Letter From the Billboard Advisors By Kimberly Maske-Mertz and Robin Herring

Student media proves an integral part of the college experience. Whether students participate in generating the college newspaper or the yearbook, student media acts as the primary source of information for the campus and local area. At Wilson, a small but dedicated number of students produce The Wilson Billboard newsmagazine and The Conococheague yearbook. These publications provide the community with news, information and a documented yearly history of events on campus. Students participate in campus media for many reasons; some enroll in the practicum for course credit, some to gain practical experience in their chosen field in order to enhance their resume, and some simply for the opportunity

to contribute to such an integral part of the campus community. Wilson students oversee operations of the entire publication including concept, writing, editing, photography, layout and design. Staff members—with the guidance of faculty advisers—also oversee marketing, advertising, distribution, business management, fundraising, and social media and online components of the publication that are key to sharing our students’ talents and achievements beyond the local community. The role of a staff member proves challenging but rewarding. Students who participate in student media not only gain real-world experience that they can take with them upon graduation, but do so in a stimulating and supportive environment. Many other opportunities exist

for those interested in a future career in communications including competitive scholarships, internships with award-winning media outlets, membership in professional organizations, and occasional attendance at national media conferences. Best of all, students learn to work together as a team and can enjoy a sense of accomplishment in seeing their hard work and creativity distributed and read by the entire Wilson community. The Wilson Billboard and The Conococheague need creative and motivated students from all majors in order to take both publications to the next level. There exists no better advocate for Wilson College than its students. As advisers to the Billboard and the Conococheague, we would like to take this opportunity to invite all students to participate in student media. In

addition, students, faculty, staff, alumnae/i, and visitors at Wilson may also submit letters to the editor, story ideas, and comments via email at billboard@wilson.edu. We welcome all story ideas and invite members of the campus community to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to voice your opinions on issues that matter to you. Please make sure to “like” our Facebook pages for up-todate information on deadlines, publication dates, polls, news around campus, and links that will enable students, faculty, and staff to upload photos for publication in the yearbook. Here’s to a great start to the 2014-2015 academic year. We wish you much success throughout the semester and look forward to hearing from all of you very soon.

Welcome new Wilson students and welcome back to returning friends! This year promises to be a year of new beginnings. Starting this academic year, Wilson College has become fully co-ed, and for the first time the campus will be home to fe-

EDITORIAL

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS male and male students alike. Construction on the additions and renovations to the library is underway. In greeting an incoming class that is the largest in recent memory, new faces abound—not only among students, but in many offices around campus too. With these changes will come opportunities for the college and her people to grow, and this year, The Wilson Billboard newspaper is growing too! Between Shoshana Rudski as Graphic Design Editor and myself as Editor-in-Chief, the Billboard experience is looking to be richer than ever. In addition to focusing on writing, we are also reaching out to students interested in graphic design, business and adver-

tising as well as communications majors to join our team. Our biggest goal of this academic year is to re-imagine student media on campus. Creative and journalistic writing, photography, video recording, art, music, social media, and more—we are on it. The Billboard, The Conococheague yearbook and The Bottom Shelf Review will be working closer than ever to create a more complete experience than each group was able to provide in past years. Let’s face it. Change can be scary, but it also carries with it hope for the future. Even though things are changing on campus and we may be heading towards new challenges, it is an exciting time

to be at Wilson, and our school will be stronger for it. Here at the Billboard there is one thing that remains the same, though, regardless of what the coming semester holds. We are going to provide the campus with the latest and most pressing news available while have a great time doing it. This year is setting up to be a lot of fun, if not interesting, and we cannot wait to get started.

Changes in Parking Due to Library Construction Ongoing construction will affect parking and traffic patterns on campus. Parking between the Science Center and the library/Warfield (lots D & E) will no longer be available except for reserved spaces. Lot (A) and lot (C) will now be a faculty/staff lot. Overflow parking is at the Hankey Center lot accessible via Penn Drive. Additionally, the intersection of Lenfest and Gallway will be blocked twice for 3-4 week periods while water and sewage lines are installed. During these times, cross-campus auto traffic will be via Philadelphia Ave/Route 11. To route the one-way traffic will go through lot (B) for cars to exit via the Sharpe House drive. Print brochures and maps will be available within the first week of class.
