What was once a largely vacant surface parking lot is now home to a 27 story mixed-use high-rise. Sited at 53rd Street & Cornell Avenue in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, 5252 Apartments offers residents the best of urban living - street level retail, close proximity to University of Chicago & METRA stations, and a vibrant rooftop amenity deck. Residents can share a meal under the pergola, swim in the lap pool, or enjoy a round of yard games on the artificial turf lawn.

Natural materials and interwoven matrices of perennial plantings elevate this space from a simple walkway to a calming main entry plaza at Halas Hall. Floral pops of orange and yellow stand out against the facade while natural granite blocks provide seating for tired players. A linear paving pattern is utilized to create rhythm and subtly guides visitors to building entrypoints. This design has recieved the 2020 ILCA Merit Award.

Layers of ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowering perennials bring color, texture, and movement to UCAN Chicago’s ‘Petria’s Place Healing Garden.’ Winding paths divide lush planting beds and provide resident youth room to wander, ponder, reflect, and find healing through reconnection with nature. Phased installation and continuous dialogue over four years allowed for residents to ease into the space and make it their own over time.

The Veterans Peace Garden represents a place of peace, tranquility and beauty for active military, retired veterans, and the South Austin Community. The main features of this garden are the tiered pergola for gathering, six bronze emblems displayed within the fence for branches of the armed forces, and a central flag pole. Local volunteers open the garden daily and maintain the space.

The Boeing Galleries serve as display space for temporary art installations. The design challenge here was to revitalize the landscape in a way that enhanced the exhibits without detracting from the art. Flower color was limited to white, and special attention was given to how seasonality, leaf texture, form, and green tones complimented each other to create an understated backdrop for this prominent public gallery.
