PATHWAYS: The Barn Quilt at Willow Valley Communities Barn Quilt Unveiling and Exhibition

S

ince 2001, “barn quilts” – quilt block designs painted on wood or metal – have appeared on barns across the United States. Suzi Parron, author of two books on this interesting topic, spoke to the members of the Willow Valley Quilt Guild in April 2016. Inspired by her presentation, the guild members began the work to create a barn quilt design to be placed on one of our barns at Willow Valley. The Willow Valley Quilt Guild members chose a quilt block called “Pathways” for the barn quilt design. The design features a traditional star with small blocks converging on a center square – a visual metaphor for the many paths residents have taken to come to Willow Valley and the paths they continue to follow here. After months of work, the barn quilt is finished and installed on the barn across from the Mylin House. The quilt will be unveiled at a special event on Friday, September 29. The day begins with Suzi Parron’s story about barn quilt trails she has discovered while traveling across the country. You will be fascinated and enlightened as Suzi shows photos of many of the barn quilts she has seen and tells the story behind each barn quilt.

Ivan Fischer Conducts Liszt and Wagner with Petra Lang Length: 1 hour 26 minutes The Budapest Festival Orchestra, under the baton of Iván Fischer at the Salle Pleyel. Mezzo-soprano Petra Lang performs excerpts from Wagner’s Twilight of the Gods in a program devoted to German mythology, with Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No. 1, whose theme refers to the legendary characters Faust and Mephistopheles. The concert appears like a travel through musical stories in Wagner’s masterpieces: the orchestra performs the Tannhäuser’s Overture and Bacchanale, followed by the Prelude of The Mastersingers of Nuremberg on a score highlighting the motives of his opera, from Walther’s song to Sachs’s dreams. Finally, the three extracts of the Twilight of the Gods, with Petra Lang. SEPT 13 Wednesday, 1:30 p.m.

Il Volo with Plácido Domingo: Notte Magica Length: 1 hour 45 minutes After winning over the global public on their tour through Europe, the U.S., and South America, Il Volo marks their return to Italy for a magical night of music, paying tribute to another famous trio, The Three Tenors. Una Notte Magica was the name of the legendary concert performed in 1990 by three tenors — José Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti — and now, 27 years later, Il Volo visits Florence to commemorate them. This unique tribute takes place in Piazza Santa Croce, accompanied by the great Teatro Massimo di Palermo Orchestra and with Plácido Domingo himself as a special guest conductor.

Exhibition On Film, Rossini’s Barber Renoir: Revered of Seville Length: 2 hour 47 minutes and Reviled Length: 1 hour 30 minutes

Sung in Italian with English subtitles.

Simon Rattle and Daniel Barenboim Play Brahms Length: 1 hour 42 minutes

Pierre-Auguste Renoir is known and loved for his impressionist paintings of Paris. Renoir, however, grew tired of this style and changed course. This stunning film – based on the remarkable collection of 181 Renoirs at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia – examines the direction he then took and why it provokes such extreme reactions today. Among the many artists who sought Renoir’s new works and were clearly highly influenced by them were the two giants of the 20th century – Picasso and Matisse. The film is a fresh biography of this artistic giant but also uncovers a rarely told story that places Renoir as a critical link between the old and the new.

At dawn Lindoro and a band of street musicians are serenading the window of Rosina. Figaro, the Barber of Seville, arrives and recognizes his former master in disguise: Count Almaviva. Almaviva fell in love with Rosina and explains he wants to seduce her with his qualities and not with his money. The cunning Figaro is here to help Count Almaviva get inside the doctor’s house who keeps Rosina locked in, in order to marry her.

A magic setting: the Herod Atticus Odeon in Athens. An exceptional line-up: Simon Rattle conducting, Daniel Barenboim on piano and the Berliner Philharmoniker. An irresistible program: Brahms’ First Piano Concerto and First Piano Quartet in an orchestral arrangement by Schoenberg. Perfectly mastered, as one might expect given the quality of the protagonists, the Brahms concerto was remarkable in finesse and sensitivity, particularly in the Adagio. As for the orchestral version of the First Quartet with Piano, it made it possible for all the sections of the orchestra to shine, especially the woodwinds. A real delight.

Ross Sachs “The guidance of few, influence from many, the persistence to improve and the gift from above have influenced my work along my path. It continues to be a meandering path with wonderful stories along the way.” As an early student of art at Franklin & Marshall College and Millersville University, art began with calligraphy for Ross Sachs. The use of angles and lines of ink led to shadows and shading with line. Tone from line lead to shading with airbrush. The airbrush took him into automobile hood designs and van murals. Airbrush eventually led to topographical maps. Maps led to illustrations and meeting some of the best illustrators in the business. Ultimately, this led him to collecting original illustration. Holding and carefully studying originals led him back to the beginning. That beginning was adding tone after tone to a surface which became the finished art, but in reverse. Ross’s paintings are all “painted” in a method that actually involves the removal of the paint: first, applying oil paint and then using paper towels to remove it. Ross’s sole intent is to capture the mood of light and the feelings from a moment. SEPT 7 – OCT 19

