Lancaster British Brass Band Brass Spectacular

T

he Lancaster British Brass Band follows the path started in the smoky mill and mining towns of mid-nineteenth century Britain. Gradually evolving into a fixed instrumentation of 28-players with a conductor, the brass band flourished under the sponsorship of mill and mine owners bent on “morale and spiritual uplift.” Later, the Salvation Army benefited from the popularity of brass bands by using their music as part of their outreach. For concert programs, brass bands borrow from virtually every musical genre. A typical program consists of transcriptions of the classics, marches, hymns, popular music arrangements, solos, and original compositions written for the medium. Programs are selected for a balanced presentation to please a wide range of tastes and interests. The unique sound quality of a British Brass Band is due to it being composed entirely of brass, wind, and percussion AUG 1 Thursday, 7:00 p.m. instruments. SPECIAL EVENTS

Trout Fishing in America Trout Fishing in America is the longstanding, and yet seemingly unlikely musical partnership of Keith Grimwood and Ezra Idlet. As individuals, they are about as different as one can imagine. Together, they blend seamlessly in a way that has captured the imagination (and hearts) of audiences of all ages for over three decades. Ezra on guitar and banjo stands 6'8" tall while Keith on bass stretches to 5'5 1/2" on a humid day. Ezra is more playful and extroverted, while Keith is more serious and reserved. Each of them bring out the best in the other and the joy that comes from this musical interaction is contagious and impossible to deny. Trout Fishing in America was in the first wave of artist owned labels (Trout Records) to successfully record and market their own music. Their recordings have garnered multiple national awards, as well as four Grammy nominations. This family show is great for kids and adults. The program will be a mix of folk and pop music combined with lots of laughs. EVERYONE is welcome to attend this performance. JUN 19

SUMMER 2019

Documentary Beethoven’s Hair Length: 1 hour 58 minutes This documentary by Larry Weinstein, based on the book by Russell Martin, focuses on the strange journey taken by a lock of Beethoven’s hair. The tale of the composer’s life, legacy, and works unfold. Soon after Beethoven’s death, a boy cut a lock of the composer’s iconic hair as a keepsake. Nearly two centuries later, that same hair was purchased by two American Beethoven enthusiasts at a Sotheby’s auction. What that lock of hair reveals—through forensic testing and the story of generations of owners—is the subject of this award-winning film. JULY 30 Tuesday, 10:00 a.m.

Exhibition On Screen: Young Picasso Length: 1 hour 31 minutes This film discusses how the young Pablo Picasso honed his extraordinary talent through three cities: Malaga, Barcelona and Paris. Young Picasso visits each and explores their influence on him, focusing on specific artworks from these early years. Working closely with all three Picasso Museums in Malaga, Barcelona, and Paris, this film explains Picasso’s rise. Looking carefully at two key early periods: the so-called Blue Period and Rose Period – the film takes us back to 1907 and the creation of a critical painting in the history of art – Les Demoiselles d’Avignon when Picasso was only 25 years old. Martin Helmchen Plays Bach, Liszt, and Beethoven Length: 1 hour 22 minutes Experience Martin Helmchen’s virtuosic and sensitive playing in this Verbier Festival recital that effortlessly bridges the distance between Bach and Liszt. The young pianist Martin Helmchen shows a surprising maturity as he moves seamlessly from Bach to Mendelssohn by way of Mozart, Schubert, and Schumann. Highlights include Bach’s Partita No. 1 in B-flat major and Liszt’s F minor Prelude (based on a cantata by Bach), Années de Pèlerinage, and Nuages gris. AUG 27 Tuesday, 1:30 p.m.

