Förlänga A multi-purpose highchair that transforms into duo kitchen stools, increasing adult-child connection and enhancing family relationship.

Highchair, designed for toddlers, has limited uses as a child progresses with age. Förlänga ex tends beyond the basic function of a highchair. The duo-purpose, highly specialized furniture can be dissembled into t wo stools for an adult and a child. Förlänga ex tends the life cycle of a highchair through the creation of t wo functionalities and the promotion of family connection.

FÖRLÄNGA

Exploration Highchair is of ten perceived as a dining tool utilized for feeding. Can a highchair be more than just a dining furniture? Ex tending beyond its core function, how can a highchair enhance the relationship bet ween children and parents? Much like our innocent childhood, how can we prolong this piece?

Re_ Breaking through the traditional perception of a highchair, Förlänga Re_evaluates the functional dynamics of children and parents.

Research Functionality, Form, and Family Interaction As research has shown, functionalit y and form are the t wo key emphasis in the design of a highchair. According to my ex tensive analysis, the promotion of Family Interaction in the design element is a key consideration in the development of this family furniture piece.

Inspiration I am touched by the selfless love and care provided by mother birds. As mother birds feed their babies in their nests, our mothers nurture us in their arms, the cribs, and the dining room. This display of af fection is a true heart warming phenomenon that transpires across many animals.

Köng A rela xing furniture collection for the home of fice, advises the user to approach fraustration situation from a peaceful mindset. Deriving from the zen philosophy, Köng refers as the phase of emptiness-the absence of inherent essence in all phenomena. To maintain a conscious mind, one must empt y out his emotions and desires through self evaluation.

Köng is a collection consist of a stool, a chair, and a desk. All three furniture pieces provide user a comfortable and intimate space during the thinking process. Like practicing calligraphy writings or paintings, Kong further illustrates the philosophy of “emptiness” and reminds the audience to rela x in life and go with its flow.

Kรถng Observation In the future, work is local. As the rise of social entrepreneurship and big data, work will become project base rather than corporate base. A corner of home will transition into an of fice space. Balancing bet ween work from life will become a new lesson for the young generation. As working scenario changed, atmosphere also changed.

Re_ Re_interpret the structure of work and adjust our mood with the philosophical approach and the practice of meditation.

Six Stage of Kong Realm:

Social Benefit of Bamboo:

Root - evaluate the causes of problem

Fast grow th rate, bamboo can be harvested in 1 to 5 years.

Scenario - realize the condition occurred

Recyclable and 100% biodegradable.

Realization - apply the situation to a larger scale

Reduce Glow Warming- absorbs CO2 and releases 35% more oxygen

Senses - experience the consequences

into the atmosphere in comparsion to wood.

Acceptance - accept the outcome

Absorb Infrared wavelength.

Think - prevent to repeat the same mistake

Bamboo Fibre- is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-static, de-odorizing, breathable, thermal regulating.

9

Growing bamboo improves soil quality and helps rebuild eroded soil.

Inspiration I am inspired by the traditional craf tmenship of bamboo making. Combining the natural material of bamboo with its fibre to further examine the potential application in future furniture. Utilizing bamboo as material or tool, it is eco-friendly as it is biodegradable. Under the microscopic view, bamboo cell is significant and truly reveals the beaut y of Mother Nature.

Concept Chasen: Tea-whisk used during the tea ceremony, car ved from a single piece of bamboo, as an expression and celebration of the concept of humble simplicit y. As the whisk is refining the matcha powder, it symbolizes the journey to simplicit y. Likewise, as the user is resting on the Kong-stool, it implies the process of one’s mind at the simplest stage.

Annual Tree A stool that depicts the relationship bet ween mankind and nature, further highlighting the importance of appreciating natural resources and maintaining a balance bet ween our world and living organisms.

Think before you act! The grow th span of a tree takes hundreds and thousands of years. A simple act of chopping down a tree takes only a few seconds. Our ever yday needs place a heav y burden on our environment. Annual Tree, a furniture piece that emphasizes the value of being green, reminds us to preser ve and treasure our nature.

Annual Tree Observation Wood as a natural resource is heavly used in the furniture industr y. A piece of wooden furniture is more than a functional object, but as part of the tree spirit.

Re_ Re_mind ourselves to be grateful of our natural resources and preser ve our environment on a daily basis.

Concept Wood and Furniture The creation of a wooden furniture results in an end to a tree’s life cycle. When a wooden stool is not in-use, it can be symbolized as a living tree, alive with growing annual rings. By simply adding a pad, the living tree is now a wooden stool. We must realize and remind ourselves that our limited natural resources cannot be taken for granted. Finding a balance bet ween meeting our needs and conser ving our Mother Nature is our daily dut y.

