Bluesign Pioneers

Berghaus were the first British brand to join the bluesign system. If a product contains more than 90% bluesign approved fabrics it will achieve the MADEKIND™ label.

Recycled Materials

Berghaus have been using recycled materials in their products since the 70’s when their new Yeti gaiter, which incorporated old tractor inner tubes and set a new standard in foot protection.

Performance gear that’s kinder to the planet. Products marked with the MADEKIND™ label are eco-friendly and could contain recycled material, organic cotton, bio-based material from natural sources, or because they’re made by one of the brand’s sustainable partners.

Recycled Materials

TNF aims to use 100% responsibly sourced fabrics by 2025. They are reducing the amount of recycled plastic in polyester fabric, as well as helping to reduce dependence on fossil fuels by reusing those materials already in existence.

Responsible Down Standard

In 2014, they launched the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) in partnership with Textile Exchange, a global non-profit dedicated to sustainability in the apparel and textile industry, and Control Union Certifications.

Responsible Wool

More than 80% of wool TNF used in FY2020 was responsibly sourced, coming from either recycled or certified (including ZQ or RWS) sources. This figure is increasing year on year.

Packaging & Materials

TNF aims to eliminate single-use plastic packaging by 2025 and only use recycled content for all their paper materials, like hangtags and cardboard shipping boxes.

Green Buildings

TNF uses Green buildings to enable control of heating, air conditioning and lighting, along with access to green space and other key features. They have committed to utilising 100% renewable energy across their facilities by 2025.

Conservation Projects

TNF co-founds The Outdoor Industry Conservation Alliance with REI, Patagonia and Kelty. The group distributes its collective annual membership dues to grassroots organisations working to protect North America’s last wild places.

Scale Circularity

TNF have three specific programs designed to help combat waste and extend the life of their products through their Limited Lifetime Warranty program, Renewed Collection, and Clothes the Loop programs.

Work in Tandem

Recycled Synthetic Insulation

For AW20, Rab introduced PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation LuxeTM into their range. It uses post-consumer recycled materials to create high performance synthetic insulation that mimics down.

P.U.R.E. Recycled Down

In 2019, Rab introduced the world’s first Global Recycled Standard certified down and were an early adopter of the Responsible Down Standard. P.U.R.E. recycled down uses fewer resources to produce than virgin down, and prevents unnecessary waste.

Minimising Harmful Chemicals

Environmental harming Fluorocarbons are used in the outdoor industry to make DWRs. Rab is working to find a replacement that allows their products to perform to the highest standards.

Recycled Fabrics

Rab is swapping to recycled fibres where possible. In partnership with brands like Pertex® and GORE-TEX®, Rab is developing fabrics containing varying levels of recycled content that still perform to the highest level.

Green Offices

Rab are into their third year as a Climate Neutral Company and have set an aim to be Net Zero by 2030. They operate on 100% renewable electricity in their UK owned facilities.

Fair & Humane Animal Welfare

Rab only works with suppliers who source animal by-products from entities that use fair and humane animal welfare practices.

Minimising waste

Samples, repaired returns, discontinued fabrics, overstocked, or other unsaleable products are either: Resold in retail outlets, repurposed into new items, donated to charities, used for spare parts or disassembled for education/research.

Eco Packaging & Materials

Rab uses 50% recycled material polybags and have swapped to paper/cardboard packaging made from 100% recycled, sustainably sourced materials. They have reduced hangtag materials by 79% through introducing a QR code.

Helly Hansen has moved a lot of its linings and base layers to solution-dyed fabrics, this can save up to 30L of water per KG of textile.

Organic Cotton

At Helly Hansen, they’re moving to organic cotton where possible. Organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and can reduce water scarcity risks by 91%.

Recycled Fabrics

Montane works closely with their fabric suppliers to introduce the latest recycled materials where possible. Performance and longevity are at the heart of their designs, and where these are not compromised, they have integrated recycled fabrics from suppliers into their range.

Microfibres

Montane believes that committing to quality materials from reputable mills allows products to be as durable as possible, extending their lifespan and lowering their environmental impact by shedding fewer microfibres.

