Native American Lecture & Lunch

Local Native Americans:
Who We Were and Who We Are Lunch at Eastern Woodland Longhouse For hundreds of years, southcentral Pennsylvania was home to a series of Native American tribes, including the Shenks Ferry, Conoy, Lenape, Mohawk, Nanticoke, Seneca, Shawnee and Susquehannock peoples. Unfortunately, today most of us are unaware of the rich history of the state’s Native People. In fact, Pennsylvania is one of a few states without an officially recognized tribe and no tribal reserve. As part of its mission to represent the culture and context of Lancaster County’s first European settlers, Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society and the 1719 Hans Herr House & Museum have worked with others to construct a replica Native American longhouse to honor Pennsylvania’s Native People.
FALL 2016
LECTURE AT CULTURAL CENTER: Barry Lee from the Munsee Nation will speak about the Eastern Woodland people (primarily the Lenape and Iroquois), their history, and the Great Law of Peace. The Great Law is the guiding organizational and spiritual concept brought to the people by the PeaceMaker in the 1300s. It is from this Great Law that the people formed “representative government and community philosophy before the Europeans arrived.
TRADITIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN LUNCH: After the lecture, travel by bus to the Lancaster Longhouse, located on the grounds of the Hans Herr House, to enjoy a traditional Native American lunch, served on authentic dishes, prepared by members of the local Native American community. In addition to the lunch, you will learn from the Native Americans about the Longhouse and the Native culture, both past and present. The Lancaster Longhouse is one of the only interactive exhibits of Native life in Pennsylvania and one of the few similar buildings in the nation. Menu: Wild Mushroom Soup, Venison Stuffed Squash, Corn Cakes with Wild Berries, Strawberry Tea

Paavo Järvi ˇ Conducts Dvorák and Beethoven – with Rudolf Buchbinder Length: 1 hour 47 minutes The Orchestre de Paris, under the baton of music director Paavo Järvi, performs two works by Antonín Dvořák: Symphonic Variations and the Eighth Symphony, composed ten years apart. Symphony No. 8, graceful, joyful and brilliant, but always epic and lyric, is often performed next to the Czech composer’s Symphonic Variation, maybe because the two scores are very similarly constructed with themes and variations. Between the two works, rising star Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder, renowned for his affinity with the classic repertoire, plays Beethoven’s Third Piano concerto.

Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse
Length: 1 hour 45 minutes
Length: 1 hour 30 minutes
At the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Silk Road Ensemble and cellist Yo-Yo Ma perform popular and contemporary cross-cultural works. Founded in 2000 by Yo-Yo Ma, this multicultural musical ensemble gathers musicians, composers, arrangers and visual artists from more than twenty different countries. This “roving musical laboratory without walls” links musical heritages to promote multicultural music by composers from all around the world, developing unexpected musical collaborations, like a travel between cultures, like a bridge between human cultural differences.
Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, but he was not alone. Great artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro, and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. See these artists, along with other famous names in this innovative and extensive exhibition from The Royal Academy of Arts, London. Take a magical and widely travelled journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract color, decorative design, and utopian ideas.

Length: 1 hour 35 minutes
The young musicians of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra begin with Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, one of the composer’s most popular works. It was also featured in the soundtrack of Milos Forman’s Amadeus. The orchestra is joined by French cellist Gautier Capuçon playing one of the most renowned cello concertos of the repretoire, Camille Saint-Saëns’s masterpiece which is conspicuous for his lyricism and vitality. The concert ends with Beethoven’s Symphony No 5. As an encore, Gautier Capuçon and the orchestra perform Tchaikovsky’s Andante Cantabile – a milestone!
World-renowned pianists Brigitte Engerer and Boris Berezovsky at the Salle Pleyel performing transcriptions of works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Liszt and Khachaturian. Highlighting the musical bond of two piano stars, who both studied at the Moscow Conservatory, this program pays tribute to their favorites from the Russian repertoire from The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and Prince Igor. This is also an occasion to rediscover Mozart’s The Magic Flute in Ferruccio Busoni’s sophisticated transcription. For the finale, they perform Khachaturian’s Masquerade for two pianos.

