Farmers’ Markets The farmer’s markets offer a wonderful variety of fresh produce & products as well as the time-honoured products of crafters and traditional tradespeople. The Apple Route encourages you to visit a market near you! Our area is blessed with a bounty of fresh produce and products. This bountiful harvest is available through our weekly farmer’s markets, at fresh produce markets or at one of the many roadside stands that flourish through the summer and fall. You can even venture out into the fields to pick your own strawberries, raspberries, apples and other fruits and vegetables.

Apple Route President’s Message: The Apple Route celebrates a special region of Ontario. Only an hour east of Toronto by car, the Apple Route offers a vibrant range of activities. This southern area of Northumberland County, pressed between the Great Pine Ridge and Lake Ontario has, for 200 years, enjoyed a rich agricultural history that brought both prosperity and continuity. Nestled in the rolling hills of Eastern Ontario’s “Apple Country”, the Apple Route meanders through pleasant orchards and friendly towns & villages between Port Hope and Trenton. The core of the Apple Route follows signs along Heritage Highway 2 and “spurs” take the traveler to scenic Presqu’ile Park near Brighton, historical Lakeport, past Fort Kente at Carrying Place and connects with the Loyalist Parkway. Numerous craft stores and roadside markets carry apple-theme items. The scenic countryside, pleasant orchards and friendly communities along the Apple Route are a haven for visitors with an appetite for the simple pleasures of a slower pace of life governed by the land, the water and the seasons. From several harbours you can sample trophy fishing on Lake Ontario. Museums and galleries flourish in all the communities along the route and more than sixty antique stores cater to tastes from the primitive to the formal. Beaches, public parks, wildlife sanctuaries and public footpaths all provide access to some of the prettiest landscapes in southern Ontario. Presqu’ile Provincial Park is an enormous resource for campers and birders. All along the Route you’ll be delighted by the range and sophistication of dining and accommodation facilities. Spas, bed and breakfasts, country inns, hotels and motels abound; each provides helpful advice and suggestions for making the most of your visit. Downtown Port Hope is a heritage conservation district and the main street boasts the best preserved streetscape in Ontario. The Capitol Theatre offers year round entertainment in music, dance, comedy, opera, and a professional summer season of plays. One of the last atmospheric theatres still in operation in Canada, the theatre was built in 1930 and is fully restored and barrier-free. Things of interest include year round festivals and events, trails, waterfront, and the Ganaraska River and Forest Centre. Come for the day and stay the night. Sliced apples have a tendency to brown quickly. Mixing a quarter cup of apple juice with a cup of water and pouring over the sliced apples will help keep them from browning.

Grafton and area

In 1784,

a treaty with the Mississauga Indians ceded a large

tract of land along the north shore of Lake Ontario to the British Crown. A number of villages sprang up along the shoreline, one of which was to become the village of Grafton. Originally called Haldimand Corners, the village was located at the junction of Danforth Road, (1800), the road leading southward towards Grafton Harbour, and the surveyed baseline road from Trenton (1790). Grafton probably has more buildings of historic and architectural significance per capita than any town in Ontario.

Types of Apples Braeburn Orange to red in colour with a slight yellow tinge. Excellent for snacking and great for salads, pies, and baking. They also freeze well.

Cortland Red on top of a greenish yellow background. Sweet with a hint of tartness, this apple is good for snacking, pies, salads, sauces, and baking. Freezes well.

Empire Apples Green and red colored. Has a particularly sweet/tart taste. Mostly used in salads and excellent for pies as well as a snacking item. Good for freezing.

Fuji Apples Reddish pink in color. Was introduced into America from Japan. Good for snacking and for additing to salads. Good also for pies and sauces. Not good for freezing.

Gala Apples Yellow background covered with pinkish stripes. Is a cross between Golden Delicious and Kidd’s orange red (a variety from New Zealand). Sweet tasting. Excellent for pies and snacking but not for freezing.

Golden Delicious Yellow in colour. Sweet tasting. Not related to the Red Delicious variety of apples even though the names suggest it. Compared to Red Delicious, this apple is sweeter, has a juicy texture, is rounder and the skin is thinner. Baking this apple brings out its unique flavour.

Granny Smith Green in colour. Mild flavoured with a nice balance of sweetness and tartness. Can be stored for as long as half a year. Great for baking, sauces and snacking.

Red Delicious Deep red in color. Taller and thinner in contrast to other round varieties. This apple is the most popular for snacking with its sweet, tart taste. The strong flavour is found in the thick and somewhat bitter skin. Although a great snacking apple, it is not the best apple for baking.

McIntosh Red in colour, Sweet, juicy and tart tasting. “Macs” were developed in 1811 by an Ontario farmer by the name of John McIntosh. They are one of the most popular and top selling varieties of apples in North America. Varieties such as Empire, Cortland and Spartan are produced by crossing McIntoshes with other varieties. Great for snacking, pies, sauce and salads.

Spartan Dark red over a greenish yellow. An all-purpose medium sized apple that is a cross between the McIntosh and the Newtown apple. Has a crisp texture with a uniquely sweet flavour. A great snacking apple. Excellent for sauce.

Memory Junction Museum

Memory Junction is a Designated Heritage Site located in Brighton’s former CN Railway Station; it was originally built in 1857 a year after the Grand Trunk Railway line was opened from Toronto to Montreal in 1856. C.N.R. bought the Grand Trunk Station in 1918 and the Morrow building was built by the Morrow family which received by rail the first motor cars which were picked up

by Ford dealers at the building from Oshawa to Brockville. There were approx 32 trains a day stopping thru that era. The boarding car houses thousands of pictures of school classes and Brighton and area pictures. The Box car displays the best Apple Memorabilia in the area, there is also a 1913 wooden Caboose, a 1989 Velocipede, 2 metal cabooses, flat cars, a new addition a R.R. Bicycle and thousands of other R.R. Artefacts and Memorabilia from Brighton and area.
