Getting involved is critical; our aim is to facilitate the building of self-efficacy, self-confidence and self-esteem, whilst giving time to step away from the potential anxieties that day to day life brings. Co-curricular time is the window for students to enjoy those ‘magic moments’ when you are immersed in activities that you love, or activities you know are doing you good but maybe you don’t love at the time! There appears to be a strong correlation between the highest academic achievers and their participation in a multitude of activities. Therefore, seize the moments you can, to play hard as well as work hard. This year we will see the return of Clubsfest! For those who haven’t experienced this yet, it’s an informal fair where all clubs and societies have a stall to show off what to expect if you sign up to be part of their club. You will have the time to wander around each stall and ask questions before going away to sign up for the clubs of your choice on the online system called SOCS ~ www.socscms.com/socs/login.asp
…@WimbledonHigh
With opportunities before school, two 40 minute sessions at lunchtime, after school activities and weekend sports, as a guideline we would expect Years 7-9 to be involved in a minimum of 5-7 sessions per week and Years 10-13 involved in a minimum of 3-6 sessions per week. This will depend on the activities you choose, as some place more demands on your time than others; the programme is designed to enable broad participation in Years 7-9 (with the chance to make new friends
in particular), with the expectation that your choices will be more specific, but not exclusive, as you move into Year 10 and upwards. The key is to strike a balance and your form tutor is there to help you with this. Once you have made your choices, SOCS will show you your individual timetable that incorporates both your lesson schedule as well as your Co-curricular schedule.
Next Steps 1.
Please read the rest of this booklet for Music, Drama, Sport and Academic overviews and the A-Z of activities available. Online you’ll also find the day, time and location for each club.
https://whs.fireflycloud.net/ co-curricular
2. Decide what you would like to do, then go to the SOCS sign up page to choose your clubs. Instructions can be found on the link below; your tutor will also help you.
https://whs.fireflycloud.net/ co-curricular/on-line-cocurricular-sign-up
Once you have signed up, the lead member of staff will be in contact and you will also be added to that club’s TEAM, then you’re good to go!
I do hope you enjoy this year’s programme. Best wishes Ms Jenny Cox Director of Co-curricular & Partnerships

Drama
Here’s to an exciting year full of singing, dancing and acting, and there will be lots of opportunities for those interested in learning how to stage-manage or make props and organise costumes. Also for those who want to run lighting, sound and digital tech for performance.

At Wimbledon High School we look to include all those who want to be involved in our Drama productions, however we do audition to help with specific casting decisions; we manage this in an open, flexible and friendly fashion, aware of the need to develop student confidence but also resilience.

This year it will be wonderful to welcome family and friends back to the Rutherford Performing Arts Centre to watch performances live, and we intend to film and stream all performances where we are allowed as we have learned just how wonderful it is to be able to share your work more broadly within our school community.
Co-Curricular Life 2021 ~ 2022
As you get used to a new routine, Year 7 will have designated time in your Music and Drama lessons during the Autumn term to work initially in class groups then collaboratively to produce the Year 7 Christmas Show. In the Spring term we plan to run a Year 7 Drama club where you can enjoy some drama activities and work on monologues, duologues or small scenes in preparation for an informal twilight revuestyle performance. We look forward to seeing many Year 7 performers either as soloists, or in groups, in our Musical Theatre Celebration currently planned for early in the Summer term.