Sir Simon Rattle Conducts French Works with the Labèque Sisters Length: 1 hour 59 minutes Sir Simon Rattle at Waldbühne, joined by the extraordinary French duo of pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque. Rattle is clearly in top form as the Labeque sisters deliver a contrasting pair of pieces. The Poulenc Concerto for two Pianos has an abundance of spiky moments typical of the composer, as well as moments of lyrical tenderness. Much the same can be said of Saint Saens Carnival. Consequently, there is much subtle detail brought out in the quieter and more reflective moments of the opening Berlioz Overture, the Debussy Prelude, the Dukas’ Sorcerer, as well as Bolero. Mary Stoudt Award-winning contemporary quilting and fiber artist, Mary Stoudt, of Reading, PA, has been stitching, weaving, making paper, and mixing media to create diverse works since the 1970s. Her art has appeared in invitational and juried shows throughout eastern Pennsylvania, the mid-Atlantic states, and internationally. Mary has an M.S. degree in Art Education from Kutztown University and has taught in Berks County, PA for thirty years. In 2003, Stoudt began layering fabric in a grid-like fashion. While creating her quilts, intuition and improvisation play a role in Stoudt’s work. First, visualizing a quilt’s composition, colors, and forms, Stoudt moves through and improvises the details. For certain pieces, Stoudt will make actual size patterns throughout, often introducing new elements while using the pattern. Her work has been described by critics as being whimsical and spiritual. “I love the warmth, the flexibility, the play of color, and textures of quilt making. Improvisation is important to me. Working within the stability of a grid, I feel free to change color and direction as I move through the construction of a quilt. I imagine the composition in my head, and then work intuitively through the process,” says Stoudt. MAY 9 – JUNE 14

Christiane David With a personality as vibrant as her paintings, Belgium born artist Christiane David has taken art to a new level in Lancaster County. Her Lancaster gallery on Prince Street is like walking into an enchanted world of color, and she brings her vibrant artwork to Willow Valley Communities. Christiane started painting as a small girl in Belgium and later studied architecture. She continued her studies in watercolor and oils at the Academy of Art in Brussels, where she was influenced by many of the European impressionists. Regardless of the medium or the subject matter, every painting, large or small, is a dramatization of color, texture, and dimension. Her style is free and spontaneous, yet, technique is the tool she says she always keeps in the back of her mind. “I like to take advantage of the fact that when I paint without fear, and follow my instincts, magical things happen.” Christiane says she loves to experiment and go deeper into the world of color. She often pushes it to the point where there are no rules to follow. “I feel that color has a strong effect on our minds. Whether it is uplifting and happy or serene and relaxing, color can have a powerful impact on all of us. I strongly believe that painting can be the path to meeting your real self.” JUNE 25 – AUGUST 6

Barbara M. Allen “Becoming is better than being. Creation surpasses completion.” Barbara graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a bachelor’s degree in speech and drama, and received her master’s degree from Syracuse University in television. She had careers in both radio and television, including as a daily interviewer at WGAL-TV, and at WITF-TV as writer/producer/host for several programs. In 1993 Barbara discovered a new passion and talent: watercolors. With some guidance from Lititz artist and instructor, Andy Smith, she discovered a talent that had been hidden for most of her life. As they say, “It’s never too late to try something new.” A lot of her work was inspired by images captured on film as she traveled from country to country. Other pieces were inspired by still life. In either case, as a watercolor artist she received two first-place awards from the Lancaster County Art Association. A Resident of Willow Valley Communities, Barbara passed away in November of 2017, but her “can-do” spirit lives on through her watercolors.

Movies That Inspire: Stan and Ollie The year was 1927. Charles Lindbergh had flown non-stop from New York City to Paris, the first talking motion picture, The Jazz Singer, was released, and Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy became a team and appeared together in a movie short. The new duo represented a blending of British and American cultures that would ultimately entertain audiences in 107 motion pictures. The movie, Stan and Ollie, focuses on 1953 and a tour of the United Kingdom by the famous team, giving us an insight into personal lives filled with successes, as well as stress and tension. Come and enjoy an outstanding performance by Steve Coogan as Stan Laurel, and John C. Reilly as Oliver Hardy, as they take us back in history to appreciate the tremendous talent of two great entertainers in the world of motion pictures. Saint Peter’s Village is nestled among many acres of quiet forest, and this historic community is so small, you could easily miss it driving past. The town has not changed much since the late 19th century and provides a glimpse of what it was like more than 100 years ago. The hiking trails wind along a small stream, boulders, and through the shady forest behind the town. Bring your lunch. We will hike, eat, and explore the village. After a period of initial struggle, Tim got back on his feet continuing to work out and lead a healthy lifestyle. He successfully trained for and ran his first triathlon in the summer of 2011. Since that time, Tim has continued to partner with various organizations to encourage physical activities among people with Parkinson’s. Exercise has been shown to have significant positive impacts on the progression of Parkinson’s disease.
