After missing the first show of the season, the hunt seat team started off strong, finishing the show as Reserve High Point team, just behind Penn State.

Although the team has not been placing as high as they would like, everyone that is showing has been riding well, thanks to the new head coach, Emily Fowler ‘03. This year’s captains, Melissa Landinger ‘04 and Gina Tanquillo ‘04, have been helping to make things run smoothly during this transition time.

Tryouts were held at the beginning of the semester and four new members were added to the

roster. Not all team members get to show, but when they do show everyone has been giving their best effort to ride their best.

The team hs two more shows left this semester. The next one is on Sunday at the University of Pittsburgh.

Third year team member Kaitlin Klotz ‘05 explains, “We definitly have the ability to achieve high point team for the day, which was shown when we achieved reserve high point team at our very first show this semester, we just have to hope that everyone on our team has a good day.”

The hunt seat team will finish off the semester with a show at seton Hill on Nov. 9.

International Briefs Kate Adams and Gabi Masek Staff Writers Bangkok President Bush is currently on a six day trip to Asia for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit being held in Bangkok. The United States hopes to address trade and security issues as their theme. Specific country issues include relations with North Korea, the Japanese yen, and gaining more donations for the Iraq reconstruction. Bush is also expected to praise the Philippine’s for the fight against the recognized terrorist group, Abu Sayyaf. The APEC summit affects the economies of 47 percent of the world trade, 2.5 billion people, and 21 countries.

In response to addressing the goals for the summit APEC leaders said they were committed to advancing free trade “in a coordinated manner among multilateral, regional and bilateral frameworks so that they are complementary and mutually enforcing.” In closing APEC stated “W e agreed to dedicate APEC not only to advancing the prosperity of our economies, but also to the complementary mission of ensuring the security of our people.”

China On October 15, 2003 China became the third nation to send a human into space. The astronaut, Yang Liwei, will make 14 orbits of the earth, returning to North Mongolia upon completion.

Liwei, 38, was chosen based on his performance in the Peoples Liberation Army and his ability to stay calm under pressure. Liwei’s journey should offer a fantastic sight, as visibility will be almost limitless.

Commenting on the launch, former BBC China correspondent, James Miles said, “Just as the launch of men into space by the Soviet Union and the U.S generated huge upsurges of National pride…China is hoping that its first spaceman will help focus the attention of citizens on China’s greatness, rather than on the downsides of the country’s wrenching economic transformation.”

China has demonstrated that it has both the technical and financial ability to compete with the world’s biggest players, which has gotten the attention of many in the Bush administration. (www.bbc.com)

Allies meetings are on Tuesdays at 9:30 upstairs in the Lenfest Commons.

Club president Kati Huber ‘06 wants to stress to the Wilson community that Allies is open to anyone who is interested in supporting gay, lesbian, and bisexual community members, homosexuality is not a prerequisite for membership. The club is currently preparing for Awareness Day, which is December 1. Allies is planning to have some kind of information table, and is looking for volunteers to help.

Animal Welfare Club The Animal Welfare Club invites anyone interested in animal welfare, including vegan and vegetarian issues to participate in the club. Because the club is just getting up and running, no big projects are planned as of yet, but the club is going to try and have the Great American Meat Out this coming spring.

Black Student Union The Black Student Union just had their Afro-Latina Fiesta, which was a lot of fun and a great learning experience for everyone. They are now preparing for Kwanzaa and are planning activities such as African storytelling and having a gospel choir participate in chapel.

Business Club The Business Club is currently working on the first edition of the Wilson College Business Club Journal, which will be a biannual journal. Cora Licht ‘05 describes the objectives of the journal and how the Wilson community can get involved below: “Our objective is to address current issues of national and international importance in the corporate, political, and cultural socioeconomic arena. We are focusing on the analysis of current matters within the business environment and their causes in and effects on society. Therefore, the topics that will be included in the journal are significant to the domestic as well as the international environment. A special feature of

this journal will be “A Country in Spotlight”- a case study of a specific country, which would allow people to gain more information about the political, economic, religious, and cultural systems of other countries around the world. In order to make this journal a success, we would certainly appreciate any help or suggestions from the Wilson College community. We welcome the contribution of both students and faculty to the Journal, either by expressing their thoughts and ideas through articles, or by attending the Business Club Meetings, Wednesdays at 1 p.m. in the Dining Hall.

Children of Wilson Club The Children of Wilson Club is a new club whose objective is “to bridge the gap between faculty, staff, traditional students and the WWC community; familiarize the campus with children of the WWC community; recognize the impact every person of Wilson has on a child and the positive interaction opportunities their interest and involvement presents” according to president Rebecca Ross ‘07.

