Enjoy an upbeat musical tour of 1960s and ’70s folk and pop with William Florian, a singer-songwriter and entertainer known around the world. He'll perform songs by Peter, Paul & Mary, Neil Diamond, Pete Seeger, The Mamas and The Papas, and others, including some from his time as lead singer of The New Christy Minstrels. William’s amazing musical journey started at age 11, when he received his first guitar after watching The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. His road to fame is as much a lyrical journey as the songs he performs, and this type of wandering is exactly how he entertains during Those Were the Days. During an evening with William, you can expect a perfect combination of musician and storyteller, blending wonderful music with humor and memoir.

Fabio Luisi Conducts Beethoven, Strauss & Schoenberg with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra
Antony Hermus Conducts Galaxymphony: Music from Sci-Fi Cinema
Take a journey through Romantic music with Fabio Luisi and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. The somber low notes of Verklärte Nacht open the performance, expressing the pathos of a young Schoenberg. Strauss’s Horn Concerto No. 1 follows, outstandingly executed by Lasse Mauritzen, the symphony’s principal horn player. The evening concludes with a volcanic rendition of Beethoven’s Seventh, a piece embodying the musical elements that would inspire and define Romantic music for most of the 19th century.
The legendary soundtracks of your favorite sci-fi classics are getting a grand orchestral treatment. Join the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Antony Hermus, for a voyage through selections from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Aliens, Avatar, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, and Star Wars. Voiceover work by David Bateson, Agent 47 in the Hitman series, plus vocals from Jihye Kim and the Hymnia and Camerata chamber choirs, round out the cast capturing the sci-fi spirit for the symphony hall!

Remembering & Honoring Decoration Day was established after the Civil War to honor those who had died in American wars. After World War II, it gradually became known as Memorial Day, declared the official name by federal law in 1967. This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor Missing in Action (MIA) veterans of all of our wars, including Captain Gene A. Culbertson, United States Air Force, the father of our friend and fellow Resident Susan Culbertson. Captain Culbertson and a crew of three, assigned to the 37th Bombardment Group from the Pusan Air Force Base in Korea, were shot down on February 23, 1953, on a low-altitude bombing run targeting the enemy supply line known as Black 16. They never returned. We will also remember the tradition of setting a table in honor of our prisoners of war and missing comrades, in place since the Vietnam War. The table is decorated with special symbols to help us remember our brothers and sisters in arms. Please join us as we discuss these symbols and honor the memory of Captain Culbertson and all of America’s MIAs. Art Gallery Willow Valley Quilt Guild It has been said that quilting is the art of stitching little pieces of yourself — your heart, soul, talent, and vision — using threads of love and beautiful fabric. The process of creating a quilt involves several steps, including designing, piecing, appliqué, quilting, and binding. When the quilt top is complete and layered with batting and backing, the actual quilting can be done by hand, with a sewing machine, or by using a specialized longarm quilting system. The Willow Valley Quilt Guild was formed in 2008 by 20 Residents who shared a love of quilting. Today, it has more than 60 members, ranging from beginners to expert quilters, who continue to hone their skills through instructional programs, lectures, and workshops. They also volunteer to make lap quilts and walker bags for Supportive Living Residents at Willow Valley, as well as charity quilts and place mats for the Lancaster community. This display of quilted wall hangings made by Guild members is as varied as the quilters themselves. We hope you enjoy seeing the different techniques each quilter incorporated into these one-of-a-kind creations. June 20 – July 29 Cultural Center Art Gallery

LIFE OF THE MIND
Life of the Mind Socrates Café Socrates Café encourages spirited discussion about issues and topics that challenge our beliefs about contemporary society and who we are as human beings. Our quest is not to arrive at answers or consensus but rather to develop more and better questions. We seek clarification of our own thinking, and careful and respectful consideration of the views of others, as we sift through, sort out, and attempt to arrive at new insights into the topics under discussion. So if you enjoy thinking about and questioning commonly accepted assumptions, even your own, and if you are willing to challenge the taken-for-granted authority of any position or representation of fact or truth, join us at Socrates Café. Socrates Café meets in the Cultural Center Education Room on the second Monday of each month, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
“We are concerned with how to think, not what to think, how to keep our minds active and fully functioning throughout our lives.”

