2Opinion To the Powers-That-Be, Please Remember the CCE! by Kimberly Maske-Mertz
I have been a CCE student at Wilson College for three years now. I’m currently a senior, and surprisingly certain things are beginning to come to my attention as I talk to fellow CCE classmates who have either EHHQ KHUH IRU \HDUV RU DUH MRLQLQJ WKH :LOVRQ FRPPXQLW\ IRU WKH ¿UVW time. It seems that there is a certain dissatisfaction with the level of services offered for CCE students, especially in the evening hours. A lack of accessibility to these services seems to be the complaint I hear the most often. Whether it is in reference to the hours of operation at the ERRN VWRUH LQVXI¿FLHQW RI¿FH KRXUV LQ WKH HYHQLQJ IRU FHUWDLQ SURIHVsors, or lack of provisions to sustain commuter students through evening classes‌it seems that although CCE students are a huge presence on campus, few resources are in place to accommodate them. I must admit, although I have encountered certain obstacles on occasion, I have very few complaints when it comes to the services offered at Wilson. However, as a stay-at-home mother I am one of the few CCE students on campus who have the ability to visit the campus during the day. Many of my fellow commuters work full-time during the day and DUH XVXDOO\ XQDEOH WR ¿QG WLPH LQ WKHLU EXV\ VFKHGXOHV WR WUDYHO WR FDPSXV XQWLO DIWHU SP %\ WKDW WLPH PDQ\ RI¿FHV RQ FDPSXV DUH DOUHDG\ closed for the day, leaving the commuter student no other option than to WDNH D KDOI GD\ IURP ZRUN RU VDFUL¿FH WKHLU OXQFK EUHDN LQ RUGHU WR WDNH care of important business related to their education. Another complaint I often hear (and have suffered with myself) LV WKH ODFN RI RSWLRQV RQ FDPSXV IRU FRPPXWHU VWXGHQWV WR ¿QG VQDFNV to carry them through their 6-9pm classes. I am thankful for the soda machines, but caffeine can only carry one so far (and it’s not exactly the healthiest option either). I recall a short-lived, yet wonderful service that was introduced about a year ago‌Whatever happened to the commuter snack cart in WKH EDVHPHQW RI :DU¿HOG WKDW RQFH RIIHUHG VDQGZLFKHV FRRNLHV FKLSV and other snacks to students who were unable to stop for dinner before class? Not only was it more convenient to those with classes in :DU¿HOG than sprinting across campus to Lenfest when arriving at 6pm, but it was also a service that was USED (not only by commuters, but traditional students and faculty as well)! One day it was there, and then it was taken away without any warning. I don’t want to sound unappreciative of the wonderful education I have received at Wilson. To the contrary, I’ve learned a great deal regardless of how loudly my stomach grumbles over my professors’ voices. But it’s disheartening to me to hear the dissatisfaction with Wilson’s lack of considerations when it comes to the needs of its nontraditional student body. To the powers-that-be that are able to make positive changes within the Wilson community, please remember that we are a part of this campus, too. We have the same basic needs as traditional students, but we also face more challenges in our quest for higher education than a traditional student may have. Don’t forget about us, Wilson!

Oregon Cowboy Crosses Tulips Planted for U.S. on Horseback Triumph Over Violence to Show the Real by Brittany Gauss America Nearly 20 people gathered in front of Lenfest Commons at 3pm on November 14th IRU WKH ÂżUVW DQQXDO EXOE SODQWLQJ HYHQW WR celebrate triumph over domestic violence. The Wilson College Counseling Center, Women In Need, and the Speaking For Equality Alliance, which recently formed on campus, sponsored the event. Before the group began planting, Stacey McCole provided information about the event. McCole works for Women In Need, a local service for victims of domestic violence, helping with community education. McCole explained that 1 in 4 relationships in America involve some form of violence. The tulips being planted were purple, a color that symbolizes violence awareness. Angela Lawrence, a Wilson student in the Women With Children program, read a poem by an anonymous author entitled “A New Lifeâ€? which depicted the strength of a woman suffering abuse. Students, faculty, staff, and even some eager children were ready to get their hands dirty in order to spread awareness and show concern for victims of domestic violence. The Physical Plant provided hand shovels and even helped out in planting some bulbs. When all the bulbs were planted, the event ended with some coffee and conversation. The tulips should bloom in April, which is Sexual Violence Awareness Month and will be a reminder of victory over all forms of abuse.

Attention fans of the round orange bugaboo ball! Wilson College Basketball is once again hooping it up at the Gannett Field House, rigorously preparing to face their new NEAC Conference opponents as well as familiar rivals from previous years. This season’s schedule is jam-packed like the previous ones. The Phoenix will play 28 games this season, including two scrimmages. If our team ends up in Top 5 in the NEAC Conference, they may play a few more games during the NEAC Championships that take place at the end of February. Fortunately, this year’s basketball roster looks great! Four seniors are ready to make this season by far the best as D VWHOODU ¿QLVK RI WKHLU FROOHJH basketball careers. The seniors include Dana Bennett, Sarah Engelsman, Logan Gonella, and Mary Miller. In total, 11 student-athletes (including three very talented freshmen) will battle together towards the team goals through the winter season. Allison Steiger starts her 12th season as head coach, and Angie Grove will help her as assistant coach for the second year. Please make sure to come out and support our Wilson basketball team during home games held at the Gannett Field House, located on the north edge of the campus next to Penn Hall. Attendance is free to all Wilson students, faculty and staff with a student ID.

