Talavya is a prime example of tradition and modernity coming together seamlessly. Indian hand drums take center stage in the hands of this ensemble, global ambassadors for Indian percussion making the centuries-old art form of tabla accessible to all. Talavya preserves the spirit of Indian classical art while expanding its palette and audience. Each performance moves between rousing peaks and slower, meditative passages not usually associated with percussion. The ensemble engages the sonic energy of Indian traditions, the narrative possibilities of the drum, and the wideopen space for improvisation, creativity, and personal expression typical of Indian arts. Currently, the ensemble is performing a work titled Tabla Ecstasy
Come and join the Fulton team for a live concert highlighting the upcoming season of epic performances at Lancaster city’s downtown gem and historic landmark!

Victoria’s Secrets: He Was My All in All
From the moment she clapped eyes on her future consort Prince Albert, the eighteen-year-old Queen Victoria was entranced. She bore him nine princes and princesses, although she despised childbirth, babies, and children. Her passionate obsession with her husband controlled her life and altered the course of British history.
Sarah Bernhardt: La Divine
Bringing the Ladies to Life Lakes Resident Candace O’Donnell reprises scenes from three of her most requested historic monologues, previously performed at the Ware Center in Lancaster and at Cape May Stage. As she transitions from one fascinating woman to another, Candace will share insights into her research and writing process: “I look for the crazy, the unexpected, the details that defy previous stereotypes about my subjects and will leave my audiences astonished.”
Mary Todd Lincoln: Much Madness Is Divinest Sense
Tuesday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. Cultural Center Theater Cost: No charge Register: Event Registration 13 Fall 2022 | WillowValleyCommunities.org
A Southern belle, Mary Todd Lincoln taught her country bumpkin husband Abraham social graces and how to count votes. But their rise to power brought the loss of every single person she ever loved and her descent into laudanum addiction and mental illness.
The consummate actress, Bernhardt set the bar for all thespians to follow and mesmerized fans with her talent, her age denial, and her amorality. She credited herself with inventing method acting, the publicity agent, the casting couch, and the cougar. The ultimate survivor, she continued to perform the last five years of her life on one leg.

Length: 1 hour, 19 minutes Exhibition On Screen: Michelangelo — Love & Death
A murderer is on the loose in the concert hall! This program of music from your favorite thrillers begins with Bernard Herrmann’s soundtrack for Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Just as this film’s infamous shower scene is inextricably linked with Herrmann’s frantic staccato strings, the works highlighted here do more than just accompany their on-screen thrills — they become an integral part of the experience. Relive the high-stakes drama of The Godfather; follow Special Agent Dale Cooper to the town of Twin Peaks; and hone your powers of deduction with Hercule Poirot (Murder on the Orient Express), Sherlock Holmes, and Robert Langdon (The Da Vinci Code).
From Bach’s Baroque-era Gavotte to waltzes by Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, and Strauss, and from Eastern European folk-inspired dances by Kodály and Dvořák to Argentinian tangos and a Brazilian choro song, you’ll love these marvelously spirited renditions of dances from across countries and centuries.
Michelangelo — Love & Death takes a cinematic journey from the print and drawing rooms of Europe through the chapels and museums of Florence, Rome, and the Vatican. Through expert commentary and his own words, it provides a fresh look at Michelangelo, and a greater understanding of the man, his relationship with his contemporaries, and his valuable artistic legacy.

On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to all American veterans, living or deceased, but especially to the living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. This year, we welcome a distinguished veteran, Colonel Gary Richard Steele, US Army Retired, who was the first African American to earn a varsity letter in football at West Point. Following a distinguished career in the army, Col. Steele retired in 1993 and began a career in human resources. Today, he is in demand as a motivational speaker, and he continues to inspire audiences with principles he draws from his life story. At the conclusion of Col. Steele’s talk, we will introduce the Quilts of Valor project being completed by the Willow Valley Quilt Guild.

