We are delighted to be launching our brand new WHS Young Musician of the Year in 2019! This is a new competition where pupils perform in different disciplines (Voice, Strings, Wind/Brass and Piano/Percussion) in three different categories by standard (Intermediate, Senior, Advanced). The winners of each category for each discipline will then perform in an exciting Final in March 2020.

Continuing our exciting WHS Young Musician (WHSYM) series, our attentions turn to strings for this competition. We are delighted to welcome Batholomew LaFollette – international cellist and member of the Jigsaw Players – to adjudicate the competition. Bart will also lead a workshop for all pupils taking part in the competition in the afternoon, allowing pupils to try out new techniques, ask questions and to gain an understanding of what life as a professional musician offers. Refreshments will be served from 18:45.

The WHSYM starts off with our Vocal Competition. Pupils from Year 7 to 13 will be able to present a vocal piece in any style to try and secure their place in the final. The competition will be adjudicated by a member of the Jigsaw Players, continuing our partnership through the academic year and allowing their excellent musicianship to help inform future development.

Before the competition, pupils will have an hour workshop with the adjudicator as a whole group to discuss various different performance techniques and musical character, helping them to improve their musicianship. Refreshments will be served from 18:45.

WHS YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR: Wind & Brass Competition Thursday 14th November 2019

19:00 - 21:30 / Senior Hall

Free tickets from https://www.trybooking.co.uk/LZT The WHSYM competition continues with an exciting competition for pupils who play woodwind and brass instruments. Both wind and brass instruments have dramatically increased in popularity at WHS over the last five years, with the Rare Instrument Scheme in Years 5 and 7 encouraging a surge in the number of pupils learning the Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet and (from 2019) Trombone. The competition will

be adjudicated by a member of the Jigsaw Players, continuing our excellent partnership with this dynamic ensemble. Pupils involved with the competition will also be part of an active workshop with the adjudicator before the competition, allowing them to learn more about the life of a professional musician and to ask questions. Refreshments will be served from 18:45.

The congregational carols will be accompanied by the WHS Symphony Orchestra. We are delighted to once again welcome Mr John Challenger, Assistant Organist of Salisbury Cathedral, to accompany the service.
