Construction Continues on Campus

Construction continues as of Fall 2016. It consists of widened roads, the addition of sidewalks and lighting, and the removal of parking spaces with plans to replace them.

According to the Wilson College Office of Marketing and Communications, there are plans to add parking spaces with the expansion of the Hankey Center, Rosenkrans, and Lenfest Drive parking lots.

The total number of added parking spots will be 119 spaces, which is 47 more spots than were originally on campus.

It should be noted that faculty, staff, and students are discouraged from parking in the neighborhood across the street as these spaces belong to neighborhood residents.

The completion of construction is set to be sometime in October, weather permitting.

Student media at Wilson plays a vital role within the campus community. Not only do these publications act as a valuable news source and time capsule of recorded Wilson history, but they also serve as a forum for democratic discussion and creativity.

Working for an official campus publication also proves highly beneficial to students as it provides valuable training and experience that companies take into consideration when vetting future employees. Students gain the added advantage of networking with professionals at conferences, joining nationally-recognized professional organizations, and developing a portfolio of published work prior to graduation.

This school year, I assume the role as sole Editor-inChief, which is a rewarding feeling. Since my freshman year, I have worked with the Billboard, beginning as a staff member and working my way up. Last year, I was CoEditor-in-Chief, which was humbling enough in and of itself, but leading on my own now means a lot to me. To know that I am trusted enough to have the Editor-in-Chief position and that my hard work has paid off is a great feeling.

“The biggest thing I took away from my position as Editor-in-Chief of The Bottom Shelf Review was kindness in providing constructive criticism,” says Meg Oldman ’08. “So often writers treat critique of their writing as criticism of them as a person. Learning to request revisions in a way that highlighted successes and asked for corrections gently has given

me great tools for my career as a college English instructor.”

Lauren Kershner ’13, a reporter at the Hanover Evening Sun, credits her role as a staff reporter with The Wilson Billboard for helping her successfully navigate a career in journalism.

“The Billboard and student media did more for me than I ever thought it could,” says Kershner. “It was as close to real life experience that I could ever get in college. It prepared me to do a wide variety of stories in different disciplines that allows me to do different things in my career as a journalist.”

EDITORIAL MISSION STATEMENT

Billboard hype this year, and have more people interested in joining the staff. Whether you enjoy writing, photography, or graphic design, there is something for everyone related to the Billboard. We offer an open environment, so if even you are only slightly interested, check it out.

This year will be my final year at Wilson, and I’m hoping to make the best of it. Being Editor-in-Chief of the Billboard will be a part of that. I’m excited to see what this year has in store, and I hope this will be the best year of Billboard yet.

Student media at Wilson offers a number of exciting staff opportunities in reporting, graphic design, photography, art, and business management for both undergraduate and graduate students of all major areas of study. This October, staff members from all three publications will travel to Washington, D.C. to attend the Associated Collegiate Press National College Media Convention.

Summer Abroad: Adventures in Thailand

When Jordan Massey ’16 and Lindsay McCauslin ’16 crossed the stage at Commencement last May, they had one more requirement to fulfill to receive their degrees: an internship.

Massey and McCauslin shared an exciting study abroad experience in South Africa during the summer of 2015, which prompted them to pursue an internship abroad.

After researching several potential internships in the sciences, they discovered a company called World Endeavors that organizes internships, volunteering, and study abroad opportunities.

They completed an application and were accepted into a veterinary internship program in Thailand. The staff at World Endeavors was responsible for

the internship placement and living arrangements for the students while in the country.

Massey and McCauslin were placed at the Chiang Mai Night Safari’s animal hospital. They put their veterinary tech knowledge to the test while working with tigers, lions, hyenas, porcupines, elephants, camels, alpacas, and many other animals.

They performed various tasks on the animals including health checks, deworming, laboratory work ups, wound dressing, relocations, and darting.

On their days off, they traveled around Chiang Mai exploring the temples of Doi Inthanon and Doi Suthep, visited the Chiang Mai Zoo, and enjoyed traditional Lanna dance performances.

The opportunity allowed Massey and McCauslin to experience veterinary medicine in a new culture and how it is performed in a wildlife setting and on zoo animals. The language barrier encouraged them to be more open minded and they practiced skills taught at Wilson College as well as learning new ones.