The club is currently trying to find a meeting time that is more convenient for interested Wilson community members than the current meeting time of Sunday nights. Times being considered are Wednesdays at 12:30 in the dining hall or Wednesday nights at 9:15. The club is currently working on two projects. The first is to organize a collection of “kid stuff” from the Wilson community which will then be available to mothers in the Women with Children program. The collection is set to occur sometime this month, while the mothers will be able to pick up the items some time in November. The club is also trying to organize a caroling event that involves both the children of WWC and traditional and non-traditional students during the holiday season.

The club’s principle objective now is to gain members since it is just beginning.

Staff Editorial “Books won’t stay banned. They won’t burn. Ideas won’t go to jail. In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost. The only sure way against bad ideas is better ideas.

The source of better ideas is freedom. The surest path to wisdom is liberal education” -Alfred GriswoldSeveral years ago, the Billboard staff had faced a grave problem. All copies of an issue had been taken away by an unknown party after they were delivered to Switchboard. Nearly five years later, the current Billboard staff are experiencing similar difficulties. Last semester, some copies of the “Bullboard” were purposely removed from the dining hall during premier weekend. Generally, Billboards can be found all over Lenfest commons, in the library and certain other places. However, not one issue of the last edition can be found anywhere on campus. Is it that the Billboard is becoming more and more popular? The question remains unanswered at this point and has led to this editorial about the importance of students’ freedom of speech.

The Billboard is a vital part of our liberal arts education at Wilson. What makes the Billboard a unique publication on campus is the fact that the material is largely student generated. Thus, it serves as the primary source to express student concerns and opinions.

Lately, students have been compelled by current events to utilize the Billboard to voice their dissatisfaction. This may be the reason that more students are picking up a copy of the newspaper and reading with new enthusiasm. However, it is not outside the realm of possibility that this is also the reason for the suspicious disappearance of the last edition.

The Dickinson College web site states the following about the students’ right to freedom of speech – “College shall not inhibit such intellectual and personal development of students as may be prompted by their exercise of these rights both on and off campus.”

Not situated far from Dickinson, which strongly emphasizes the importance of free speech, Wilson seems to be guilty of censorship. The removal of the Billboards is not the only way that our first amendment rights are being violated. Every poster or press release announcing college activities must first meet the approval of the administration. Certain student performances, such as the Vagina Monologues, were not even allowed to be advertised. Last year when Gretchen Van Ness was invited by Allies to deliver a lecture, the Chambersburg population was not given the opportunity to hear the words of a successful and respected alum concerning important social issues. If we are truly to call ourselves an institution that empowers women, it is essential to our mission that we share our resources with the greater community.

Students of Wilson, we challenge you to keep writing and using your voice. The Billboard is run by students for the students.

Continue to express your First Amendment rights. The tradition of joint governance should assure your vitality in the decision making process at Wilson. We have been given the opportunity as Wilson women to fully appreciate the power of our voices. Do not let this power be taken away from you. And to those who may have knowledge of the current whereabouts of Billboard’s last edition, you have twenty-four hours to turn yourself in. In acknowledgement of these concerns, it is important to address effective ways of communication in order to preserve the integrity and harmony of the overall campus. The following list is of collaborative methods of communication presented by William W.

The Barron Blewett Hunnicutt Classics Gallery is in one of the rooms off of the main staircase. Showcased are many artifacts from the ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, Roman, and Etruscans cultures. This collection is being maintained and added to by Prof. Virginia Anderson-Stoyanovich. Among the many items in the collection is a RomanEgyptian funeral mask and a number of ancient vases.

When Finney began her position as the first full time archivist, in 1998, she found

the job exhilarating. “Most archivists come to a job where the archives have already been established, I have the opportunity to organize the documents and pictures myself., said Finney. She also worked with the architects when the new building was proposed and she says, “I got everything I wanted within my budget.”

An extension was added to the building where all of the documents and memorabilia are contained in acid free boxes in a climate-controlled environment, which, Finney says, is key to keeping everything from disintegrating anymore. Finney states that there is plenty of room for the collection to grow in the new facility.

Dressage Team The dressage team just held a clinic on October 4 that was great, they are looking into have the clinician back next year. There is a show at Cazenovia College in New York coming up on October 25 in which Karolyn Ward, Lisa Havilland ‘04, Nicole Starr ‘04, and Jennifer Wynans ‘04 will be coached by Kasey Chamberlain ‘04. There will also be a show held on November 8 at Centenary College in New Jersey; the riders have not yet been decided upon.