Aalto A sofa designed for individuals waiting for a long duration in one fixed setting, providing comfort as people await for their nex t destination.

At an airport or a train station, a delayed flight or train of ten frustrates passengers. Sitting on a rigid, traditional bench af ter an ex tensive period may lead to discomfort and muscle soreness. Aalto enables users to position themselves in multiple postures including sitting and laying down. Aalto also provides an exclusive environment for reading and conversing. Flow with Aalto in pushing beyond the boundaries.

Aalto

Exploration Why are the majority of the public benches shaped in a restricting manner? How can we improve the rigid looking public bench into a more comfortable furniture? Public furniture is also a form of art. Will incorporating sculptural art with public furniture create a new experience?

Re_ Re_Evaluate the comfort level of the traditional public furniture and transform it into a unique and rela xed piece.

26

User Waiting and resting in public The furniture pieces in a lobby in which people wait for long hours must provide seats with flexible sitting postures. Sitting or laying down, a lounge furniture should enable the users to alter their postures periodically to ensure adequate blood circulation. Creating a more private and personalized resting space is also critical for users waiting for an ex tended period of time.

Research Bench dividers act as preventative barriers Most benches found in a park are designed with arm rests and stif f back, as arm rests ser ve as dividers preventing the homeless from sleeping on them. Similarly, traditional public furniture at many transportation station are also designed with the same mindset.

Inspiration Inspired by the serenity of the ocean and the personal space created as one conquers the waves, Aalto is designed with a curvature shape to reflect our needs for tranquillity and privacy when rela xing in a lounge seating. The ocean waves symbolize peace and solitude.

Piknikki A portable wine kit that can be cross-utilized as an outdoor dining table for creating memories in nature and a wine and cheese carrier for holding picnics. Wine and cheese tasting, a simple leisure that can take place any where, any time, does not require a formal ritual or an upscale dining outlet. Fine wine and qualit y cheeses can be appreciated in any tranquil and refreshing setting. Piknikki turns an ordinar y wine box into a hand-held, portable dining table that caters to the enjoyment of wine and cheeses.

31

Piknikki

Exploration How can packaging complement a product? Innovative packaging can be turned into a unique and value-add merchandise itself.

Re_ Think outside the box; Re_Define the potential relationship bet ween wine packaging and wine.

Concept Why do we even bring a picnic basket? What is the potential relationship bet ween a bottle of wine and a box? A wine box is more than a method of packaging. In addition to protecting the bottles, a wine holder can also be cross-utilized as a functional and convenient product carrier when enjoying fine wine and qualit y cheeses in the outdoors.

32

Research Complement for Wine Enjoyment As research has shown, majorit y of the recycled wine boxes are used as products other than for wine enjoyment. According to my product analysis, re-packaging wine box as value added product for enjoying wine is a key element in the development of this leisure amenit y.

Toivoa Toivoa is a lamp and pendant that aspires to bring optimism and confidence, turning negative energy into positive momentum.

As a symbol of hope, Toivoa is an interactive, dandelion-shaped pendant. With ever y wave of air, the seed heads of Toivoa will flow and send messages to friends and family. Toivoa aims to relieve human anxiet y and transforms doubts into enthusiasm. Take a deep breathe and breath with Toivoa.

Research The likelihood of suicide increases t wo or three times when times get tough. A strong causation exists bet ween recessions, unemployment, and suicide rate. According to the, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide rates fluctuate with the economic cycles (1928 to 2007). 1930 - Great Depression; unemployment of 25% 2009 - USA Financial Crisis; unemployment of 14% Suicide rate increased from 11.3 deaths in ever y 100,000 deaths in 2007 to 11.6 deaths in 2009.

Exploration Imperfect vs. Perfect Economic problems can impact how people feel about themselves, manage their relationships, and view their futures. Through the use of design, how does one turn negative energy into positive momentum? With unemployment on the rise during global economic downturns, how can I encourage optimism and introduce hope at home?

Re_ Turning hopeless to happiness, I aspire to change IMPERFECT into I’M PERFECT.

37

Concept Excitement vs. Distress When making birthday wishes, we blow candles with joy and excitement. Contrarily, we make the “sigh” paralinguistic respiration when we are down. The same “Blowing” behaviour implies t wo distinct moods and themes. Leveraging the “Blowing” behaviour, I aspire to turn pessimism into confidence.

Development The pulling mechanism enables Toivoa to move and the string movement makes the design appear as a breathing dandelion.

As wind breezes through, the movement from the strings attached to the circular platform will cause the feathers attached to the tip of the strings to vibrate.

Similar to the structure of a windbell, Toivoa also uses strings to create movement.

(Motion Sensor Activation) Toivoa will turn on when the user blows on the pendant. When the wind breezes through, the strings attached to Toivia will move, making Toivoa an interactive lamp.