TouchĂŠ! Wilson Fencing Club Celebrates FirstYear by Jessica Klein-Carnes
Did you know that Wilson has a fencing club? Members meet in the Frank E. Gannett Field House once or twice a month with the coach David Coletta and student advisor Dr. Doug Crawford. Practice usually lasts for an hour and a half. The students are impressive with their agile moves and their willingness to take constructive criticism. Clearly, there is an obvious desire to learn the sport. Spectators can also learn a lot about fencing on the sidelines. Coletta grew up in North Jersey where he competed on an international level. He still competes at a Division 1 level and in Veterans
events. Coletta’s children also fence. Coletta describes fencing as “physical chess.â€? He explained that a good fencer thinks quickly, deceives his or her opponent, and hides his or her intentions. When asked why he coaches the Wilson fencing club, he UHVSRQGHG Âł2QH RI P\ ÂżUVW FRDFKHV VDLG LI \RX learn fencing and do it well it’s important to give back to the sport.â€? Crawford started fencing in his thirties and still loves to participate. There are three different types of fencing, but the Wilson club fences with the foil, which means the only area you play is the torso. Crawford explains that fencing helps develop the muscles below the hips. A member of the fencing club, Leah Adam, said, “I decided to join the fencing club because I love the sport and I needed another form of exercise.â€? Right now, about nine women fence with the club. Crawford explained that the club could accommodate up to twenty students. Shippensburg Gallery Captures Local Talent by Sarah Martin
Local photographers were called upon to submit original photographic artwork in preparation for “Captured Developments, a new exhibit being hosted by the SHAPE Gallery in Shippensburg. The exhibit will run from November 30th to December 21st, and a “Meet the Artists reception is to be held on December 7th at 6pm. The gallery exhibit is a great opportunity for students to travel off-campus and get a glimpse of talented artists from around the area, and admission is free. Artists will also sell their work for a moderate price, so make sure to stop by and support the local art community. For more information, visit www.shapeart.org or call 717-377-8842.

I’ll be good. Thanks though. She trudged into the bathroom and closed the door, getting herself ready for the day. About an hour later, the two stepped out of the Jolly Hotel St. Ermin’s and onto the wet London streets. It had not stopped raining since they had landed there a day and a half prior. $IWHU WKH FDQFHOODWLRQ RI KHU ÀLJKW $XGUH\ KDG called home to the travel agent—for some reason she did not quite understand, the ticket she had couldn’t be exchanged. However, she and 4XHQWLQ VWUXFN D GHDO WKDW ZDV ¿QDQFLDOO\ IHDsible with both of them (more Quentin and the travel agent) that allowed them to stay half the time in London and half the time in Paris. Not exactly what Audrey had anticipated when she hopped on the plane back home, but she couldn’t complain too much. The agenda for today was to explore the area around their hotel, which was perfect because everything was right there. They were a block away from Westminster Abbey, about a kilometer from the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace, and one and half kilometers from Harrod’s Department Store, which she really just wanted to look in. Quentin pulled out a map and perused it. *ODQFLQJ XS DQG GRZQ WKH VWUHHWV KH ¿QDOO\ nodded in one direction and started walking. Audrey was shivering, and pulled her coat closer to her as she and Quentin made their way towards Westminster Abbey. The church towered triumphantly in the rain. It wasn’t Notre Dame, but then again Audrey had never seen the Parisian cathedral in person. The two approached the front doors and walked in. The interior was breathtaking. Quentin walked over to a kiosk to pay for
admission while Audrey just stood in awe of the scene before her. Sure, it looked like a church with pews and stained glass and a pulpit, but it was far more intense and spectacular. Quentin nudged her shoulder, and the two started to meander through the cathedral. Everything just seemed more beautiful than anyone had ever described. Pictures didn’t amount to the real thing. There was just a certain peace to it that overwhelmed and awed Audrey. Even The Da Vinci Code, one of Audrey’s favorite books, didn’t convey what Audrey was seeing before her very eyes. Quentin smiled and quietly patted Audrey’s arm to get her attention. “Do you want to go to the Poets’ Corner?â€? Audrey shook out of her own secret world and looked at him. “What?â€? “Poets’ Corner? People are buried here, you know, and there’s a corner dedicated to the Greats. Wanna go see it?â€? Audrey’s eyes lit up and Quentin grinned. He offered her his arm and they sauntered down through the abbey. Quentin was being quiet for once, which Audrey appreciated as the environment was just so much to take in. They made their way into the South Transept and Audrey drew in a breath of amazement. There were statues commemorating authors left and right. Audrey let go of Quentin’s arm and slowly started to peruse the area. Names that she recognized from college English courses jumped out her jogging her memory of the many papers she wrote during all-nighters—Spenser, Dryden, Tennyson‌even Dickens. Audrey smirked, wondering if Dickens ever thought A Christmas Carol was going to be insanely popular when he wrote it. She even found a plaque commemorating authors who weren’t buried there, but were just as important as the others like Jane Austen, Shakespeare, the Bronte sisters, and Marlowe. It was so inspiring to be surrounded by some of the greatest authors of all time. Why was she stuck working in a cubicle when she could be churning out great pieces of literary genius? She sat down on a nearby bench and absorbed the feeling. Time seemed to stop while she was there. After awhile, Audrey felt a tap on her shoulder. She rounded and saw Quentin standing beside her. He sat down and smiled. “Enjoying yourself?â€? Audrey smiled and looked at the tombs. “Oh yeah. I’m sorry‌I don’t mean to be slowing you down. This is just so awesome. Where did you run off to?â€? Quentin shrugged. “I just looked around. I’m a science guy, so I went and found Newton’s tomb. I can take you there if you want when cont. on page 12