Gregory says of his paintings featuring Stroud Preserve, “It is as if our world is coming apart at the seams. Yet, amidst all the chaos, I’ve found a refuge, a sanctuary. Stroud Preserve has become my muse, a world both real and imagined, a place to escape and reflect. I’m painting a portrait of Stroud...It is both figurative and abstract, long, distant vistas and intimate close-ups of the beauty I see. I am mesmerized, transported to a different place by the changing light, the breeze rustling the leaves, and the sound of birdcalls. My hope is to share with you the world as I see it and inspire you to find in my work your own vision of Stroud.”
In gratitude, 10 percent of the proceeds from the sale of all pieces inspired by Stroud goes to support the nonprofit Natural Lands, who works to preserve open space for future generations.
Gregory Blue, Oil
Residing in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Gregory Blue’s work is inspired by the rich artistic traditions of the Brandywine Valley focusing on light and shadow. His palette is vibrant, with simple compositions that allow a deeper examination of the subject in an attempt to elevate the ubiquitous and mundane to the profound.

Kevin Miller is a contemporary oil painter with a passion for capturing the visual experiences of landscapes in paint.
As a painter who likes to paint on location, or “en plein air,” he has been able to slow down and notice the beautiful moments and locations that exist around us — mostly unnoticed as we pass by in our busy lives.
Kevin paints in the alla prima method, completing his works in one sitting by applying layers of wet paint on top of one another (instead of allowing each layer to dry). This approach allows him to think less about painting and more about responding intuitively, resulting in a visual “impression” of the moment, the paint and the brushwork forming a language to communicate that moment in the landscape.
SPIRIT
Kevin Miller, Oil
Kevin has participated in and won various awards at several non-juried and juried art shows, including Heart of Lancaster and Mount Gretna. His hope as an artist is that his paintings encourage people to take time to notice the beauty that can be found in the everyday.

Lunch & Learn
A hundred years ago, an exciting new technology was transforming America: the automobile. This program presents the history of that colorful era, when the first “horseless carriages” were giving way to sporty roadsters, classy limousines, and the ubiquitous Model T Ford. As you’ll learn, the story of our country’s early car culture was driven by unprecedented prospects for personal freedom and mobility — along with the mixed blessings of high-speed roads, expanding suburbs, installment loans, and parking meters.

The definition of “hero” recognizes someone who is admired for courage, achievement, or noble qualities. The American Civil War had heroes on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. Many wore the uniforms of the military, while many others represented various professions or were simply civilians. These were the individuals who “rose to the occasion” and did their patriotic duty, people such as Joshua Chamberlain (Union commander at Gettysburg), Richard Kirkland (Confederate hero at Fredericksburg), Clara Barton (nurse), Harriet Tubman (Moses to escaping slaves), the Black Americans of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, Ely S. Parker (Native American secretary to Ulysses S. Grant), and many others. In this session, we’ll return to those days when our nation, as well as our families, were divided, and a horrible, bloody war was fought, resulting in eventual unification. It was during that time that brave individuals stood by their principles and performed noble deeds.

The Poseidon Adventure Contained within the annals of naval history are disasters in which thousands of passengers entered a watery grave. Examples include RMS Titanic (1912), RMS Empress of Ireland (1914), RMS Lusitania (1915), RMS Lancastria (1940), and USS Indianapolis (1945).
In 1972, the American disaster film The Poseidon Adventure was released, based on the book of the same name by Paul Gallico. The story centers around a 135,000-ton state-of-the-art luxury cruise ship with 3,700 passengers and crew on board. Among them are four terrorists with two bombs destined to destroy the ship. When one of the bombs explodes, the entire ship overturns in the water, leaving a small group of survivors to find their way to the surface of the water and life itself. The film won two Academy Awards, including Best Song. Shelley Winters received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her outstanding performance. Social Media & Acts of Mass Violence
Will a more involved US government help the economy revive?
Tuesday, November 8
Industrial Policy
“The regularity of mass killings breeds familiarity. The rhythms of grief and outrage that accompany them become — for those not directly affected by tragedy — ritualized and then blend into the background noise. That normalization makes it ever less likely that America’s political system will groan into action to take steps to reduce their frequency or deadliness.”