Our Year 8 Abridged Shakespeare Project will be running in the Autumn term on Monday after school and on Thursday lunchtimes, working towards a performance evening in the Rutherford. In the Spring term you can choose to continue with Drama club to work on monologues for the House Drama Competition, and contributions to the Musical Theatre Celebration. In the Summer term you can take part in the Year 8 & 9 Summer Musical. It is important to note that this requires a greater time commitment but is a fun and exciting way to end the year. In the Autumn term, we are looking forward to working with you on the Year 9 Play which will a creative and physically engaging ensemble piece to be performed in early January. You will need to be able to commit to the core rehearsals on Monday and Tuesday after school. In the Summer term we encourage everyone to come and take part in the Year 8 & 9 Summer Musical; a fun and exciting way to end the year. We also look forward to seeing Year 9 performers either as soloists, or in groups, in our Musical Theatre Celebration currently planned for early in the Summer term. This year, Year 10 are invited to take part in the Senior Musical, working with Year 11 and Year 12 students to produce a suitably challenging piece of Musical Theatre to be performed early in February 2022. We get going as soon as term starts, so sign up quickly on SOCS if you want to be involved, whether in a leading role or in the chorus. Please don’t be worried about being in competition with older students; working on a challenging piece in a friendly and supportive cross year environment will be fantastic. Rehearsals for the Year 10 Play, to be performed at the end of May, start after the musical, which means for the first year ever, Year 10 can take part in a play and a musical in the same year should you wish to.
Year 11 and Year 12 students have to choose to take part in the Senior Play or Senior Musical; both projects are auditioned early in the Autumn term and you can ask to be considered for either or both projects. The Senior Musical will be performed in early February and the Senior Play at the beginning of March. Year 13 Students planning to continue with Drama/ Musical Theatre beyond sixth form may also take part in these projects with permission. Although Year 13 students will necessarily be focusing on their studies, some enthusiastic students are planning to get together during the Autumn term, to prepare and present a short play or scenes and sketches for an informal performance at the start of December. Watch out for notices if you fancy getting involved. In partnership with the English Department, we also run New Views playwriting club for Year 11,12 and 13 on Friday lunchtimes (see photo on page 2).
All year groups are invited to take part in the Musical Theatre Celebration, a concert which will include solos, duets and choreographed group pieces. Students from all year groups will also be encouraged to submit monologue selftapes for the House Drama Competition.
Private LAMDA lessons are available for students from all years with slots at lunchtimes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. WHS students have continued to achieve outstanding results in LAMDA exams. We are also offering Theatre Tech Club for all year groups, where you learn about sound, lighting, stage management, costume and prop management and the Theatre Tech Crew will be invited to take on roles of responsibility for all performances and events, supervised by our fantastic theatre technicians.

Music
Wimbledon High School has a long history of music making and we’re delighted to celebrate the importance of the performing arts in building resilience, collaboration and living an enriched life, where we all appreciate the joy of playing and singing together.

Music is a vibrant department at WHS and our colleagues and peripatetic teachers (acclaimed musicians in their own right) are looking forward to the return of live performances after a year of having our wings clipped. We are delighted that many of our clubs and ensembles will resemble pre-Covid times. Larger clubs, such as Canto, A Cappella and WHS Symphony Orchestra will make a spectacular comeback with weekly, in person, mixed year group rehearsals in preparation for our set piece events such as Festival of Nine Lessons and our Spring Concert at Cadogan Hall. Peripatetic lessons will continue to take place in person for students in Years 7 to 13, using the Senior Music rooms.
Canto will be meeting on a Friday morning at 8am. This is an auditioned choir, open to any student in year 7, 8 or 9. Canto will comprise approximately 50 students singing in an SSA format and will be preparing for events such as Festival of Nine Lessons and Cadogan Hall. Please do look out for information in the first week about auditions! A Cappella will be meeting as normal! To hear music radiating from the Senior Hall from 8am on a Tuesday and Thursday is an absolute joy, and a wonderful way to start the day for those involved! A Cappella is open to students from Years 10 to 13 and we will be preparing for the return of our set piece events such as the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols (yes, we’re already thinking about Christmas...!). If you want to join us in A Cappella, sign up on SOCS – we’d love to have you onboard.

Sport
Updates on the Co-curricular Firefly page or SOCS
Sport remains an integral part of life at Wimbledon High where girls have the opportunity to learn a wide range of activities which contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
Sport Timeline • Hockey is the major sport of the Autumn Term and every year group has weekly training and matches, including Saturday mornings. We enter many local, regional and national competitions. • The Netball A teams also train in this season as well, as we enter a number of County and National tournaments. • Rowing, Swimming, Cross Country and Gymnastics run concurrently with the Games programme, throughout the year. • In the Spring Term the focus switches to Netball. Last year we ran 28 teams!
11
Our co-curricular programme offers a huge range of sports and activities, both competitive and recreational, from Hockey to Yoga, Strength and Conditioning to Badminton, as well as the major and minor sport of the term. (See SOCS.) In return, we expect the highest level of commitment from the girls and the determination to succeed and to push themselves hard both in training and competition. Whilst we have a team for every student who wants to represent the school, to be selected for the A team is challenging and competitive. There is fluidity between the teams throughout the year and selection is based on commitment, attitude, application, ability and talent. Check the Sports Fixtures website to get a fuller picture of the range of teams and sports which compete regularly for the school.
We have a large team of experienced, enthusiastic and inspirational PE teachers and professional coaches. In some cases, where students do other sports in their own time, they can represent the school in these sports, with parental support. eg: Equestrian, Sailing, Skiing. For fixtures and team information, see: www.wimbledonhighsports.com. You can download the app to your phone for easy access to up-to-date information.