Neeme Järvi: One Thousand and One Nights – with Janine Jansen Length: 1 hour 52 minutes This concert gathers various works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Carl Nielsen, and Massenet, who drew their inspiration from iconic figures of the Eastern folk tales. Thus, this program pictures Sheherazade, the story teller in One Thousand and One Nights, Aladdin and Thais. Thais is the heroin of Massenet’s opera, but the Meditation has become, with no doubt, one of the most popular pieces among the violin repertoire. Janine Jansen, a young and talented violinist, plays it as well as Camille Saint-Saëns’s Introduction et rondo capriccioso.

Liz Hess A full-time artist, Liz Hess is the fourth child of missionaries to Honduras, Central America, where she was born in 1965. Returning home with her family in the early 1970s, she grew up in Lancaster. Even as a young girl, she was known for her artistic ability, collecting awards for her work throughout her childhood and teenage years. Once a year, Liz travels abroad to spend several weeks painting on location. Trying to capture on canvas such beautiful locations as the old world charm of Tuscany, the canals of Venice, the lavender fields of Provence, or the brooding sea and landscapes of Ireland has proven to be invaluable in stretching Liz’s artistic imagination. One of her most popular collections is the Red Umbrella series which was first created during one of those trips. Following the solitary figure with the red umbrella, Liz takes the viewer on a journey to many of the beautiful locales she has visited. The collection continues to grow as she continues to travel. Liz’s cat and dog have been an influence behind another popular series. Departing from her typical style of more representational art, she ventures into the crazy world of illustrated felines and canines. Her “All about Cats & Dogs” collection highlights the episodes of life as can only be told by a group of colorfully eclectic creatures. You can also stop in to see additional artwork by Liz on display at The Clubhouse. SEP 12 – OCT 25

Her first solo exhibit opened on her 21st birthday at the Widener Museum of Art in Chester, Pennsylvania. Her realistic watercolors and oils reflect the Brandywine tradition that surrounded Linda in her youth. Landscapes are her first love and primary subject matter. Life of the Mind Socrates Café
Socrates Café encourages spirited discussion about issues and topics that challenge our beliefs about contemporary society and who we are as human beings. Our quest is not to arrive at answers or consensus but rather to develop more and better questions. We seek clarification of our own thinking and careful and respectful consideration of the views of others as we sift through, sort out, and attempt to arrive at new insights into the topics under discussion. So if you enjoy thinking about and questioning commonly accepted assumptions (even your own) and if you are willing to challenge the taken-for-granted authority of any position or representation of fact or truth, join us at Socrates Café.
Socrates Café meets in the Cultural Center Ballroom on the second Monday of each month from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

And no wonder, since foreign-born residents now make up a near-record 14% of the U.S. population. This program steps back from recent controversies to take a broader look at the history of immigration to the United States from the indentured servants of the colonial era, to the peasants and working poor of nineteenth-century Europe, to the war refugees and high-tech entrepreneurs of today. Seekers of freedom and economic opportunity have been drawn to America for more than 400 years. Collectively, they forged the unique sense of identity which is idealized – if not always honored – in the nation’s official motto, E Pluribus Unum: “Out of many, one.” Thursday, September 22 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Cultural Center Education Room Presenter: John Maietta, U.S. Army Retired Cost: $5

Eternal Egypt: From King Tut to the Arab Spring This two-part program takes a fascinating journey through 5,000 years of Egyptian civilization. Begin by exploring the glories of ancient Egypt: the temples, tombs, and treasures that still have a powerful hold on our imaginations today. Less well-known is the heritage of early Jewish and Christian life, which we can still see in the narrow lanes of Old Cairo. Finally, we’ll highlight the last millennium of Muslim rule in Egypt, which brought new challenges to this timeless land – culminating in the 2011 “Arab Spring” revolt. Part history, part travelogue, this program will give you a new appreciation for the beauty, grandeur, and lasting cultural impact of Eternal Egypt.
