Bountiful Harvest:
The Real World of John Alden and Pricilla Mullins During the Age of Exploration, men and women came to the new land to extract various natural resources ranging from gold and silver to animal hides. However when the English settled the east coast of present United States, they came to stay here and form a new community. Such was the case of the settlers at Plymouth Plantation. Every Thanksgiving Day, we have a visual concept of the early Pilgrims sitting down with the Native Americans and enjoying a wonderful feast in peace and harmony. But is that really the picture? Come and hear actual facts which might put a new perspective on a wonderful American holiday. After the lecture enjoy a light luncheon including a sampling of finger foods made especially for a taste of the first Thanksgiving. Sakari Oramo Conducts Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius – with Joshua Bell Length: 1 hour 31 minutes Violinist Joshua Bell and Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo join forces with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, opening with Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3. Beethoven composed only one opera but revised it several times, the third one, performed here, is assuredly the most popular. Combining a classic shape with a Romantic ethos, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 is performed by the “poet of the violin” Joshua Bell. Concluding with Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 82, written during one of the darkest times in European history, shows a certain optimism, as the composer himself confessed in his diary. SEPT 23 Tuesday, 2:00 p.m. 12 FALL 2014
The Merry Widow Length: 2 hours 15 minutes A captivating production from the Zurich Opera House of Franz Lehar’s masterwork is brought to life by director Helmut Lohner. The opulent set provides the ambience for elegant costumes, mixing traditional and Parisian evening attire, while the handsome pairing of Dagmar Schellenberger (Hanna Glawari) and Rodney Gilfry (Count Danilo Danilowitsch) provides a wonderful tongue-in-cheek portrayal of the widow and her suitor. The Zurich Opera Chorus and Orchestra along with Franz Welser-Most guide us through Lehar’s music. A hint of nostalgia arises in watching the swirling waltz and dizzying celebrations that remind us of the final splendor of the 19th century. Sung in German with no subtitles. OCT 9 Thursday, 2:00 p.m.
Riccardo Chailly Conducts Medelssohn Length: 1 hour 33 minutes Riccardo Chailly shines at his inaugural concert as Kapellmeister of one of the world’s most renowned orchestras, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. The concert includes performances of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Symphony No. 2 “Lobgesang” with its celebratory choral last movement, featuring outstanding soloists Anne Schwanewilms and Petra-Maria Schnitzer (sopranos) and Peter Seiffert (tenor). Sung in German with no subtitles. OCT 31 Friday, 10:00 a.m.
Lohengrin
Vladimir Jurowski Conducts Wagner, Berg and Mahler
Runtime: 3 hours 26 minutes; A light lunch will be served during intermission in the Art Gallery. You must register for this event. Cost: $12/person (includes webcast plus lunch)
Making his first appearance as the musical director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra is Russian conductor Vladimir Jurowski. Jurowski was born a child of the concert hall. He learned about music at the opera, illustrated by his way with Wagner’s prelude to Parsifal followed by Three Orchestral Pieces by Berg which come alive with rich playing and mellow surround sound. Mahler’s cantata Das Klagende Lied “Song of Lamentation” feature outstanding soloists.
With powerful conviction, Nikolaus Lehnhoff interprets Wagner’s Lohengrin as the dramatic struggle of masculine and feminine, revenge and compassion. Powerfully acted and musically of the highest order, this Lohengrin from the Festspielhaus in Baden-Baden will be a benchmark production for decades. With his extraordinarily transparent interpretation, Klaus Florian Vogt (Lohengrin) leads an inspired cast to visionary realms that are rarely touched as they are in this deeply moving theatrical experience with the chorus of the Opéra National de Lyon and the Deutsches SymphonieOrchester Berlin, and musical direction by Kent Nagano.
Sung in German with English subtitles.

Cinderella Length: 2 hour 5 minutes Rudolf Nureyev’s colorful, cinematicdream version of Prokofiev’s Cinderella retains the classic Perrault story but sets it in America during the difficult years of the Great Depression. A young Cinderella (Agnes Letestu) victimized by a morbid family, wishes to escape the oppressive world in which she evolves. One day, her kindness is rewarded: while she runs to help a person in need (Jose Martinez), she changes her destiny forever. This character, who embodies the fairy in Perrault’s tale, is a Hollywood producer... And this is how Nureyev turns the film star into a modern prince charming. The production presents great challenges for the dancers who perform flawlessly. DEC 9 Tuesday, 2:00 p.m.

Art Gallery Doris Sams Doris Sams, Manor Resident, began her career in the 1970s as an artist working in stone sculpture. A graduate of Kutztown University, she did graduate work at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, and studied at the Barnes Foundation. A trip to Sem Ghelardini in Italy helped to perfect her carving skills. Sept 24 – Nov 3

Jonathan Frazier Jonathan Frazier, a graduate of Kutztown University with a BFA, paints vibrantly colored landscapes of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the nearby Susquehanna River. He is a plein air painter, typically beginning his paintings in the field with his oldfashioned wooden easel, later returning to his studio to further interpret the subject, without photographs; allowing his imagination to play on the canvas. Residing on the banks of the Susquehanna River, many of his paintings are close to home but he also captures the beauty of places such as the headwaters of the river at Otsego Lake, the mountains of the Appalachian Range, and especially Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park, featuring valleys with their patchwork of fields, forests, and waterways. Life of the Mind Socrates Café “The difficulty lies not in grasping the new ideas, but rather in escaping from the old ones.” ~ John Maynard Keynes
Socrates Café encourages spirited discussion about issues and topics that challenge our beliefs about contemporary society and who we are as human beings. Our quest is not to arrive at answers or consensus but rather to develop more and better questions. We seek clarification of our own thinking and careful, respectful consideration of the views of others as we of sift through, sort out, and attempt to arrive at new insights into the topics under discussion. So if you enjoy thinking about and questioning commonly accepted assumptions - even your own - if you are willing to challenge the taken-for-granted authority of any position or representation of fact or truth, join us at Socrates Café.
