SUMMER 2014

Joseph Dudding Joseph Dudding is a painter of people, places and things. His works whisper quietly and invite the viewer to relax and experience a little peace and beauty. Though realism never really lost popularity, it has been over-shadowed by experimental, non-representational art during this century. However, over the past few years, realism has begun a quiet but steady resurgence into the mainstream of contemporary art. Joseph considers himself a “non-apologetic” realist who is fervently devoted to promoting the academic or classical approach to impeccable draughtsmanship as a foundation for creating exciting and highquality paintings. Susan J. Gottlieb Susan J. Gottlieb is a multi-media painter whose art is infused with exotic flavors, vibrant colors, and captivating tales of international travel. As a student and teacher of World Culture, Studio Arts, and Art History, her inspiration comes from completely immersing herself in a country’s people, symbols and heritage. Happiest as a solo traveler, she has lived and studied in Rome, Italy and continues to travel extensively for her own studies. She shows in central and south eastern Pennsylvania, Charleston, South Carolina, and Colorado. Locally, she regularly exhibits at Red Raven Art Gallery, and is a long time member of the Echo Valley Art Group. AUG 5 – SEP 22

Life of the Mind “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” ~Aristotle Socrates Café Socrates Café encourages spirited discussion about issues and topics that challenge our beliefs on contemporary society and who we are as human beings. Our quest is not to arrive at answers or consensus, but rather to develop more and better questions. We seek clarification of our own thinking and careful and respectful consideration of the views of others as we sift through, sort out, and attempt to arrive at new insights into the topics under discussion.

Self-Deception Is some degree of self-deception healthy, perhaps necessary, for humans and other animals?

Communication in a Technological Age Are we becoming a society that favors electronic over face-to-face, even voiceto-voice, communication?

Retail Therapy Is shopping, especially for “those of a certain age,” more a means of satisfying social or psychological needs, rather than actual needs?

Income Inequality What are the primary causes of income inequality in this country? (accidents of birth, native ability, hard work, unfair practices, chance, etc.)

Socrates Café meets in the Cultural Center Ballroom on the second Monday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Poetry Circle Although the Poetry Circle will not meet during the summer months, we would like to invite Residents, especially those new to our communities, to consider attending our monthly meetings when we resume reading, discussing and sharing our responses to 20th and 21st century poetry in the fall. We also sponsor semi-annual public poetry readings in Willow Valley Communities. You do not need to write poetry or perform in the public readings to participate in the Poetry Circle. Our primary purpose is to enjoy and learn about some of the best contemporary poetry through lively and respectful dialogue. The group is fortunate to be led by Lakes Resident Mary Jean Irion, Founder and First Director of The Writers’ Center at Chautauqua, New York, whose own poetry has been published in prestigious poetry and literary magazines. Questions? Call Kay Vandergrift (464.4181) or Mary Jean Irion (464.8852).

Great Decisions Each year, the Foreign Policy Association publishes materials to be used by groups that wish to foster awareness and understanding of current world issues. Willow Valley Residents explore, discuss and debate these issues to broaden their perspectives and increase their knowledge and understanding of the larger world. Each session is led by a facilitator from the group. Topics are announced in advance to allow participants to think about, and possibly research, various issues in preparation for the discussions. The coordinators invite residents of all Willow Valley Communities to attend. From January through May, and September through November, the Great Decisions Group meets in the Spring Run Auditorium on the second Tuesday of the month at 2:00 p.m.