FALL 2017

Dot Stepenaski Dot Stepenaski grew up in Conshohocken and now resides in Lancaster County. She always had an interest in how things worked and was an avid tomboy, preferring the outdoors. She developed an interest in drawing at an early age. In her sophomore year of high school, she attended Archbishop Kennedy High where art was treated as a major for the first time. Under the tutelage of Florence Collins, drawing and painting were as natural to her as breathing. Discouraged from attending college, she worked a few years but later decided to attend evening classes to pursue her love of painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Philadelphia College of Art. Dot put aside her painting studies while raising a family, but painted in watercolors when opportunities presented themselves. After moving to Lancaster in 1993, Dot became an active member of the Lancaster County Art Association. Frustrated with her medium, watercolor, she decided to experiment with pastels. She enjoys working in pastels because it is a very tactile medium and responds well to painting sensitively as well as energetically. Her favorite subjects to paint are landscapes and portraits. OCT 20 – NOV 29 She is a Signature Member of the Maryland Pastel Pastel Society. She has attended significant workshops with Maggie Price, Richard www.stepenaski.com McKinley, Albert Handell, and many others. Recently, Dot has begun teaching pastels and enjoys the give-and-take with students, and seeing them connect with their work.

John Swanson A versatile artist in pen & ink and watercolor, John Swanson, Lakes Resident, has won many awards in both mediums. A retired graphic art supervisor, John now devotes his time to painting and teaching. His work is seen in many private collections throughout the U.S., Canada, Bermuda, and Europe, as well as in art shows from Maine to Florida. His education includes Newark School of Industrial and Fine Arts, the A.L.A. School of Lithography, NYC, and Fairleigh Dickinson University, NJ. As an avid traveler, John often captures many subjects with his photographic memory or camera for reference, being aware of God’s beauty that surrounds us.

Remembering the Greatest Show on Earth In May 2017 the curtain came down on “the greatest show on earth” - the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Take a nostalgic look back at Ringling’s 146-year history. Born out of P.T. Barnum’s traveling “menagerie and museum,” the circus went on to thrill generations of Americans with a three-ring mix of crazy clowns, daredevil acrobats, and performing jungle beasts. Laid low by high costs and changing public tastes, the vanishing world under the “big top” lives on in some of our fondest childhood memories. By producing the first atomic bombs used in warfare, those dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Manhattan Project changed the course of history and the world’s geopolitical landscape. Learn the main events and people, such as Dr. Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves, associated with the Manhattan Project from its conception and inception through to the military use of the atomic bombs, the first on August 6, 1945. Missionary Moments and Miracles in Russia Meet the Russian people and learn about their hopes, health, and dreams from the end of the Cold War through the beginning of the 21st century through the lens of a missionary. In 1989, Terry Webb traveled for the first time to the former Soviet Union on a peace-making journey. Evidence, Impact, and Mitigation of Climate Change All temperature reconstructions show that Earth has warmed. The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass. Global sea level has risen about 6.7 inches in the last century, and in the last decade, the rate has nearly doubled. Alpine glaciers in the world are retreating in many locations including in the Alps, Rockies, and Alaska, and since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by 30 percent. These are just some of the examples of climate change. What are we going to do about it? This talk will present the evidence, impacts, and discuss some of the mitigation strategies surrounding the politically sensitive topic of climate change. Wednesday, October 25 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Cultural Center Education Room Presenter: Richard Clark, Ph.D. Cost: no charge

Prospects for Avoiding Dangerous Climate Change Beginning with an overview of the enormity and speed of greenhouse gas reductions now necessary to prevent dangerous climate change, this lecture will identify what is required of governments under the Paris Agreement to prevent dangerous climate change and what is being done so far. We’ll discuss what hope this agreement gives to nations that will significantly increase their stated commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Assess the effects our current government’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, and identify recent developments which give some hope of achieving the Paris Agreement’s warming limit goals of 1.5°C to 2.0°C. Seeking Authenticity and Peace Loss reshapes our souls. When Janet Brady Calhoun lost her mother and sister within a seven-month period, she turned inward to mourn, to heal, and to find herself. Rabbit Warrior: a Cape Cod Pilgrimage of Healing and SelfDiscovery is a captivating memoir of a transformative journey of renewal and discovery. As Janet contemplated the meaning of life and death, the Cape’s wildlife “spoke” to her of change and evolution, pain and suffering, death and dying. She explores the complexities of the motherdaughter relationship, of marital challenges, of bulimia and family therapy, of saying goodbye to those we love, of struggling to find The Light. **Books will be available for purchase after the presentation. Book Review: Mayflower The holiday of Thanksgiving is regarded by many people as a very special day emphasizing family, friends, good food, and thankfulness for our many blessings. Two of them lived just a couple of miles from what was to become Willow Valley, the other on the western side of Lancaster. Plate Tectonics & Mountain Building Did you know that North and South America once fit snugly against Europe? There is proof that they were together, but science could not figure out how they could drift. Spreading at the mid-ocean ridge is the cause of this. As the Atlantic Ocean gets bigger, we know the planet is not expanding, so how is this happening? Scientists have discovered the subduction zones. Dispatched throughout the United States by the Farm Security Administration, these three were among the most noted photographers of their generation. Their mission was to document the rural poor, the deplorable state of much of our farmland, the plight of those who were living in migrant camps in California, and anything else they found and felt should be preserved in the public memory. In carrying out their mission, they created a standard for documentary photography that has seldom been equaled.