Quad Alliance
Drug Policy in Latin America
As part of its pivot to Asia, the United States has been in dialogue with Japan, Australia, and India in an effort to contain China. Recently, the Quad countries held joint naval exercises in the South Pacific. How effective will the actions of this alliance be?
The issue of migration to the United States from Latin America has overshadowed the War on Drugs, now underway for decades with little signs of progress. What are the roots and logic of today’s drug policies in Latin America? Is it time to reconsider punitive policies that disrupt supply chains and punish drug possession?

Henry Ford: Genius of Mass Production
Daniel Breen | Brandeis University
Henry Ford may have been the most influential and infuriating of all of America’s industrial geniuses. No one did more to bring about the mass consumer economy of the modern United States, with its continuing reliance on the automobile. Yet Ford combined his visionary impulses with an intense nostalgia for the rural past (a past his own innovations helped consign to oblivion) and a truly awful commitment to anti-Semitism. Who, really, was Henry Ford? In this presentation, we’ll try to address that question by delving into the contributions and complexities of this peculiar American genius.

The Statue of Liberty: The Full (Little-Known) Story The Statue of Liberty is an icon, a national treasure, and one of the most recognizable figures in the world. Each year, millions make the journey to experience its history and grandeur in person. Most see the statue as a symbol of freedom, inspiration, and hope for successive waves of immigrants — but they might be shocked to learn that it originally had nothing to do with immigration. It was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States to commemorate the centennials of the American (1776) and French (1789) Revolutions, as well as to celebrate the relationship between the two countries. Historian Edward O’Donnell will tell the story of how French reformer Édouard de Laboulaye conceived of the idea, how sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi created the structure, and how it almost ended up somewhere other than New York Harbor. Along the way, he’ll explain how the statue gradually transformed into an immigration icon and a very powerful and pliable political symbol.
Edward O’Donnell College of the Holy Cross Professor Edward O’Donnell teaches history at the College of the Holy Cross. He is the author of several books, including Henry George and the Crisis of Inequality: Progress and Poverty in the Gilded Age. He often contributes op-eds to publications like Newsweek and The Huffington Post, and has been featured on PBS, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, and C-SPAN. O’Donnell has curated several major museum exhibits on American history and appeared in historical documentaries. He currently hosts a history podcast, In the Past Lane. Beyond Chocolate & Vanilla: The Delicious History of Ice Cream In the 16th century, alchemists discovered how to lower the freezing temperature of water to zero degrees. Less than a century later, chefs were using the technique to create the world’s favorite dessert: ice cream! This talk will look at its fascinating history, science, and social impact. Culinary historian Sarah Lohman will tell the stories of classic — and not so classic — ice cream flavors, from chocolate and vanilla to ambergris and brown bread. She’ll talk about what gives ice cream its softness, as well as the role of ice cream parlors in 19th century feminism. You’ll learn which came first, the ice cream sandwich or the ice cream cone, and the surprisingly old origin of Dippin’ Dots, “the ice cream of the future.” Top off the afternoon by enjoying a scoop of ice cream after the program!
Sarah Lohman | Culinary Historian Sarah Lohman is the author of the best-selling book Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine. As a culinary historian, she focuses on the history of food as a way to access the stories of diverse Americans. Her work has been featured in both The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, as well as on the Cooking Channel and All Things Considered. The Epic Story of the American Railroad The Roman Colosseum: The Building & The Grand Spectacles Join Professor Andrew Kranis from Rome for a virtual tour of the 1st century gladiatorial amphitheater built to entertain, intimidate, and flatter the Roman people for more than five centuries. Examine its site within the ancient city, its cutting-edge architectural features, and its role as Italy’s unofficial logo. As the most ambitious and technologically complex structure ever constructed for pure blood sport, it stands as the world’s most enduring example of “negative heritage” while setting the standard for the Las Vegas and Broadway-style stagecraft and spectacle we see today.

Railroads made America. By the time the country entered World War I, it had 254,000 route miles of railway. Early lines allowed the spread of people and industry, with the Transcontinental linking the East and West Coasts by speedy transport for the first time. Road or sea trips that once took months could now be taken by train in days. Railways had stimulated the rapid growth in the second half of the 19th century, by which time they had become the biggest companies in the land — and their owners, like JP Morgan, Vanderbilt, and Edward Harriman, were among its richest men. Sadly, America abandoned most of its passenger railways in the immediate postwar period, greatly increasing its reliance on road transport, a trend that many states are now hoping to reverse.