Animal Welfare

In 2015, Montane became the first brand to implement the Responsible Down Standard. The entire supply chain is inspected by independent, certification bodies annually to guarantee traceability and compliance.

PFC’s

Montane’s long-term goal is to completely eliminate PFCs from their supply chain and they are working with nominated partners who are trialling new chemistry and continue to monitor the alternatives as they emerge.

PVC & Phthalates

Phthalates have been linked to disrupting hormone levels as well as being a suspected carcinogen. For this reason, Montane only uses printing inks which are free from PVC and phthalates.

Organic Cotton

All of Montane’s cotton is sourced in India and their organic cotton t-shirts are made in a factory certified to SA8000 and GOTS.

Repair Service

If your Montane gear gets damaged, they will always aim to repair items with identical, or similar, materials and restore them to their original performance levels, reducing wastage.

Conservation Projects

As members of the EOCA, Craghoppers have been working with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and are committed to protecting the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda and the Grauer Gorillas in the Congo.

Packaging & Materials

Craghoppers have reduced product packaging by 50% and only use recycled materials in their printing. They don’t laminate paper and source all paper from renewable sources (FSC Standard). Poly bags are made from Oxo plastic which is reusable, recyclable and biodegradable.

Jack Wolfskin began in 1981, when business student and former boy scout, Ulrich Dausien, supplied Frankfurt’s university community with affordable outdoor gear from Taiwan. Since 2009 Jack Wolfskin has been reducing the amount of polyfluorinated chemicals within their products. Since Summer 2020, all apparel as well as backpacks, bags, accessories and tents, have been completely free from PFCs.

Responsible Down Standard

Jack Wolfskin only uses RDS checked down suppliers. The RDS label certifies that the down supply is obtained strictly from animals that have been kept species-appropriate and not suffered from forced feeding.

Green Farming

All products are made from 100% organic cotton. High standards are applied to cultivation of organic cotton: naturally, the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, as well as genetically modified seeds are strictly prohibited.

Responsible Leather

Jack Wolfskin only uses leather that is a byproduct of the food production process and does not originate from protected animals.

Eco Friendly Packaging

It is not possible to completely eliminate all protective packaging. However, Jack Wolfksin has taken a raft of measures, such as using FSC-certified paper for all hangtags and 100% recycled plastic transport packaging, to reduce waste.

Green Headquarters

Since 2008, Jack Wolfskin has been making the change to a greener Headquarters, within this effort they have switched to using 100% green electricity.

Forest Conservation

Mammut uses RE: DOWN (recycled down) in their products, which is reclaimed from old bedding products and sleeping bags that can’t be resold. It offers the same performance as virgin down and the quality of the down is tested at every step of the production.

Organic Cotton

Organic cotton preserves the environment by reducing water, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and by fostering soil fertility and biodiversity. Mammut started using it in 2009 and aims to use 100% organic cotton by 2025.

Recyclability

Although in its infancy now, Fjällräven hopes garment recycling will become more widespread. So, they try to use just one or two materials in each product for easier future recycling.

Low Material Impact

Why use a raw material when a recycled one is available and offers the same quality? Can the cut and fit be adapted to reduce waste? The type and amount of a material is a key consideration in Fjällräven’s designs.

Fully Traceable Down

Their down promise means you can rest assured that when you purchase a down product from them, no birds were harmed – this means no live-plucking; they know exactly where the down comes from and that it’s of the highest quality.

Re-Wool

Re-Wool using surplus wool to make brand new products. Using traditional Italian craftsmanship, the recycled wool is coloursorted, shredded then blended with other colours and mixed with yarn and polyester or polyamide for extra strength.

Chemical Guidelines

The Fjällräven Chemical Guidelines set out the framework for hazardous and banned chemicals that can and can’t be used within their products. They are constantly updating this list with support from The Swedish Chemicals Group.

Recycolour Cotton

Using scraps that are gathered from factory cutting tables, are mixed with virgin cotton to create a stronger finished yarn. The fabric has a distinctive marle-look that needs no dyeing while the recycled cotton uses about 70% less water.

In 2020 we expanded our Heli recycled insulation range. The Heli range uses a synthetic ecodown made from recycled plastic bottles, which are broken down into resin and reinvented as polyester fibres that mimic down by trapping warmth in air pockets.
