elements in your wedding, such as the Hispanic custom of wrapping the couple in a lasso, provide brief explanations of their significance in your wedding program so that your guests can appreciate their symbolism. Alternatively, your officiant can clue everyone in.
9.
Take advantage of ethnic traditions that do double-duty. Did you know that the breaking of a wine glass after the “I dos” is not only a Jewish custom, but an Italian one as well? And the canopy covering an Indian ceremony, called a mandap, looks just like a souped-up Jewish chuppa!
10.
Get inventive with the food. Fusion cuisine is super popular nowadays, so make a cutting-edge gourmet statement while demonstrating how well two cultures can blend together.
11.
Schedule dance classes for family members before the big day. Not only is this a fun ice-breaker, but teaching both sides of the family a few key steps of the hora or some salsa moves (or whatever specialty dancing you’ll have at your wedding) will make them more likely to enjoy participating.
12.
Honoring your families’ cultures is great, but don’t forget to showcase your own personalities. Put your favorite songs on the play list and teach Cousin Habib and Tia Elena how to rock the house. Or personalize the wedding favors—chocolates from Ghirardelli Square where you had your first date, for example. Article Link: www.herecomestheguide.com
