Welcome Patients and Visitors My name is Rik Ganderton, and I am the President & CEO here at the Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS). I’d like to take a moment to personally welcome you to RVHS. Whether you are a patient or visitor, you should know that at Rouge Valley Centenary in east Toronto and Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering in west Durham, delivering the best patient care is our priority. It is also our mantra to be the best at what we do. This is not a task that our team of health care professionals take lightly.
We pride ourselves on our quality core services in Emergency, Cardiac Care, Mental Health and Paediatrics. Both of our hospital campuses have fully-supported emergency departments equipped to serve the acute care needs of our rapidlygrowing and richly-diverse communities.
Rik Ganderton President & C.E.O.
Our expansion at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering is already well underway on time and on budget for completion in 2010. Our patients will see and additional 70,000 square feet of healthcare facilities for emergency and related services. The redevelopment project includes:
New Emergency Department • Construction will provide space for the anticipated 60,000 patient visits a year. Currently staff and physicians care for 42,000-plus patients a year in a space designed for 20,000. • A special area to treat patients who may have come in contact with dangerous chemicals is also part of the design. • Ambulances will access the Emergency Department by a dedicated road through a new four-bay covered entrance.
New Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiac Diagnostic Area • New and better designed space will improve access in the Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiac Diagnostic areas of the hospital. • New equipment will be installed in this space and cardiac education will be enhanced.
New Laboratory • A new lab will be built. • Services will continue to be provided for inpatients and outpatients.
New Complex Continuing Care Unit • This new unit will allow the hospital to care for patients who are transitioning from acute care to long term care or home.
2
Patient Services Directory
Expanded Ambulatory Care Unit • Will provide space for outpatient clinic visits, a fracture clinic, outpatient procedures, medical day care and pre-admit visits. At Rouge Valley Centenary, we have recently opened the new Birthing and Newborn Centre in early 2009 to replace our old facilities. The new centre includes: • 16 Labour, Delivery, Recovery and Postpartum (LDRP) rooms that each look like a wellfurnished bedroom • 21 additional post-partum beds for use by mothers who need to stay longer than 60 hours after giving birth, or when the LDRP rooms are needed for deliveries. These beds are located in postpartum rooms that will be comfortable, homelike spaces where mothers and babies are cared for together by the same health care team. These rooms also provide space for family members to stay overnight. Visiting hours are unlimited. • A brand new Advanced Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, built adjacent to modern, state-of-the-art operative birthing rooms. • A Family Lounge with comfortable chairs and couches, a children’s play area, a telephone and internet access. This is an area for families to relax while awaiting the birth of a baby, or when visiting the mother and baby after birth. The lounge also offers a small library of educational material, to help families feel a part of the birthing and baby care process. • Four private care-by-parent rooms for parents to look after babies who may be admitted for prolonged periods. • Two overnight hostel rooms for mothers and families who have been discharged before their babies are ready to go home.
Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) - The best at what we do. RVHS is an excellent acute care community hospital, with many programs including 24/7/365 emergency, cardiac care and mental health. Your Stay in the Hospital Checking in at Admitting The first thing to do when you arrive is to check in at Admitting, which is just off the lobby at both the Ajax and Centenary locations. There, you will register as a patient and provide the information we need to begin taking care of you.
You’ll need to bring the following: • Your Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card; • Your Rouge Valley Health System card, if you have one; • Any medications you are using, including pills, inhalers, creams or eye drops; • Your clothes and personal hygiene items, such as a toothbrush, shaving kit, and similar items. (Don’t forget your denture case if you wear dentures, or your contact lens case and solutions, if you wear contacts); • Your private health insurance information, if you have private insurance. (People who have private insurance still need to sign hospital insurance forms upon registration.) Do not bring valuables and jewelry. It’s best to leave such things at home, because with so many people coming into and out of the health centres, we simply cannot take responsibility for lost or stolen items. Ask your family to take care of your valuables for you, until you are discharged. In particular, do not bring cell phones or laptop computers. Any electrical equipment including radios, electric shavers and other appliances must be inspected and approved by the hospital’s electrician, to ensure that they will not interfere with the medical equipment. This is done for the safety of all patients..
Patient Rooms Rouge Valley Health System offers three types of accommodation for patients who are admitted to the hospital: Ward......................... Four patients to a room Semi-private............ Two patients to a room Private..................... One patient to a room OHIP covers the standard ward rate, but not the additional cost of private or semi-private rooms. If you want a private or semi-private room, be prepared to pay the difference between the standard ward rate and the accommodation you choose. Sometimes the private or semi-private rooms are all occupied. If you ask for one and it’s not available you will be booked into whatever is available. Then, if the type of room you prefer becomes available later, we’ll arrange for you to be transferred.