Andrew Bliss: Turning Chance into Structure — The Necessity of Mentorship in Youth
Vincent Carson: The Power of Genetic Diagnosis
A chance meeting resulted in Andrew, then a student at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, collaborating with a doctor to create a knee brace that went on to receive a patent. He found the experience invaluable, so he created STEM Pioneers, a mentorship program that brings together mentors and mentees to foster these collaborations rather than having them happen by chance. His talk is a blueprint for how to make that happen in schools across the country.
Vincent serves as Clinical Operations Director of the world-renowned Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg. His talk is about the importance of genetic testing and how it is dramatically changing the treatment of patients. The clinic is already using it to make great strides in the patients they treat, and with the cost of genetic testing decreasing, it will become the norm…if healthcare professionals are open to learning about it and adopting it as protocol.

Dr. Alexia McKnight: Tech-Savvy Tips to Revolutionize Your Health Dr. McKnight was a normal, healthy individual until her health took a sudden and dramatic turn for the worse. She even remembers the day it all started: when the electric company replaced her analog electric meter with a new smart meter. Through investigative work and research, she determined that the radiation from smart meters, Wi-Fi, cell phones, and other wireless devices was the cause of her debilitating state, known as Havana Syndrome. In her talk, she'll explain how to minimize the negative impact of technological devices.
Will Kiefer & Nate Luvice: Want Generational Change? Share Your Network Nate was a kid from the streets of Lancaster with few advantages. After being shot while committing a robbery, he knew he needed to make a major life change. Nate contacted Will, founder of Bench Mark Program, and it changed his life. Now Nate talks to “street kids” about how the proper network can change their lives, and Will talks to professionals about sharing their network with kids like Nate. Their talk focuses on the power of this type of networking.
Eric Sauder: We’re Trying to Solve the Climate Crisis at the Wrong Scale Eric is the founder of RegenAll, a Lancaster-based nonprofit that addresses climate change initiatives at the local level. Although national and global climate change initiatives are taking place, often there is no follow-through (for example, the Paris Accord). His approach is to implement climate change strategies on a local level. He works with many local farmers and says rural communities are the key to shifting toward large-scale climate change.

Gail Scott: Big Pharma & the Overdose Crisis — How I Went from Drug Rep to Whistleblower Gail was a pharmaceutical rep who saw inconsistencies in how addictive drugs were marketed and prescribed. She noticed that doctors and drug companies were conspiring to overly prescribe these drugs and keep people on them for as long as possible, all in the name of profit. But when she voiced her concerns, they were ignored. Gail ended up becoming a whistleblower for the US Department of Justice in a record-setting civil and criminal case against an addictive medicine manufacturer.
Matthew Woodson: Cultivating the Power of Music As Director of Community Percussion for local nonprofit Music for Everyone, Matthew instructs students from the School District of Lancaster and facilitates group drumming events and programs throughout the community. In this talk, he shares how his work empowers others to pursue music in a way that helps them gain people skills, break down barriers in order to strengthen unity, and provide a place where they feel safe to grow. He will also perform on the steel pan.
Tracie Young: A Wildlife Rehabilitator’s Plea to Those Who Hunt & Fish Tracie is Founder, Director, and Wildlife Rehabilitator of Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in Washington Boro. While many lead-based products have been banned, lead shot and fishing weights continue to poison animals, pollute water and soil, and contaminate our food supply. Tracie’s goal is to educate sportsmen on the dangers of these lead-based products. While many people don’t think lead affects them, she points to common health issues that may be caused by lead.

Lunch & Learn: Harrisburg’s Artistic Treasure, Violet Oakley In 1897, the State Capitol Building in Harrisburg burned to the ground, and Joseph Miller Huston was hired soon after to design a new structure. He called his creation a “Palace of Art” and hired numerous men to create murals, sculptures, stained glass, and mosaic tiled floors. Soon after construction was underway, the man in charge of murals, Edwin Abbey, died, and Huston made an unthinkable decision. He hired a young, talented female artist from the Philadelphia area, Violet Oakley, who ultimately designed the grand, vivid murals in the Governor’s Reception Room, the State Senate, and the State Supreme Court Chamber. Learn about Oakley and take a PowerPoint tour within the capitol walls, exploring her wonderful artistic treasures.