By providing inspiring teaching and high-level coaching we ensure that each individual is supported to reach her potential and participates with enjoyment! Students strive for success by being pushed out of their comfort zone in an environment that builds resilience, nurtures curiosity, promotes teamwork and fosters leadership.
• Cricket, Tennis and Athletics are the major sports of the Summer Term. Cricket in particular is a growing sport here at WHS and we have invested heavily to improve our equipment and coaching of the sport. There are training sessions in all of these sports for girls who wish to represent the school. • Running throughout the academic year is our Tennis Academy (email tennis@wim.gdst.net), where girls can opt to receive paid for lessons at lunchtime or Saturday mornings.

Academic Enrichment Across the year, we put on a host of lectures, speaker events and workshops aimed at ensuring the academic horizons of our students are broadened, stimulating thought-provoking discussion and debate.
Explore talks and Rosewell lectures are aimed at girls in Years 9 to 13, but may be attended by students in any year. Keep an eye on the school website; events will be posted on social media and posters displayed around the school and in High Ways. Parents, older siblings, plus students from our partner schools are most welcome at Rosewell lectures. Speakers are experts in their field. After a 40-50 minute lecture (usually starting at 6:00 pm), there is the opportunity to ask questions. We ask you to book in advance so that we may gauge numbers and organise catering of refreshments.

Rosewell Slams They’re back!
Last year, we launched the very successful Bright ‘n’ Wimsy partnership between Wimbledon High School and fellow GDST school, Brighton Girls.
After a pandemic induced hiatus last year, we’re pleased to reignite our Rosewell Slam series. These offer students and staff a forum to discuss a wide range of topics from a multi-disciplinary perspective.
This year, we are excited to be running the partnership with a focus on sustainability with the view to students implementing a project of their choice that has an impact in the community. Scholars in Years 10 and 11 will enjoy a range of exciting opportunities as they develop their ideas, including trips to Brighton and speakers exploring topics such as sustainable architecture, environmental art the vulnerability of our natural world.
Each Slam involves three participants giving a brief talk on the subject of the day and answering questions from the audience. Students and staff are encouraged to get involved and Rosewell Slams will take place during Lunch 2. Refreshments and lively debate will be provided. Stay tuned for dates and look out for social media posts 10 days or so before the Slam for more info!
New for 2021-2022 Festival of Ideas
This year, we will be offering workshops especially designed for students interested in academic writing for peer-review publication.
This year Wimbledon High School is launching its inaugural ‘Festival of Ideas’ in the Spring Term – a celebration of academic curiosity which includes a whole host of events. Students and staff, along with those from our Partnership schools will be invited a festival of workshops and speakers, culminating in a forum where attendees will discuss 21st century challenges.
If you are interested in turning your Extended Project Qualification into published work, keen to submit a research paper to a peer-reviewed journal or intent on entering an essay competition, this workshop aims to explore some challenges that will confront all academic writers regardless of their discipline.
After a year of lockdown and an unprecedented global crisis, it is time to reflect: What are the ideas that we will need to adapt to our new reality? How will they build on the legacy of the past? The talks, dialogues and ideas explored during this festival seek to raise questions about 21st century challenges, while at the same time highlighting the sheer scope of academic curiosity at Wimbledon High School.

At times these may include two or more departments teaming up cross-curricular to provide more than one perspective on a particular area. For example, racquet research investigates tennis players (and how they use their racquets) from both a scientific and a sports perspective.
Community These clubs offer opportunities to collaborate with local community partners, broadening your outlook.
