Her knowledge and experience with traditional techniques developed from the foundational skills she learned in the fine art program as well as experiencing art in major metropolitan cities, such as New York City and Washington, DC. Katherine currently works with experimental forms such as mixed media collage. She sees the toned paper and found scraps as brush marks on her surface. The variety of weight and texture in her papers adds depth to the landscapes she forms on the layered surfaces. There is a lot of freedom in the genre of collage, and she looks forward to her ever-changing process. JAN 21 – MAR 10

Life on the Edge of the World: The Westfjords of Iceland Between June 2008 and October 2010, Matt Willen made 9 trips to the Westfjords of Iceland to document the nature of life in this remote corner of the world. Located in the extreme northwest of Iceland, the Westfjords (an area about the size of Rhode Island) is home to about 7,300 people who live in a dozen small communities situated on the edge of the Arctic Ocean and the Greenland Strait. The landscape is stunning, the climate harsh, and compared to life in the United States, life is not easy. Yet the people there live rather full and enjoyable lives. Through photographs, stories, music, and some factual discussion of the region, Willen explores the nature of life in the area, its natural history, economy and social structure; and discusses how people live so well on comparatively little. Wednesday, March 26 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Presenter: Matt Willen, Professor, English Department, Elizabethtown College
