STUDENTGOVERNMENT

UpperSchoolgovernanceincludesaMeetingforBusiness,whichinvolves allstudentsandstaffModeledontheQuakerMeetingforBusiness,this organizationanditscommittees,bothstandingandadhoc,offer studentsdistinctiveopportunitiesforleadershipandparticipationThe leadersoftheseschoolcommitteesarereferredtoasclerks.

SENIOREXPLORATION

DuringtheSeniorExplorationinMay,studentsareencouragedto integrateandapplyskillsandknowledge,withreflectionontheirgrowth aslearners,throughareal-worldexperience.Suchexperiencesmight includecareerinternships,serviceprojects,oralanguage/cultural immersion.Eachstudentformulatesapersonalquestionasaguidetothe exploration,workswithanadultmentor,andmakesaconcluding presentationtoapaneloffaculty,students,parents,andotherswith relevantexpertise

SERVICE

StudentsatWilmingtonFriendsarerequiredtoperform50hoursof serviceduringa12-monthperiodduringtheirupperschoolyearsThe servicemustbeoutsidetheschoolcommunityandrepresentsteady involvementwithonesponsoragencyFollowingcompletionofan approvedserviceproject,studentsmustreceiveasatisfactoryagency evaluation;completeaself-evaluation;andprepareanessayor presentationdesignedtoextendtheimpact,andopportunity,ofthe serviceexperiencetoothers

MASTERYPROGRAM/INDEPENDENTSTUDY

DuringtheirFriendsSchoolcareers,studentsareofferedtheopportunity topursueaproject(orprojects)enablingthemtoattainanddemonstrate anexceptionallyhighdegreeofmasteryinafieldoftheirchoiceStudents alsohavetheopportunitytodoindependentstudyforcreditbycontract. Inrecentyears,studentshaveinitiatedmasteryprojectsandindependent studyinfieldssuchaslaboratorymethodsinmoleculargenetics, documentaryfilm-making,Euclideangeometry,vocalperformanceand recordingproduction,andAmericanSignLanguage.

QUESTCENTER

TheQUESTprogramsupportsservicelearningtripsonanannualbasis, includingtoElPaso(witnessingimmigrationissues),Acadia (sustainability),SouthAfrica(socialjustice)andtheDominicanRepublic (literacycampaign).QUESTScholarsarethosewhohavecompletedmore than150hoursofservicefocusedonanessentiallearningquestion relatedtosocialjusticeandequityduringtheiryearsinupperschool.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATEPROGRAM

FriendsSchoolofferstheInternationalBaccalaureate(IB)programtoall interestedandacademicallycapablestudentsintheirjuniorandsenior years.Recognizedforitsrigorbycollegesanduniversitiesaroundthe world,theIBprogramalsocomplementstheSchool’sowncommitmentto aglobalandinterdisciplinarycurriculum.AnyFriendsstudentmayelect totakethefullIBdiplomaprogramorindividualIBcoursesInadditionto coursesofferedinthefivemajoracademicareas(English,math, natural/computersciences,history,worldlanguage)aswellasthearts,all IBDiplomacandidatesmusttakeaTheoryofKnowledgecourse,complete theExtendedEssay,andengageinathletic,service,andcreativeprograms (CAS).SinceWFSbeganofferingtheIBprogramin2002,95+percentof WFSjuniorsandseniorselectedtotakeIBcoursesforeitherthediploma orcertificates;40+percenttookthefullDiplomaprogram;and91percent ofthosecandidatesearnedtheirIBdiploma
