Welcome Welcome to the Autumn/Winter Season at Salisbury Playhouse and Salisbury Arts Centre.

At Salisbury Playhouse we are excited to be transforming the Main House for two special productions this Autumn. Alan Ayckbourn’s brilliant comedy Relatively Speaking and Hugh Whitemore’s compelling drama Breaking the Code will be produced with seating on all sides of the stage, bringing audiences closer than ever to the action and creating a special atmosphere in the theatre.

Alongside these two Wiltshire Creative productions, we are thrilled to be producing the world premiere of Barney Norris’ new play – a retelling of Lorca’s Blood Wedding, set in a Wiltshire Village.

At Salisbury Arts Centre, there is a lively mix of dance, comedy, music and film, as well as live screenings from NT Live and New York’s Met Opera and a fascinating programme of visual arts.

And, of course, there is plenty of entertainment over the Christmas period – from the family pantomime Robin Hood, a new musical adaptation of The Tailor of Gloucester and Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales at the Playhouse, to a festive murder mystery, stand-up comedy and Christmas music at the Arts Centre.

Finally, why not get creative yourself? Take a look at the wide range of workshops our Take Part team runs – from pottery and sculpture to dance, circus skills and even stand-up comedy – and give something a try.

BREAKING THE CODE Hugh Whitemore

By based on Alan Turing: The Enigma by Andrew Hodges At the height of the Second World War eccentric genius Alan Turing was breaking the complex German code, Enigma, at Bletchley Park. Since his work was classified top secret for years after the war, no one knew how much was owed to him when he was later put on trial and publicly humiliated by the revelation of his sexuality.

Hugh Whitemore’s compelling play intertwines an account of Turing’s most heroic hour with that of his betrayal by the nation he had helped in its darkest hour. Turing’s story went on to be told in the 2014 Oscar-winning film The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

A Wiltshire Village, today. Rob and his fiancée Georgie are checking out the village hall for their wedding reception, but Rob’s Mum wonders if they’re rushing into things. Just as they begin to talk her round, a figure from Georgie’s past appears and threatens to shatter their plans. Very soon Georgie is questioning who really is the love of her life.

ARTHUR’S DREAM BOAT Based on the book by Polly Dunbar, this is the story about a little boy who has a dream.

One night, Arthur has an amazing dream about a beautiful pink and green boat with a stripy mast. He can’t wait to tell everyone about it but no one (not even his dog!) is interested. In fact, they don’t even notice that this very same boat is growing on his head, getting larger and larger by the minute! Soon, Arthur is bouncing along the waves in his very own dream boat. Maybe now his family will listen to him!

Based on surviving court transcripts, the seven-month trial that gripped Renaissance Rome is brought to the stage, asking how much has changed in the last four centuries.

Blending myth, history and contemporary commentary, this is the story of how a woman took revenge through her art to become one of the most successful painters of her generation.

THE LADDER The uplifting story about a downfall When theatre-maker Shôn Dale-Jones becomes too pessimistic to write a new show, he approaches his long-time collaborator, the Welsh emerging artist, Hugh Hughes, to step in.

Determined to restore Shôn’s faith in humanity, Hugh creates The Ladder. Using the story of his father’s life and death, Hugh Hughes challenges us to wake up to the pitfalls that surround our everyday lives.

The Ladder is a wake-up call to the sleepwalkers heading off the edge of the cliff. The show exposes us to some of the decisions we make in our lives – decisions we make, knowing full well, that we’re making the wrong choices.

The Last Full Measure of Devotion: Kate Wilson

Reflecting on the conflict in Afghanistan, this commemorative installation consists of a loving cup for each British service life lost in that country, accompanied by a set of stitched kneelers bearing poetry written by a WW2 veteran. Kate Wilson is a studio ceramist, whose work examines emotional engagement with the banal and sometimes ridiculous.

Imprint – Mind, Body and Soul Impressions from life, drawings by me

Coinciding with the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize Exhibition at The Salisbury Museum, Imprint is a drawing festival for families. Using the museum building and its collections tas inspiration, members of the public were invited to draw,s cribble and scrawl. Come and see a selection of outcomes from a whole week of drawing experiments – from string symphonies to human drawing machines.

Nicola Bealing is a Cornwall-based British artist who works in both painting and printmaking, who leans toward the narrative and visually communicates modern day fables through the exploration of the absurdity of human behavioural patterns.

Themes of dark and light, blood and contortion, wind, sky and water, eyes and teeth, long roads, high mountains, birds in forests together with powerful representations of flora recur in her work.

This solo exhibition is a response to the retelling of Lorca’s Blood Wedding, being produced at Salisbury Playhouse.
