This November in several states across the US, various elections will be held. Some states are electing new governors, congressional representatives and various local government representatives. Unfortunately, because of the nature of the election, only a fraction of people who vote in national elections will actually vote in their statewide election. Many people do not feel that a state election is as important as a national election. They feel voting for President is more important than voting for representatives or the governor. Many people do not realize that congressional representatives and governors may have more of an impact on a resident’s daily life than the President. State representatives and Senators are the citizens’ voice in Washington D.C. They speak for the best interest of their constituents. If people do not vote, representatives may be elected that are not speaking for the majority of the population. Governors also make policies that directly affect life within their given state, but statistically less people in the state will vote in a gubernatorial election than in a national presidential election. In the 2004 Presidential election, over 21 million 18-25 year olds voted. Despite the fact that there was a large increase of voters in this demographic, the 18-25 voting group still remains the group with the least voting participation. Researchers believe there are a few reasons

for this. Polls show that young voters are less likely to show up at the polls because they do not relate to the candidates, they do not care about the issues that are being presented, they feel like there is not a candidate that represents their interests, they feel like the government is a hopeless cause or they feel like their vote really will not matter. Another reason why some young voters do not vote is because many students go away to school and cannot make it home in order to cast their ballot. For this, there is a fairly simple solution; students who are going away to school can request an absentee ballot from their precinct if they have already registered to vote. One factor keeping people from the polls is that
some students do not register to vote early enough. The deadline for voter registration may vary from state to state. Even if you have missed the deadline for the upcoming election, it is a good idea to register now so you do not forget to register before the next election. Every state has a different registration process, so .you should contact your precinct to find out how to become registered. For more information on voting in your state you can visit your states web page. For information on youth voting in the 18-25 demographic you can visit: http:// www.youthvote.org/voter/ index.cfm. This site contains voter resources and has a voter registration form that is accepted in some states.