Safety First Please keep these simple hospital safety rules in mind:
Cell Phones Cell phones are allowed in some areas of the hospital. Please observe any signs posted, which will indicate where cell phones are and are not permitted. Please check with staff if you are not certain.
Balloons Do not bring latex rubber balloons into the health centres. Some people are allergic to them and could become very sick from an allergic reaction. If your visitors want to cheer you up by bringing you balloons, ask them to bring the shiny Mylar ones. You can buy Mylar balloons in party stores and in the hospital gift shop.
For Your Health Diabetes Education To learn more about your diabetes, please ask your nurse about diabetes education. There is a Diabetes Education Centre at both Rouge Valley Centenary and Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering.
Fire Alarms If you hear a fire alarm it may just be our regular monthly fire drill. Stay in your room, close the door (if you are able) and await instructions from the staff. If it is more than just a drill, the staff will quickly arrive. Patients who need help to leave will be taken out by the staff; those who can go on their own will be told to do so. If you are told to leave the area, use the stairs and exit outside. DO NOT use an elevator.
Medical Students Rouge Valley is not a teaching hospital; however, you may encounter medical students, and students in related disciplines such as nursing and physiotherapy. The students, like all our staff, can be identified by their hospital ID badges. If a student is involved in your care, you will be introduced to him or her. The students are knowledgeable and well supervised by senior staff. However, as a patient you have a right to refuse to have a student involved in your care. It’s your choice.
Nurse Call System The nurse call system will be explained when you are admitted to your room. Should you need help, you may use it to call the nursing station. If you have questions about this, please ask any member of your health care team.
Nutritional Counselling Nutritionally balanced meals are provided to patients three times daily. If you have any nutritional concerns or special dietary needs, please ask for a visit from a nutritionist.

This service is available to all surrounding area residents and their families, as well as to physicians and other health care providers. Discharge planners can provide information on a number of community support services. To ensure the best use of our resources, we ask that you arrange for transportation home between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on the day of your discharge. (These times may vary in certain units; please check with the unit clerk.) Your bed will be reserved for another patient, so promptness is much appreciated. Paying Your Bill Fees and Uninsured Charges OHIP pays the cost of most hospital services to Ontario residents with valid OHIP cards. Canadian residents with health cards from other Canadian provinces are also covered. If you are insured in another province we will process an interprovincial claim on your behalf. Non-residents of Canada as well as Canadian residents without a provincial health card must pay for all charges. Fees are based on the rates established by the Ontario Ministry of Health and are due when services are received. Even for those patients who are covered by OHIP, there are still some items not covered, and you will have to pay for them. One such item, as mentioned above, is the extra cost of a private or semi-private room (you may have private insurance which covers this). Other items not covered are: • Television rental • Respite care • Cosmetic surgery • Uninsured procedures
• Circumcision • Ambulance charges • Crutches, canes, and casts.
Anticipated bills for cosmetic surgery or other treatment not covered by OHIP can be paid to the admitting clerk when you are admitted to the hospital. Bills can also be paid at the emergency registration desk seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Please refer to our price list brochure for specific fees.
Business Office/Cashier’s Office The Business Office/Cashier’s office handles all patient accounts and is located in the main lobby at both the Ajax and Centenary sites. Patients are asked to visit the Business Office/Cashier’s Office prior to leaving the health centre, to settle any outstanding bills. Accounts for items that represent a running total throughout your visit, such as TV rental and telephone charges, are among the fees paid at this time. Cash, VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, debit cards, cheques and money orders are all accepted. Hours: Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Being a Patient Visiting Hours We encourage visits from family and friends, because visits make a significant contribution to a patient’s recovery. Visiting hours at RVHS are from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. We ask all patients to invite only two visitors as a time, as a courtesy to our other patients and to minimize noise. Visitors may also be asked to leave a patient’s room when requested in order to proceed with medical care or treatments. In some circumstances, it is important for a family member to stay with the patient overnight. Please discuss this option with your nurse, and be sure to obtain a temporary visitor’s pass from the nursing station. Some units have special hours and restrictions, such as Labour and Delivery, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, the Intensive Care Unit and the Cardiac Care Unit. Please check with the Unit Clerk for times and any age restrictions. Thank you.
Know Your Care Givers During your hospital stay you will meet a variety of health care professionals and support staff team members. You can identify them by their Rouge Valley Health System photo ID badges. The best person to help you with any concerns you may have is a member of the health care team on your unit. Just ask your nurse or the Unit Manager for assistance.
Waiting Unfortunately, waiting is part of being in a hospital. While we do our very best to make any delays as short as possible, you and your family are bound to experience some waiting time. If you are waiting with children, bring them some toys they can play with quietly. Bring a book for yourself. These things will help pass the time and reduce tension.