Biden’s Agenda
How will the Biden administration treat foreign policy, among other policies, differently from the last?
What is the effect of social media on genocide and other acts of mass violence?
MIND
The current discussion of industrial policy in the United States is not simply about whether or not to support specific companies or industries, but about trust or mistrust of the government and its ability to manage the economy and deal with a rising China. The upheaval in supply chains during the pandemic exposed weaknesses in the international economy. What policies can the United States implement to deal with trade and the economy?
At Great Decisions, we discuss and debate current world issues. These discussions are supported by materials prepared by the Foreign Policy Association. A background book may be ordered from the association’s website, and a DVD concerning the topic will also be shown at each meeting. The coordinators invite Residents of all Willow Valley Communities to attend and expand their understanding of important issues that impact our world.
From January through June and September through November, the Great Decisions Group meets in the Joseph F. McDonald Auditorium in Spring Run on the second Tuesday of each month at 2:00 p.m.
After the 2020 election, the new administration in Washington promised to reverse many of the policies of the past administration, especially in the area of foreign policy. How will issues such as climate, the pandemic, and alliances be treated under the Biden administration?

Of all the great “trials of the century” in history, the first — and maybe most influential — was the one that sentenced a grumpy philosopher to death. But we can’t understand the trial of Socrates without understanding the context. Athens had recently lost a long war to its bitter rival, Sparta, and was looking to take its anger out on someone. Socrates wasn’t having it: he turned the accusations around and put Athens on trial. Was it a case of free speech, or Athenian vengeance on the most annoying person in the city — and what are its implications for whistleblowers today?

The Fabulous Fifties…or Were They? Were the 1950s about Leave It to Beaver and Father Knows Best? Or were they Emmett Till and Rebel Without a Cause? Were they years of American abundance and democratic triumph? Or a time of atomic anxiety and Joseph McCarthy? We often think of the fifties as bland: an era of conformity and suburban Levittowns, of gray flannel suits for men and domesticity for women. To some extent it was — but underneath the surface, something else was going on. It was a complex decade that planted the seeds of the culture wars we’re living with today. In this session, Professor Steinhorn will dive into the politics, music, media, and race relations of the 1950s. He’ll look at the Cold War and its contradictions, the rise of suburbia and mass consumption, popular culture and the impact of television, and how the fifties led to the sixties.

On August 6, 1911, on Stewart Street in Jamestown, New York, a baby girl was born to Henry and Désirée Ball. The father was a lineman for Bell Telephone and a member of the Baptist church. The family’s ancestors could be traced back to the earliest settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. When Lucille was four years old, her father died, and her mother worked several jobs, so Lucille and her younger brother, Fred, were raised by their grandparents. In 1926, Lucille enrolled in a school for the dramatic arts in New York City, and her career began. She started as a model and then made her way to Hollywood in the early 1930s to seek acting opportunities. She appeared in more than 80 movies during her lifetime, but she is best known for the television sitcom I Love Lucy, created by Lucille and her husband, Desi Arnaz, in 1951. It ran for six seasons, including 180 episodes, and won five Emmy Awards. Despite the fame and international recognition that made her a truly iconic figure of the silver screen and television, Lucille Ball encountered heartache and disappointment throughout her life.

Zeno was a Greek philosopher living around 450 BCE. He is best known for his four paradoxes through which he concluded that motion was impossible. How his arguments were constructed and why these were even proposed is the subject of this talk. We’ll also look at the reactions to his arguments from his contemporaries, from the Jesuits, and up to today. Math skills are not required.

Vincent van Gogh: Images, Influences & Thoughts
Yet, writings by artists convey a specific type of knowledge or way of thinking about art that writings of academics and professional observers do not. To make that point, I will share three artists with you. All three painted and wrote. Their writings reflect their individual feelings about their art, the works of others, and their innermost thoughts.
During the Renaissance in Europe, artists and sculptors held rank with nobles and sophisticated scholars. Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci were avid writers. Peter Paul Rubens spoke five languages and traveled in the best of company. With time, and certainly in the last century, those of creative genius evolved into being considered anti-intellectual by society. The artist community was not esteemed for anything but their final outputs.

Wednesday, October 12 Left to himself most of his life, Vincent van Gogh wrote to convey his thoughts, to validate his existence, and to communicate with others. He hoped they would read his words. His paintings followed that same path. He painted to bring his impressions of his world to others, to give them happiness, to make them feel important. With little formal training, Vincent relied on the works of other artists for his training. He felt working from paintings hanging on the walls in the asylum during his stay at St. Remy brought him closer to the actual artists. He often wrote to his brother, Theo, about the work he was doing, as well as the surroundings in which he existed, and his musings on life. Knowing what Vincent thought opens the door to a deeper understanding of who he really was.