Education Club The Education Club is currently selling raffle ticket for candy cauldrons for $1 a piece, drawing to be held October 29. Tickets can be bought from any Education Club member. The club also encourages Wilson community members to begin collecting gently used or new books for the book drive to be held in November.

Environmental Club The Environmental Club is currently preparing for the Harvest Fest, which will be held in conjunction with the RA’s bonfire on Wednesday, October 29; the time has yet to be announced. The club will also be attending a conference at Slippery Rock University October 25-26 to hear Eliot Coleman discuss organic farming. The club is planning on doing some camping and other fun activities while attending this lecture. The club is also working on making the recycling and composting at Wilson College more effective and hoping to plan some workshops for the coming semester. Meetings are every other Wednesday, next meeting to be held November 5.

Kittochtinny Players The Kittochtinny Players have no date set for their next meeting, but they are usually held at 11:30 on Tuesdays. Right now the club is working on fundraisers for their spring production. Other than these few details, the film is very entertaining and full of goose bumps to share.

Complete interest in the film is kept to the very end; despite my own complaints about plot function, this is an “on the edge of your seat” thriller. There is plenty to keep you occupied whether it be dead teenagers or children who talk to deceased little girls. If you are inclined to go see this film, I definitely suggest you do so, so you can grasp your own opinion about the ending and any unanswered questions. Even though I do not agree that this is the best horror film of the year, it is definitely, at least, worth a one time viewing.

The Ring will be shown on October 31 at 8:00 p.m. in Allen Auditorium.

VMT Club The VMT Club is working on their upcoming Fall Dog Wash. It is taking place on Saturday, November 22 from 9-12 and then from 1-3 at the VMC. Western Riding Club Orchesis Orchesis, Wilson College’s Modern Dance Ensemble, will be holding their fall performance at 8p.m. on November 14 and 15 in Laird Hall.

The Western Riding club is currently preparing for their Halloween Fun Show, which will be running October 25 as a fundraiser. The club has also recently become an IHSA team, which is a goal the team has been striving towards for two years. The clubs first IHSA show will be November 15 and 16.

Sports Standouts August 31 - Sept 7 Alicia Smith was selected for her performance in the field hockey game against Shenandoah University.

She scored the game winning goal on a penalty shot in overtime with 8 seconds remaining on the clock.

September 8 - September 14 Beth Osborne was selected for her performance in the volleyball tournament held at Wilson College.

Osborne tallied 16 kills and 33 digs in 3 games during the tournament. She was also selected to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the event.

September 15 - September 24 Beth Osborne was selected for her 3game performance during the week.

Osborne tallied 9 kills and 28 digs and was credited with a solo block.

September 22 - September 26 Emily Hood was selected for her 3game performance for the field hockey team. Hood led the team to 3 consecutive victories this week.

3-1 vs. Trinity 2-1 vs. Bryn Mawr She scored a total of 4 goals, ranking her 2nd in the AWCC.

September 29 - October 5 Tracy Spangler was selected for her performance in the field hockey game against College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

Spangler held the Gators to 2 goals, while tallying 17 saves – an .88 save percentage.

October 6 - October 12 Lindsey Trace scored on a corner kick in the soccer game against Immaculata University.

Despite the team’s efforts, they were unable to rise above the 2-4 loss.

October 13 - October 19 Hillary Peak was selected for her 4game performance for the volleyball team this week.

Peak tallied a 4-game total of 25 kills and 11 service aces. Additionally, she leads the team in season statistics with 80 kills, 78 service aces and 11 solo block.

Field Hockey team celebrates Halloween tradition Liz Hicks Staff Writer Many students, faculty, and staff were probably just a bit curious when they noticed a goodsize group of Wilson students’ running back and forth around campus. What made this spectacle even more interesting was that everyone in this group was carrying field hockey sticks.

Well, I have news for you, there was a reason that the Field Hockey team was running around campus. Apparently, as is customary, the practice that is held closest to Halloween is the Field Hockey Halloween scavenger hunt and practice.

In order to complete the scavenger hunt the team had to work together.

The team encouraged each other when the journey became hard and almost unbareable to take. Along, they way fun was had by all and the efforts that were put forth climaxed when they finally made it to the field house.

At the field house all the energy that they believed to have drained from their bodies came back in full force and they eagerly went to work carving their pumpkins.

However, everything that the team does is not all fun and games. The team is currently ranked 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
