Dear Friends,
As Clerk of the Board of Trustees, it is my distinct honor to introduce our Annual Report on Philanthropy, commemorating a remarkable year for our institution. This year holds special significance as we proudly celebrated our 275th anniversary, marking almost three centuries of Quaker education and a commitment to service and community enrichment. Reflecting on the successes of this milestone year, we acknowledge the duality that things can be good and bad at the same time. This perspective has guided our efforts, reminding us that progress often comes amidst challenges, and that our work, while impactful, exists within a complex landscape.
One of the most profound highlights of our anniversary year was our initiative to combat food insecurity. Through the tireless efforts of our volunteers and partners, including the Outreach Program and the Food Bank of Delaware, we prepared and distributed 27,500 meals to individuals and families in need. While this initiative provided muchneeded nourishment, it also highlighted the ongoing struggles of food insecurity in our community. Our response is a testament to the power of collective action in addressing both immediate needs and long-term issues.
In November, we had the privilege of hosting Bryan Stevenson, a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer and social justice advocate. His compelling speech on “getting proximal” resonated deeply with our audience, inspiring us all to engage more intimately with the challenges and injustices facing our communities. Mr. Stevenson’s visit was a profound reminder that, while significant progress has been made, there is still much work to be done in achieving true social justice.
Our commitment to education and equity was further underscored by the “Equity in Early Education” conference hosted on our campus. This gathering brought together educators, policymakers, and advocates to discuss and promote strategies for creating positive learning experiences for young children. The insights and collaborations formed during this conference will undoubtedly influence our efforts in the years to come. It was a powerful demonstration that while strides are being made, inequities still exist, challenging us to persist in our advocacy.
As a gift to the city of Wilmington, we commissioned new choral and instrumental pieces that celebrate our rich cultural heritage and vibrant community spirit. These compositions were beautifully performed at the Playhouse on Rodney Square, offering a fitting tribute to our city and its residents. The performances were a highlight of our anniversary celebrations, showcasing the talent and creativity that thrive within our community, even as we acknowledge the arts sector’s ongoing struggles for support and recognition.
As we reflect on these achievements, we are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support and generosity of our donors, volunteers, and partners. Your contributions have been instrumental in making this milestone year a success and in sustaining our mission for the future. Thank you for being a part of our journey. Together, we will continue to build on our legacy, championing causes that uplift and empower our community.

Smith McMillan Annual 5K
In October 2023, the WFS community came together again for the much-anticipated Smith McMillan 5K Run/Walk. Just under 200 runners and walkers, including alumni, students, faculty, staff, and families, took to our campus, reinforcing the enduring spirit of this cherished tradition in memory of siblings Jonathan Bacon Smith ’83 and Wendy Smith McMillan ’77.
The 2023 event raised over $8,000 for the Smith McMillan Financial Aid Endowment Fund at Friends, which helps support our mission of providing financial support to deserving students. Thank you to our dedicated committee, sponsors, and participants, who made the race a success!

This year’s Quaker Game Night in March of 2024 was the biggest yet, with over 250 guests in attendance. The evening was filled with fun, camaraderie, and friendly competition. In addition to the much-loved trivia portion, Bingo, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, a yes/no game, and Family Feud were played. This year’s event also featured a DJ and a dance party following the trivia!
Through the support of our community, and generosity of our sponsors, we raised close to $20,000! These funds will support almost every aspect of school life and will help our faculty deliver high-quality educational experiences deeply anchored in Quaker principles.

Be Bold For Our Community
In our Bicenterquasquigenary (275th!) Anniversary year, the Be Bold for Blue Campaign at Wilmington Friends School highlighted the impact the School has had on our community. With the help of challenge gifts from Mati and Chris Buccini ’90, Kristine and David Tuttleman, Janet Yabroff ’64, and the WFS Home & School Association, over 370 donors gave over $180,000 to the Annual Fund
on this year’s Be Bold for Our Community Giving Day. Wilmington Friends School’s commitment to our community and each other matters now more than ever. This year’s donors proved that they are as committed to the tradition of philanthropy as our founders were when we began in 1748.

Aileen Maguire, Special Events and Home & School Coordinator
Aileen Maguire joins WFS from Ursuline Academy, where she planned and executed various fundraising events, including galas, trivia nights, and golf tournaments. Before working in independent schools, Aileen was an attorney and holds a Juris Doctor from Widener University School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Delaware. In addition to her professional experience, she has extensive
volunteer experience with organizations like Unite for Her, the Wilmington Drama League, Brandywine YMCA, and Faithful Friends. We are thrilled to welcome Aileen to the team. Please help us welcome her to WFS!
Scott Nickle, Major Gifts Officer
Scott Nickle brings to Friends a wealth of experience in fundraising and non-profit management, having most recently served as the Director of Development at the Delaware Center for Justice, where he helped develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan that centers the justiceminded community. His impressive background
includes roles as Associate Director of Advancement at the Ministry of Caring; Assistant Director of Individual Giving at Swarthmore College; and Assistant Director of the Wheaton Fund at his alma mater, Wheaton College. Scott holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Wheaton College and a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Penn State University. We are excited to have Scott join our team and look forward to the valuable contributions he will make to our community.