Pierre Bonnard: Bold, Colorful & Inspiring Wednesday, October 19
Pierre Bonnard loved color and boldness — especially red — and he loved to be inspired by his surroundings. His works and writings reflect who shared his life, where he lived, and how he felt about his life and creating. Younger than many of the Impressionists, he latched on to their understandings of color and composition and imagery. This lecture shows you exactly how he did that and how, from the inspirations of others, he became a truly unique inspiration himself. He unknowingly led the way for the modernists of the later 20th and now the 21st century.

Charles Burchfield might not be an artist’s name that quickly comes to mind when considering American art in the mid-20th century, but he captured amazing insights on his canvases. By age 17, he had filled nearly two dozen notebooks with his thoughts, sketches, and image details. He was truly a genius who marched to his own drumbeat and brought enchanting images and thoughts to our world. Hopefully you will enjoy your time learning about him with me!

For centuries, the planet Mars has been regarded as a possible abode for life. Serious searches for bio-signatures began in the 19th century, and continue today via telescopic investigations and through orbiting and landed missions. While early work bordered on fantasy, modern scientific inquiry emphasizes the search for chemical signatures of life in the soil and rocks at the planet’s surface, and the search for biomarker gases in the atmosphere — especially methane. In this talk, we will discuss experiments conducted by landed spacecraft, ranging from the Viking Life Science Experiments in 1976 to the current Curiosity and Perseverance rovers. We will also touch on the types of terrestrial organisms that could prosper on Mars today.

On September 6, 1992, three moose hunters made their way through the Alaska woods near Denali National Park. They came upon the rusty frame of a city bus with the writing “Fairbanks City Transit System,” which was used as shelter for hikers and hunters. Inside the bus, they found the decaying body of 24-year-old Christopher McCandless. The discovery prompted many questions about this young man, leading to a top-selling book by Jon Krakauer entitled Into the Wild. In 2007, it was followed by a movie of the same name starring Emile Hirsch. Who was Christopher McCandless? And why this great curiosity on the part of many people, resulting in the rusted bus being relocated to the Museum of the North, a portion of the University of Alaska? Come to experience a fascinating adventure.

An earlier presentation — The Curie Women: Marie, Irène, Ève — described the works of a famous mother (Marie) and her well-known daughters. This presentation is a more detailed account of the mother’s life and work. Marie Skłodowska-Curie was the first person to receive two Nobel Prizes, and the only to be awarded two of the prizes in different sciences — physics and chemistry. Born in Warsaw, Poland, she graduated with honors from the Sorbonne in Paris — two master’s degrees (mathematics and physics) and a doctorate with distinction in physics, the first woman doctorate in a physical science from that institution. The latter work and its related research brought her to Stockholm twice for the Nobel Prize ceremonies. This presentation describes Marie Curie’s personal life and professional career, each replete with triumph and sorrow. The scope of her work in the laboratory and in service to France will be considered. Although her research and outreach made her an international celebrity, she did not seek the limelight. Albert Einstein, a treasured colleague, said of her, “Marie Curie is, of all celebrated beings, the only one whom fame has not corrupted.”

Many of us can determine the approximate age of 20th century photographs based on clothing, hairstyles, and other identifying clues, but we find 19th century photographs to be a mystery. Primarily, this is because we are unfamiliar with the many different types of photographs — daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, cartes de visite, and cabinet cards — used during the early decades of photography, as well as the clothing and hairstyles of that era. In this program, you will learn simple ways to date and identify early photographs, as well as the styles of clothing worn during each decade. This will allow you to narrow the date of a photograph to a very few years, which will also help to identify the people in the pictures.

We’ll begin with a discussion of the different target areas, rules, and characteristics of the foil, épée, and sabre. You’ll learn and practice the on-guard stance and how to advance, retreat, and lunge; how to hold the foil and make touches using the basic attacks — thrusts, disengages, ripostes, and beats; and the basic foil parries used to defend the four areas of the target. You’ll also see how fencing differs from theatrical sword fighting and experience why it’s often called physical chess. There will be individual drills, exercises with other students, and special one-on-one practice with the instructor.