Look Good, Feel Better Program ROUGE VALLEY - CENTENARY This program is especially for female cancer patients, who are often subject to extra depression because powerful cancer treatments take a toll on their personal appearance. The program offers skin care, hairpieces, wigs and make-up, to normalize the appearance and lift the spirits. These services are offered every third Wednesday in the Chemotherapy Clinic at Rouge Valley Centenary. For more information, call 416-281-7483.
Palliative Care Palliative Care means caring for patients with a disease that cannot be cured. It is part of the Cancer Care Program. When the doctor refers a patient to Palliative Care, the total care team includes doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, volunteers and a religious representative if the patient wants one. They provide coordinated care, symptom and pain management and support. Bereavement support services are also available.
Pet Therapy It’s a medical fact that affectionate interaction with a pet helps healthy people to stay healthy and sick people to feel better. It reduces blood pressure and provides a sense of well being. Both hospitals bring in pet therapy dogs, with their handlers, to visit patients who wish to take advantage of this service.
ROUGE VALLEY - AJAX & PICKERING At Rouge Valley Ajax, a pet therapy dog arrives every Wednesday afternoon to visit patients in Inpatient Rehab and Mental Health.
ROUGE VALLEY - CENTENARY The pet therapy dogs bring cheer when they visit the Cardiac Care Unit and Rehabilitation. Ask the nurse about their schedule.
Private Nursing & Private Nursing Assistant Care In cases where inpatients or their families want private nursing care, the hospital works with local nursing and nursing assistant agencies, to arrange it. To make arrangements, please contact the unit clerk on the patient’s floor. The clerk will connect you with a nursing agency. The agency will confirm whether your insurance covers the cost or not, and if it doesn’t, they will tell you what it’s going to cost you. The financial contract is between you and the agency.
Social Workers Social workers help patients and families deal with emotional and social matters related to illness and hospitalization. They provide counseling and help arrange access to a range of community resources. To contact a social worker, just ask a member of your health care team.

NEW PATIENT SERVICES ROUGE VALLEY - AJAX & PICKERING
Newborn Screening Program In accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care provincial guidelines, we collect a blood sample from every newborn born at Rouge Valley Health System and send it to the Provincial Newborn Screening Laboratory in Ottawa. These samples provide this lab with necessary specimens in order to screen each newborn for at least 28 different disorders. Although most babies with these disorders look healthy at birth, they may be at risk for serious health problems – including developmental disabilities, recurrent sickness and even death – if their disorder is not detected and treated. Early identification could save your baby’s life, and is the key to effective treatment.
Educational Services Prenatal classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for four weeks. Participants are asked to bring a mat, pillow, and a drink. Cost: $110. Call 905-683-2320 ext. 1226. Tours for parents-to-be take place Monday evenings at 8:00 p.m., except holiday Mondays. They last just over an hour and there is no need to pre-register. Meet outside the Admitting Department of the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering site on the first floor. Educational videos are available for all new mothers and their support group and cover a range of topics including breastfeeding, baby care and car seat safety.
Enhanced Rooming In This program offers special support for new mothers, centred on the needs of the family. Physicians examine the baby at the bedside and answers questions. Family members learn about baby care from nurses in the hospital. This eases the transition from hospital to home, and gives people a sense of confidence in caring for the newest addition to the family, including greater success with breastfeeding and other aspects of baby care. Fathers and/or other support people are welcome throughout the hospital stay and are encouraged to participate.
Breastfeeding Resources Breastfeeding is natural, but it’s also a skill. The Drop-In Support Group meets twice a week at the hospital to help mothers ensure greater success with feeding baby the natural way. Tuesday: Friday:
1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Call 905-683-2320, ext. 1597. www.rougevalley.ca

Back to Sleep Program The health care team teaches these principles to new mothers, partners and grandparents, in order to reduce the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Newborns are positioned on their backs to sleep, loosely bundled to allow free breathing. No bumper pads or stuffed toys are allowed in the crib, to make sure the baby’s face doesn’t become obstructed, causing breathing difficulty. This style of sleeping is recommended for babies by Health Canada, the Canadian Paediatric Society and the Canadian Child Health Institute.
Healthy Babies, Healthy Children This program offers extra support to new mothers by providing the services of a Public Health Nurse. After you give birth, hospital nurses will discuss your needs, complete assessment forms and, with your consent, refer you to a public health nurse within the Public Health Department at either the City of Toronto or Durham Region. Once you are home with your baby, the public health nurse will visit and answer questions about taking care of your new baby, and finding services in the community.
Circumcision in the Hospital Circumcisions for newborns is available at both sites. Speak to the health care team responsible for your baby’s care while in hospital to arrange a circumcision appointment. Please be aware that the hospital and physician’s fee must be paid at the time of the procedure.
Infant Discharge If you are planning on driving your child home, provincial law requires that each newborn must leave the hospital in an approved car seat.
