Healing Place Close to Home

Before Saint Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute in Overland Park, Kansas, was built, patients would have to travel far away for treatment, sometimes facing long recovery periods hundreds of miles from home. By bringing cutting-edge technology and comprehensive rehabilitative care to the Kansas City metro area, Saint Luke’s Health System has been able to provide high-quality care in its own backyard, helping more than 1,000 patients return to their optimal level of function each year. THE FACILITY The new 100,000-square-foot, 60-bed rehabilitation hospital includes state-of-the-art therapy spaces and flexibility to accommodate advanced robotic technology. With materials for the project selected for their durability and cleanability, surfaces that enabled staff to provide exceptional care and help patients’ feel at ease throughout their recovery were a priority. Biophilic design, which has been proven to reduce stress and help mitigate pain in patients, was also a crucial part of the concept. THE SOLUTION Bringing elements of nature into the design took form with large windows providing an abundance of natural light, warm woodgrains, and organic colors. With broad appeal and lasting style required, the design team knew right away that Wilsonart’s High Pressure Laminate in Walnut Heights (7965K-12) was a great option. Not only could it complement new construction areas, but it could also enhance renovations at existing campuses. “Wilsonart’s wood looks are very realistic, which allows a hospital to have a high-end look without sacrificing durability, wear and tear, and overall aesthetics,” shares Ashlee Deck, AIA, NCARB, lead architect on the project. T H E R E S U LT Walnut Heights was used throughout the facility on the interior millwork and doors. It was also a critical design feature in the main lobby, ground floor, patient rooms, rehab dining facility, and state-of-the-art rehab gym. “Easy to clean and disinfect, Walnut Heights with AEON™ Enhanced Scratch & Scuff-Resistant Performance Technology provides the hospital with longlasting reliability and beauty,” says Ms. Deck. “The customer service provided by Wilsonart is exceptional, as they are quick to provide additional samples and assist with technical data.”
