A New United Way United Way of the Cape Fear Area
BRINGING LASTING POSITIVE CHANGE TO OUR REGION
IN A UNITED WAY A word from our incoming board chair, Shaun Olsen, current board chair, Lisa Leath, and president and CEO, E. Craig Heim

Sometimes it takes several agencies working together in tandem to take on a local challenge. This was the thinking when our locally operated United Way of the Cape Fear Area (UWCFA) worked with other community institutions to form The Blue Ribbon Commission to address youth violence, or when community leaders came together through UWCFA to develop Home Town Hires (now known as Step Up Wilmington). As we continue to fund vital services like disaster assistance, food, clothing and shelter, we will also work with Coastal Horizons, SEAHEC, and New Hanover Regional Medical Center to support the opiate addiction problem that is rampant here and around the country. We intend to create a new United Way, not only as an institution funding local nonprofits, but as a process in the community that will operate in a more united way. We cannot become the community we need to be if we approach our problems through a fragmented human service system, no matter how compelling or valid. No community can be most effective in addressing the health and human service needs when its United Way is not strong and vital as a centralized funder and community partner. If our common mission is to improve the quality of life in our region, then it is our role to help orchestrate this objective in a way that is more united. The benefits of this way of thinking are self-evident - we can do more, working together with a common vision. As we turn our focus to strengthening our children, families and neighborhoods, our partners will continue to include; The Brigade Boys and Girls Club, Nourish NC, WARM, Pender Alliance for Teen Health, Brunswick Family Assistance, Good Shepherd, Columbus County DREAM Center, and many others. But you will continue to be the critical ingredient. Your support is essential to our ability to grow a future in the Cape Fear Region that is better, even greater than the wonderful region that we have inherited.

Like every United Way, we are owned and operated by our local community and Board of Directors. Although each city and region is faced with many of the same challenges, we believe that local solutions will be better organized and implemented by each local community itself. OUR FOCUS
Children, Families, Neighborhoods
United Way targets its strategies at those critical passages in life that can present opportunities for individuals and families to dramatically increase their chances for long-term success. This approach maximizes our community’s effectiveness, because it allows us to improve lives not just in the short term, and not just superficially, but in a lasting and meaningful way.
1
Preparing Our Children and Youth to Succeed in School and in Life by readying more young people for kindergarten and keeping older children and youth at risk for school failure on track for graduation and finally, from school to work.
2
Strengthening Families and Individuals by mobilizing resources to empower local people who are working to lead self-sufficient, healthy lives supported by a community that cares.
3
Promoting Strong Neighborhoods and Region by building partnerships with individuals and organizations that can develop safer, more connected communities where people are known and appreciated.
“
Children who start kindergarten ready to learn and who stay on track as they grow have the best chances of achieving in school, attaining self-sufficiency as adults and contributing to the economic vitality of our region.
One of the key principles in New Hanover County’s strategic plan is to “develop and nurture partnerships to deliver strategic objectives.” United Way of the Cape Fear Area is a key partner with the county when it comes to meeting the objectives that directly impact our community. It is through this public/private partnership that we can deliver on our desired outcomes and together keep our community safe, healthy and secure. Chris Coudriet, New Hanover County Manager
Reinforcing the Social Fabric of Our Communities We continue to provide a Strong Safety Net of investments and resources to meet basic needs today. With the right assistance, families and individuals can recover more quickly and completely from setbacks and emergencies. Our support strengthens neighborhoods and our region.
THE SOCIAL
FABRIC is the web of connections
OUTSTANDING PARTNERS IN OUR COMMUNITY: Meet Jimmy Pierce of Kids Making It (KMI) Jimmy Pierce started KMI in his backyard shop in 1994 and left the practice of law in 1996 to develop this service into a full time program. KMI now serves more than five-hundred kids annually; from seven years old to early adulthood, in five programs, all designed to help kids connect work to income. Jimmy is one of many local heroes who serve our community through nonprofit leadership. They are United Way hand raisers and we are proud of them and their staff.

that binds individuals, families and neighborhoods to one another. A strong social fabric, the hallmark of a healthy society, includes support for basic and emergency needs, a vibrant nonprofit network and a culture of volunteerism and civic engagement.
The American Red Cross and the United Way have partnered for many years to prepare for, respond to, and recover from all kinds of disasters in our community. From collecting blood for area hospitals, supporting military families or providing comfort, care and assistance to families affected by disaster, the strength of this partnership is in many cases, lifesaving.
